How popular is the Euro in South America, does anyone know????
Lots of people glued to their TV, or does nobody care????
ESPN Latin America is showing all the games. But the games are also in the afternoon since we're in the American continent, so I dunno.

Surely more numbers then the US, but I don't think it would be a huge difference.

Actually he may be right, as Dutch numbers take in account the number of viewers, which is everybody that has watched the game on their tv for at least 1 minute and the people who watch it in public places like pubs. I think the UEFA only looks at the people who watched it at home. More than 10 million people in the Netherlands have watched the Netherlands - Italy game and over 11 million have watched the game against France, that is the ones in pubs etc taken into account.

So do all the numbers for this tournament. You actually think UEFA has the means to get its own numbers? Ofcourse they don't. They use the Kijkonderzoek numbers, the only agency capable. Their method hasn't changed since 1998 and does indeed include pubs and clubhouses. The guy made an very uninformed statement, and that's something a high UEFA official should be very careful to avoid. Ratings are indeed based on the number of people who have at least watched an entire uninterrupted minute. The marketshare indicates the average percentage of people watching tv that were tuned in at any moment.

Anyways, here are the missing Dutch ratings:

Austria - Poland 2,8m 44,7%
Crotia - Germany 2,5m 57,2%
Netherlands - France 7,5m 84,9%
Italy - Romania 3,1m 62,4%
Greece - Russia 2,6m 42,6%
Sweden - Spain 2,4m 56,5%

Turkey - Czech R. 3,5m 48,4%
Switzerland - Portugal 0,4m 5,6%
Austria - Germany 3,1m 45,7%
Poland - Croatia 0,5m 7,3%
Netherlands - Romania 7,3m 80,4%
France - Italy 0,4m 4,7%

Of course he uses the same source, however they seem to use a different system to calculate the viewers as the number of viewers from kijkonderzoek are higher than the ones from the UEFA.

There is no indication whatsoever that they do, and if truly was a new record then kijkonderzoek would have made it public. It would have been all over the news, instead of merely being mentioned by a UEFA-official.

France-Italy 13.2 million on M6 ( private channel in France ). It is the record of audience for M6, but I don't understand because it is so low. I am sure that if it was broadcast on TF1 surely the audience was as in Italy ( 23.5 million )..... What is your explanation ?

Yes, because M6 is a small channel TV. TF1's market share was for a long time between 35% and 40% and M6 only 11-12%.

TF1 is the first channel tv in France and can reach big ratings. The record of TF1 was beat during the last World's Cup in 2006 with France against Portugal : 22 199 760 viewers for a market share of 76,7%.

For M6 the score of 13 million viewers is the record of the channel since its creation in 1987. The last record was 8,2 million viewers with the first French real tv, Loft Story (the French Big Brother version) and more recently the match between France and Roumania with 9,6 million viewers (54%) :D

29.540.000 in Germany. The record high is 29.660.000 from the WC semi against Italy. So it came close.

These numbers dont include fans that watch the game in bars or in public viewing etc. This seems to be different from country to country - or otherwise i couldnt believe the numbers from Turkey.

I read that according to ARD and ZDF the number of people watching the game in bars and at public viewing events is approximatively 10.000.000. So, ~ 40.000.000 people in Germany watched the game.

It still sounds rather low...that would mean that half the German population DIDN'T watch the game...can't believe it...

I agree. I live in Germany and the number of people not watching the game can not be higher than 20%. The country literally shut down.

It would be the same with about 80% of the population of England watching if they made it this far?

From the June 25th LA times
The Euro 2008 quarterfinal match between Germany and Portugal, ESPN said, drew a 0.9 rating, meaning it was on TV in an average of 880,500 homes and was watched by 1.11 million viewers, a fraction of the audience that watched the NBA Finals.

But ESPN spokesman Mac Nwulu said comparing audiences for soccer to U.S. favorites such as the NBA or NFL "is akin to comparing apples to oranges."

Instead, he argued, "Euro 2008 is exceeding expectations." The European games, on average, have hauled in a 0.5 rating (about 655,000 viewers) on ESPN2 -- a 67% increase above the average rating for the time period for that network. He said broadcasters have taken note of a significant ratings surge for ESPN Deportes, the all-sports Spanish-language TV network, which has been feasting off Euro 2008 audiences. Soccer, he said, also has been a boon for ESPN360.com, with its live, online simulcasts of Euro 2008 games.

So were the ESPN ratings for the Portugal v Germany just for ESPN? Or was it for ESPN and ESPN Deportes?

Additionally, I wonder if DVR recordings are counted. ESPN360.com views should also be counted, because the games air during the workday in the USA so that might have an impact on the viewing numbers.
