View Full Version : Which country(ies) could Chelsea beat?

I'm bored out of my tiny little mind over here. The Euro is on and I am getting snatches of it at best in the kitchen here at work. So I was musing that, considering our murderers row of international talent (including a half dozen captains and many more world class internationals), which country(ies) would we be capable of beating.
A proviso here is that we have first choice of player (i.e. Terry plays for us, not England) and we would have a competent manager at the helm (there's other threads for this so just assumed we have someone who knows what they were doing - no need for names).
Could we beat the Netherlands? Ghana? the US of A?? How would the result differ if they had first choice?
As the summer stretches on, I'll try and think of other threads/debates in order to stimulate talk about some different angles than the usual manager/player speculation that normally takes up threads over the summer.
I may even start a "Just how fat is Eddie these days anyway?" thread. Poll choices will run in 10 pound brackets from 170-180 on up to 230-240 :D

QPR could beat the US of A :p
One must remember that USA have NEVER won a world cup game in Europe and are really a fourth tier country in footballing terms...1st tier being countries like Brazil and Italy and second tier including countries like Spain and Russia and the 3rd tier being comprised of countries like Iran and Ghana . . .USA is clearly in the fourth tier. . .the proof is in the pudding as they say. IF the USA actually win a world cup game in Europe they move up to the dizzying heights of a Ghana or Iran and so forth.
Chelsea would easily compete in the 1st tier. Club football is of a higher quality imho.
That should get your thread bouncing :D

Actually I've wondered this a few times before, actually one of them being earlier today, instead I said that the player plays for the national team. I was thinking if we could beat Germany, and since Ballack is the captain he'd be on Germany.
I think we'd be pretty high up there considering we have some of the best from each national team.

It would be an interesting subsection of the debate as to the marginal countries and key players. By that I mean if we had player x we would win, if the country had him they would win.
Following on from Monkee's post (:D) there is an inherent advantage for clubs in that they spend a lot more time together.

Chelsea could beat many countries, actually, probably all of them, except Ukraine. That of course would mean Sheva plays for Chelsea.:D

Chelsea could beat any country except England even if the country gets first choice.

Did you really put Russia in the second tier??? What have they done that has been so wonderful. I think the US has a fuller trophy case and a thrid place finish n the World Cup. Certainly not fourth tier.

I think the US has a fuller trophy case
I repeat : Never [ever] won one single World Cup match in Europe.
Russia has a footballing tradition that far surpasses that of the US of A and they have consistently produced world class players and competed in world football. The USA is yet to produce a single World Class player. . .they will, they just haven't done it yet.

Which countries could the LA Cosmos Galaxy beat? That is the real question...with David Beckingham they could beat Brazil and win Euro 2008.

World class? By world class do you mean capable of winning domestic international titles, and making their presence felt in the world cup?
Don't underestimate the US. I don't give a rats ass about how many US players might be playing in Europe, because we still compete with the best of International teams. Spain barely beats us and we tie a very open Argentina game.
If you disagree, then please tell me, what in the world is your definition of "world class"? Because under my own definition, England isn't, because they couldn't even qualify for Euro 2008.

I'm a fan of the U.S. too, but bear in mind that we just played England and looked like a pub team out there. It's hardly a surprise that English posters think we're shit, because shit we are.

Englishmen have zero room to talk about International play. Zero room at all.

I'm sorry but by that logic that means Frenchman, Italians, or the Dutch can't talk about internationals either just because they didn't qualify at one one point for a major tournament. France didn't qualify for the World Cup in 1990 or 1994 FFS. Italy didn't qualify in 1958 and the Dutch didn't qualify numerous times.

If Chelsea were to play any national team Chelsea would most likely win. Our squad consists of players from different countries, whereas a national team is limited in its selection. Any top club team, such as Chelsea, has players who compliment each other, practice and work well together.
So a top club team should defeat a national team for the above reasons. Bur bear in mind it's football and one never knows!

Given the way people have been acting about England not qualifying, they're acting as if it's the first time England hasn't qualified for a major tournament before. It's not. Point is, at some point in time a major country couldn't get the job done. There are exceptions of course.

Thanks Monkee. I really wanted to see more delusional posts like this one where a US Sawker fan tells us how great they are because they tied Argentina in a friendly. Please if you want to be this crazy then head over to the appropriate spazzo forum.

Of course you are correct. I mean we play in the weak UEFA bracket which holds nothing compared to the mighty CONCACAF. I can see your point I mean in 18 World Cups;
England has won one, been in 2 semis, and 6 quarter finals. Keep in mind that we didnt even enter the first 3 so just make 15 WCs for England. In an impressive showing the US has played in all 18 WCs and has had 1 semi final appearance in 1930 and second round and one quarter final to show for it...
but you are right we have no room to talk about International Football. I mean you guys invented the game correct?
Yeah, but I'm talking about the present.

Ah, the present. Like the 2-0 humiliation your beloved Nation showed against a beluguered England side....
I can see where you are going with this, really I can.

Uh oh, here comes the mighty fern, guess I should be afraid.
Lol, english fans really are delusional. I guess 2-0 is now a humiliating scoreline, oh please.
I could care less about a fluke world cup win 50 years ago.
Have fun beating "lower tier" teams, and getting your highs off of it.
English arrogance is hilarious. If you guys don't win a game at Wembley, it's the end of the world, and it's time to bash some heads in. But if you win, oh boy, yay England, we beat a team deemed inferior in front of our home crowd, and "humiliated" them 2-0. Get over yourself.

are you suddenly going to add another team to your growing list of teams your support.
lower tier teams? Have you any idea who the US play in CONCACAF qualifiers? Even the most ardent US fan would have a hard time defending the scenerio that the US would not have qualified for the last 3 World Cups if they had to do so in the UEFA region.
Have fun being delusional, seriously, I have dealt with many spazzos like you before and you wont be the last. "Mighty fern"... yeah I like that.
please watch the game, it was one of the most uneven 2-0 wins you will ever see.
