Continuing on... :)
As I said before, if someone can provide an example of another goal in world football where a defender, lying motionless on the ground 2.5 metres over the dead ball line, is deemed to be playing someone onside I'd like to see it.
Genuine request because I've been playing and watching the game for over 40 years and I've never seen that.

van Bronckhorst should be man of the match

Who cares if its happened before. Who cares if its "fair". By the letter of the law, it was a legit goal.

What part of the Laws of the Game do you not understand?
Yea, it was the first time I have ever seen it too, but that doesn't change the Laws.

Either way the Dutch played far superior football than the Italians did today. Even when they were up 3 goals they were still attacking. The Italian defense was a disaster.

Forza Azzurri
Sorry -- had to be said. Great match by the dutch, and fully agree on Gio as MOTM.
Here's to France continuing to stink up the joint. Italy may have lost 3-0, but I still say they looked better than les bleus.

Doesn't have to have happened before. That's the rule which probably will be refined after Euro 2008. But at this moment, I don't care as that was the first match that I've enjoyed of the tourney.

THANK YOU HOLLAND!!! You showed the world how to play without resorting to antifootball. you never stopped attacking, even at 0-3. Thank you Holland. I know defensive football wins titles but the way you played today wins love.
Italy = antifootball = fear and respect but never love.
Holland = Total football = love from the football community.

From Advice to Referees
11.11:
"A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position. Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his or her off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position."
Panucci was stupid, with the scramble that was going on, there is no way you should be feigning injury.
Lesson to Italians, the game is played on your feet, not your back.

It's a bit like when you see a goal disallowed for offside when a keeper has moved forward and there's only one defender between the striker and the goal, rather than the usual defender and keeper - people seem to moan that somehow it shouldn't be offside.
Under the laws of the game there's no doubt that it was the correct call. That it "seems a bit odd" is irrelevant. There isn't any grey area about it. The defender counts as being on the pitch.

You should know by now that BigSoccer has many grey areas where reality ceases to exist :D

Wesley is 'da man
And much as I hate HSV, vd Vaart is pretty awesome as well

Oh please, antifootball? More like antitactics and antidefense! Holland just woke up, they were "antifootball" in the quals. Now go away.
Very decisive win for the Netherlands, but not as one-sided as the score would suggest. The first goal was a fluke, and the next two were counterattacks. Even so, the Dutch were clearly the more dangerous team, even before the first goal. Sneijder and Van der Vaart are a formidable pair in the midfield. I'm not convinced by the Dutch defense, though - they were fortunate not to give up a goal or two.
Italy displayed some nice individual skill and passing during the moments when they managed some possession, but it's not clear how they far they can go without either of the central defenders who have led the team for the past decade. They haven't produced a world-class defender since Nesta (Grosso and Zambrotta are both converted midfielders) and are now paying the price.
