"Only" 28.05 million in Germany.
That number is extremely misleading though, as it doesn't include the millions of people who watched the game in pubs, cafes and on public screens. There were more than 500,000 people at Berlin's "Fanmeile" alone. I wouldn't be the least surprised, if the real number was actually 15 or 20 million higher.

I'd be surprised if less than 50 million had seen the game (probably a lot more). And of the remaining millions, a lot have probably been following it on the radio (like cab drivers, police officers, etc. who can't watch the game).
I wonder, when they calculate those ratings, do they include friends that come over? I bet most people watching at home were having a sort of a "Euro final party" with lots of friends.
So is the 28 million number the number of actual people watching the game or the number of households?

What has been the audience in Germany and in Spain ?
The total (TSN+RDS ) of viewers in Canada has been 1.42 million and the average audience for game of Euro 2008 has been 309.000 viewers ( +7% compared to Euro 2004 ). These numbers are better than USA ratings ( 32 million of inhabitants in Canada and 302 million in USA.... ), that however are very good.

In Spain the average number of viewers was 14.5 millions. The peak was 18 millions in the last minutes, which was almost 90% of viewers. It became the most watched TV event ever.

What is the total number of people watching the final?
In 2004, I remember it was like 153 million. This year's number must have be much better just because Germany and Spain both have huge populations.

I wonder what the WORLDWIDE audience was? I'm guessing around 500 million or more?
You think it would be higher this year since you have 2 big countries in the final with strong leagues in both countries as opposed to 2004.

Here is an article about the 10 biggest sporting events in the World. It is dated only a day after Euro 2008 began and it lists the World Cup 2006 as number 1 and they a cumalitive audience of over 26 Billion with around 700 million watching the final.

They list Euro 2004 as number 3 with a cumalitive audience of 7.9 billion but it may be less this year with no England but maybe not.
The Super Bowl probably shouldn't be ranked as high as 4 since the NFL likes to exaggerate about how popular they really are and I don't see the Cricket World Cup as being that high either.
