Italy is a great sporting nation, they had a marathon runner who won a recent Olympic Marathon, they have great basketball.
But in Calcio, clearly, the scandals are a big part of the history there as well, the questionable tactics on the field of play which was one game after another 2 years ago.
All of this with the Ultras and play even being stopped.
Great people, but too often we hear from the blowhards.
But in '94, I think Ireland defeated Italy in the opening round and Italy carried on to go to the Finals and that was a classy team with Baggio and the others.

Italy has a record of starting slow, so people shouldn't count them out yet.
In 2006, there was this horrible game against the US where Italy was lucky to get the draw.
In 1982, they drew all three of their first round matches against Poland, Peru and Cameroon and still went on to win it all.
In 1970 they drew against Uruguay and Israel and still went on to the final coming out victorious against Germany in the epic clash in the semis (luckily though ;))

A good example however, would be the fact that they have the nerve to complain about a legit goal (albeit a bit harsh pherhaps)
I think that's a bit harsh; I don't see that much complaining and I think most of us realize we would have lost anyways.

True the players didn't do any complaining after the fact. On the pitch they did complain but what did you expect....to read the fine print on a rule that I have never seen taken into account (and I have watched a lot of football).

Then why start a thread named "was Ruud offside"?????

Well I just had a look at that thread and it appears it was started by a USMNT fan. And it doesn't necessarily mean that the person thinks that italy lost because of that call; they may just want to debate the call itself.
I agree that some people are complaining about the call though, but really in the Italy forum the general consensus appears to be that whether the call was valid or not is not important, as there are maaany other reasons that we lost.

Fair enough, I still think Italy will make the QF's btw
I havent seen anything in France or Romania to think otherwise

Every team (except maybe Holland, Portugal & Germany) will make adjustments. Let's see what happens.

That's what gets me though, Wasn't Toni or one of your players booked for protesting too? It's a double injustice and really gets my blood pressure up when things like that happen.

That is what you get when a player is confronted with a highly unlikely situation and not understanding the rules of the game completely. A player can spend his career never seeing the rule in practice.
Panucci being injured or out of the field doesn't matter one bit. Being injured is irrelevant and if a defender stumbled and injured himself just inside the field you know he would still be considered to be a factor in playing an attacker onside. It would be harsh to disallow a goal because a player got himself injured. If it was an opponent that injured him it would be a foul.
No player can take himself out of the field, intentionally or via injury and a defender not interfering doesn't matter in the offside rule. Only an attacker not interfering is a factor! If an defender doesn't do anything isn't he not interfering either? Not interfering by defenders is just bad defending.

According to some refs consultants for french TV, there is offside because when a player is out of the pitch, he's not part of the game.
This is according to the spirit of football, no matter what justifications you try to find in the rules.
By the way, Netherlands were really impressive and deserve this large victory. I'm not what you can call a pro-Italian and i just hope this tournament will be fair for all teams.

No....... when it comes to the Italians NEW rules are made or the interpretation of the rules are changed:rolleyes:
People use a magnifying glass to interpret yesterday's 1st goal but still disagree that Grosso path to goal was hindered to merit a PK against Australia.
Take your pick ....ANTI ITALIAN FANS !!!!!!!!

Come on, this call was absolutely 100% correct. You might not agree with the rules, but that's what they say.
Also, apart from 2002, Italy has very often profited from dubious calls. Since I'm watching the Spain vs. Russia game at the moment, I have to think of the Euro 96 for example when Italy won against Russia thanks to a goal that was offside by a mile.
Things like this get evened out eventually. But the Holland goal was perfectly legal. And it's not that this goal would have mattered anyway. So could we finally bring this discussion to an end please?

It is fitting that the Italians gave up a goal from a decision by the refs. For the entire game, it seemed that their offensive strategy was to get close to the goal and then try and get a free kick or penalty. Every time the Italians had the ball within 25 yards, they went down and looked for a call. It was a pathetic effort and they deserved what they got.
But, the Dutch played soccer the way it should be played. Just a beautiful game to watch.

Agreed ....but it was someone else who once again brought up the Australia WC06 game.

This is NOT what I saw. I saw the dutch getting warned for their tackles from behind while the Italians were getting booked.
You don't believe me ...watch the game again

I saw Toni and Gatusso looking for calls every time they had the ball. The Italians knew that they didn't have the firepower without Totti.
Also, that might have been the worst game I've ever seen Pirlo play for Italy. He played some of the worst balls I've ever seen

Totti ???
He has long been forgotten.
We didn't need him to Euro qualify from the group of death and he didn't do much at WC06.
