I think every Austrian will heavily disagree. They're not german or are Americans english?

Germany may have enough points or they may have not but they will fight for the win nonetheless. A victory vs Austria is very important for all germans.

Germany has a moral responsibility to let Austria get through to the second round. =D

Will have to see how things play out on the pitch tomorrow. In any case, it's fair to say Germany will be playing for a win in their last group match -- otherwise, they'd never hear the end of it.

Yeah, the same one like Austria had in 1978. :-)

No, it's because we'll probably need that win (either to reach spot 2 or to finish the group on top).

I think the original poster is referring to the 1982 WC match where Austria and Germany 'played' to a 1-0 win that saw both teams go through at the 'liability' of Algeria and Chile. Anyhoo.. here's what I got from wikipedia.org on the event;

Group 2 saw one of the great World Cup upsets on the first day with the 2-1 victory of Algeria over reigning European Champion West Germany. This memorable game resulted in the controversial match between West Germany and Austria, their third and final match. As Algeria had already played its third match the day before, West Germany and Austria knew that a West German win by 1 or 2 goals would qualify them both, while a larger German victory would qualify Algeria over Austria, and a draw or an Austrian win would eliminate the Germans — the fourth team in the group, Chile, was eliminated regardless of the outcome. After 10 minutes of furious attack, West Germany succeeded in scoring through a goal by Horst Hrubesch. After the goal was scored, the two German-speaking teams went into an unspoken agreement and just kicked the ball around aimlessly for the rest of the match. Chants of "Fuera, fuera" ("Out, out") were screamed by the appalled Spanish crowd, while angry Algerian supporters waved banknotes at the players. This sham performance was widely deplored, even by the German and Austrian fans who had hoped for a hot rematch of the 1978 FIFA World Cup match in which Austria had beaten West Germany. One German fan was so upset by his team's display that he burnt his German flag in disgust. As a result of the outcome, FIFA introduced a revised qualification system at subsequent World Cups in which the final two games in each group were played simultaneously.

If the Austrians are Germans and the Poles are Germans, it seems as though we have qualified for the knockout stage before the tournament even begun ;)

Three?

Who are they? I mean the names?

btw. we should change the thread topic then...
To: Will Germany get points in Germany-Germany match?
it would be odd...

back on topic
I think Austria will get max 1 point. It can be against Germany, cuz if Germany will be sure of going through - they can (not saying they will) "aim" at a certain opponent in the next stage.

Robert Kovač, Niko Kovač and Ivan Klasnić. All three born and raised in Germany. :)

And since this is the Austria-Germany thread, Martin Harnik was born and raised in Germany as well and his mother is German. ;) His father is Austrian though.

If Germany wins against Croatia, I could see Austria getting a draw or even a win against Germany. German players with yellow cards would be rested as would players with minor injuries who would otherwise play.
The others would try to avoid injuries and hence play softer as they would if they needed a result.

Germany is going to want to win this game, but they're not willing to risk anything should they have 6 points by then. Austria on the other hand will do everything to beat their neighbor to the north no matter what.

I agree with you, but only to a point. Winning the group and getting the first place is still top priority.

QFT. We really don’t want to have to face Portugal in the Quarters.

Doesn't matter if we beat them in the quarters or in the semis. ;) Also, what makes you think that Portugal will win this group? That's not a done deal.

Plus, under the scenario I described, only Austria could challenge us for first place if they beat Poland and Germany. If Germany has 6 points before the Austria match, neither Poland nor Croatia could get ahead of us thanks to our head-to-head results.

Edit: Actually, thinking about this, let's just pretend for a moment that Germany beats Croatia, Croatia beats Poland and Austria beats both, Poland and Germany.

Then Germany, Croatia and Austria would all have 6 points. On head-to-head, Germany would be ahead of Croatia, Croatia would be ahead of Austria and Austria would be ahead of Germany = impossible. Would they then just go back to goal difference? - Probably - which means that Germany could be out with 6 points. So with that in mind, maybe Germany would in fact risk some more in the Austria game and not just play it safe...

I thought it was decided off goal difference? If it is head to head, then obviously if we beat Croatia it is no problem. But dodging portugal in the first round is like nekkibasara said, quite desirable.
