Does last nights crowd and atmosphere convince you that the NYC/tri state area should be the "home" of our national team (ala Wembley for England?)

Or do you attribute more to the fact we were playing Argentina, the number one ranked team in the world?

It would go a long way for national team to consistantly play in front of home crowds like that.

I think the US is too big to have a "home" venue.

That said, when there is a truly big time game, I think New York can support better than any other city/stadium in the country.

In the US' proposal to host the 2018 World Cup, it includes the final being played at the new Giants Stadium (being built currently). Hopefully, the US would get the opportunity to play the opening game at that stadium in front of 80K+ people.

The combo of New York, New England, Philly, DC repping strong combined with hardcores coming in from around the country just makes it unique.

Obviously the USA is much larger than most other nations, but NYC is still pretty easy to get to, even for someone like me out in the PNW. 3 major airports, countless trains, and not to mention the 20 or so million people that already live there.

The other option I guess would be Chicago, which is more centrally located for everyone.

I just really like the idea of the USA playing home games in front of crowds like that every time.

I think that's what made the atmosphere so awesome... A centralized location for four different, well organized, passionate group of soccer fans to meet up behind one common cause. I was standing with a bunch of DC fans at one point, Philly fans at another point, and ended up in a mix of New York and Philly fans for the end.

Is the new stadium being built with International football in mind?

Correct.

As I said, the US' plan to host the 2018 World Cup include Giants Stadium being the venue to host the WC Final.

FWIW, some info on the new stadium, looks like it'll be a good one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Meadowlands_Stadium

The only concern for a WC final would be the weather. As bad as yesterday was, imagine if it'd been an early afternoon kickoff (which a WC final would need to be to accomodate Euro TV). IIRC the initial design for the stadium included a retractable roof but they weren't able to get the funding on it...might turn out to be a concern. For that reason, whatever the plan calls for now, I wouldn't be surprised if the final turns out to be played in San Francisco (if the 49ers can get a new stadium) or Dallas.

I am pretty sure Dallas in July would be more miserable than NYC.

New Cowgirls stadium will have a retractable roof and AC, and will be expandable to seat 100k.

Don't rule out Los Angeles for the final. The Rose Bowl is contemplating a $200 million renovation.

Its not going to happen until 2022 anyways, so a lot could happen between now and then.

2018 hasn't been ruled out and even if we do focus on 2022, we only have 4 years before we have to get our bid together. That means a plan on what stadiums to use and what renovations will occur at those venues. With a $200 million renovation (possibly double that with building costs rising) of a public facility that gets little support from the city, the USSF has to figure out the status of an LA stadium in a World Cup bid soon.

Just a quick note, you can’t use NYC-area as you’re “home” stadium as you’d never be playing “home” games there. Way too many diverse populations. Great for those of us who live here, bad for getting outnumbered 6 to 1 on soccer game day. I love this place, but even last night it was 4 to 1 Argies at least.

The only real things NYC has going for it is a close proximity to Europe for those players, a shocking amount of flight options, and a large local population to draw from. Columbus has none of that (or, a lot less of it) and that is why it’s a great place for USA-Mexico games. It would be like have 2 games in the Azteca to put make NYC the Wembley of the USA.

And, no offense, but spare me on the Rose Bowl. You already had 2 world cup finals (mens & womens). Give the new Dallas, NY or other stadiums a shot please before you get your THIRD world cup final in the same stadium, piggy. :p

Haha well I actually don't think it SHOULD go to the Rose Bowl. I think New York is where it should be, but as we are speculating, the Rose Bowl has to be in the discussion. Los Angeles does need to be a host city though and that could be an issue because the Rose Bowl renovation is far from certain and there is no suitable stadium is Los Angeles.

I'd bet the Redskins will have a domed stadium in DC. Probably at the site of RFK. LA had finals already, send it elsewhere.

The Final will be in NY or LA.

That's where the interest lies and would appeal for trying to get a world cup bid.

Q: Should Giants Stadium be the USSF home venue?
A: No. The USSF should have no home venue.

The Final will be in NY or LA.

That's where the interest lies and would appeal for trying to get a world cup bid. It will be in NY if there is a suitable stadium. Despite the LA pleas, NY is still easily the center of the US universe to the outside world. LA is so far distant second that it isn't even worth mentioning. Again, if there is a suitable stadium in NY, it's a wrap.

It has more to do with our opponents then the area IMO but a big stadium is needed for an atmosphere like last night's.

I attended last night's game and I also attended Brazil v USA last year in Chicago. The big names lure more casual fans to the stadium. The singing/dancing/chanting of the die-hard fans gets contagious and the casual fans will join in. I remember against Brazil it was 73,000+ and even Ives Galarcep wrote about how Chicago should see more games as the atmosphere was electric. Again, a big stadium is needed for an atmosphere like that of yesterday's, but it has more to do with our opponents. I doubt there would be as many fans chanting and screaming had the U.S. been playing Jamaica, Ireland etc.

nah... columbus was incredible against mexico in '05... there were less than 30K at the match and it was a better atmosphere than last night...

I do agree that the opponent brings out the casual fan though... the atmosphere at GS wouldn't have been the same say we were playing T&T or El Salvador in a WCQ...
