Were there no MEN'S US soccer players available to do commentary on the games?
Cause they're experts on the UEFA Confederation Cup???????????????
Gray is doing such a good job that one of the Sports Talk stations here in Houston was talking about him this morning, that is unprecedented.

"Analysis" in this case is just "commentary," right?
No.
When I hear the word "commentary" applied to a sports broadcast, that implies that the person is in some way discussing the live action on the field.
Foudy is only on the air for pre-game, halftime and post-game analysis.

I was being facetious. Foudy brings nothing to the table whatsoever on the ESPN broadcasts.

She's the "Paula Abdul" of the broadcasts...

Agreed. Gray is a great commentator. I never heard much of him till now, but i can see why he's so well respected.

I really enjoy Andy Gray. Very informative, but plenty entertaining as well.
I can't stand Julie Foudy.

I have a question
Has ESPN always not actually sent thier announcers to the games, and i guess just gad them announce them from a studio booth? I just realized that it would be impossible for Gray and Smyth to trasnport from Europe to Bristol.
Does anybody know if they do this for Champions leauge games? I guess ive never payed that much attention and always assumed that they were always there, just moved to another part of Europe (or actually usually from Anfield to Old Trafford) when it moved from Tuesday to Wednsdays.....

As far the Champions League is concerned, I think they are usually only actually at the match for the final.

That's correct. I suspect that they'll send the guys over for the Euro 08 Final, but not 100% sure on that one.

Derek Rae called the CL semifinal and final on site in Europe. All other CL games were done from Bristol (ESPN HQ).
It seems that the Euro 2008 broadcasts, unlike the CL ones, are for the U.S. only. So it's unlikely that ESPN is high on the priority list for on site commentary positions even if they wanted to do so.

And they shouldn't have made Foudy what seems to be the go-to opinion with Gray or Smyth backing her up. I guess they feel she's graduated from the #2 spot. But AG seems fine with it, very understanding at the experience gap, and seems to be enjoying his exchanges with the Americans.
That's good to hear, I had these visions of Andy Gray trying to take over the show by showing his superior understanding :D

During the '06 World Cup, the ESPN crews were actually in Germany for most, if not all, of the games.
For the CL, they were only in country for the final.

Actually I don't think that's true. Their primary team of O'Brien and Balboa were there for the U.S. games, and perhaps their secondary team was there as well, but all the other teams were in Bristol.
Same problem, lots of countries who want to broadcast the games, and small press boxes in the stadiums. FIFA has a ranking system of who gets the slots in the press boxes at games. The broadcasts of the teams playing our first, etc. There's only a limited number of spots, which is why the ESPN teams aren't at the Euros, since the U.S. isn't playing.

I had a little Euro 2008 party last night to watch Tivo'd coverage of the Turkey/Portugal and Netherlands/Italy matches, and I sure would have appreciated the Turkey/Portugal game a hell of a lot more if the screen crawl hadn't announced the final score AS THE GAME STARTED! Who's the idiot in charge of that, and have they been fired yet? Of course, there was still the suspense in the last three minutes of extra time of "when're they gonna get that last goal?" Sheesh.

You would think after all these years the spazzos would realize this is going to happen and not look at the ticker or put duct tape over it.
