I thought it was decided off goal difference? If it is head to head, then obviously if we beat Croatia it is no problem. But dodging portugal in the first round is like nekkibasara said, quite desirable.
I'm not 100% sure, but I thought it was head-to-head...

well if thats the case, you're 100% right. Germany B vs. Austria. We have a good B side, they beat England @ Wembley:)
Could anyone confirm that rule for us?

[quote=benztown;14846909]Doesn't matter if we beat them in the quarters or in the semis. ;) Also, what makes you think that Portugal will win this group? That's not a done deal.

Considering that Portugal haven't beaten Poland in the past two times they've met and since Poland could very likely finish 2nd in Group B, I'm sure Germany would be happy to let Poland have a go in the quarters against Portugal first.
Doesn't matter how good a team is, deep down they would still want to avoid the other great teams til the end.

If it's goal difference, the Italians might have screwed themselves against the dutch.

QFT. We really don’t want to have to face Portugal in the Quarters.
I wouldn't mind at this point, I think Portugal will be more scared of Germany than the other way around. :D Anyways, I see both those teams meating in semis as both will most likely finish first in their groups.
I don't think they will get any points, one would be a great acheivement if it actually happened. Anyways, Klose or Gomez need a few goals in that game to raise their tally for top goalscorer of the tourney. :p I think the topic should be "How much will Germany score on Austria?" ......... Just messin, good luck to you guys but I think 2nd place is between Croatia or Poland.

Hopefully after we demolish the Croatians tomorrow, second place will be Poland’s for the taking.

Of course it is. :-)

I'd be careful with such statements at the moment.
Just let us lose to Croatia tomorrow and Poland or Austria win their game ... then we'd even have to worry about getting serious trouble to pass the group.
Hopefully after we demolish the Croatians tomorrow
Yeah, we'll easily beat them 5:0...

It's H2H, but even this tie-breaker uses goal difference to a certain degree.
Because if two teams have the same number of points they tied with each other in 95% of the cases and if three teams are tied on points you use GD as well but only from the related games.

Doesn't matter how good a team is, deep down they would still want to avoid the other great teams til the end.I would honestly rather play Portugal than face Poland again. The Poles may not have the so called talent that we do, but playing a team hungry for its first ever win against you in the semi-finals would be very difficult.

Now that the Croats have put the screws to Germany, I expect the Austrians to face a serious, hardcore steamroll in the final group match. Especially if Poland win today and the possibility of 3 teams on 6 point becomes real.
Unfortunate really.

Well, if Austria and Germany both play the way they did today, Austria will definitely have a chance.

They (Austria) put in two good performances...can they pull off a third? I hope not.

going for a draw between Austria and Germany, would be terrible for the Austrians but hell it would even be more terrible for Ballack and the veterans in the Nationalmannschaft. This tournament might be their last chance

More terrible? It would mean advancement to the next round...
To be honest Austria was a lot better agianst Croatia then we were  so I'm a little bit afraid but I'm hopeful that we at least get a draw.

But Croatia were a completely different team than they were against Austria. If you look at Croatia's history in major tournaments, they always come up crappy against teams that are lower/equal to their level and then raise it against sides that are better.
1998 WC:
Played crappy vs. Jamaica, Japan, Romania
Played well vs. Germany, France, Holland
2002 WC:
Lost to Mexico & Ecuador
Beat Italy
2004 EC:
Dull draw vs. Switzerland
Almost beat champions France in next match
2006 WC:
Push Brazil all the way in narrow loss
Fail to beat Japan & Australia with uninspired performances
2008 qualifiers
Lose to Macedonia
Beat England @ Wembley couple of days later
2008 Euro
uninspiring narrow victory over lowly Austria
inspired performance and victory vs. Germany
.... I think Germany should have enough to take care of Austria. However, it would be one of the all time upsets if Austria did pull it off. Plus, would be Germany's third consecutive first round elimination in the Euros since winning it in 1996.

Germany has a moral responsibility to let Austria get through to the second round. =D
Nice joke, mate! :-)
