Looks like a good performance against Brazil was enough to bump us up a couple of spots in the FIFA rankings to number 60, remaining fourth in CONCACAF.

The Panama game won't get counted until next month's ranking, hopefully we'll have two strong performances in the qualifiers against SVaG and maybe go up another couple of notches.

Panama jumped seven spots into a tie with us. We'll have to fight hard to keep No. 4 spot in CONCACAF

Actually they are more important to Canada than to some other nations as they drive the seeding for CONCACAF qualifying and also are critical for Cdns without UK passports to be hired as pros in the UK.

qualifying doesn't matter, sooner or later you have to defeat the tougher sides, if you're going to lose it doesn't matter whether it's the first round or last...

canadians playing in the UK true but there are other places to play so it's minor

You don't get points for losing. Check out the Canada page at fifa

Ya I thought the same thing, and I was gonna say the same thing, but I see Panama went up 7 despite no games for them listed in that period. And Canada went up 2. Why? I have no idea. Meanwhile Venezuela goes up only 1 after gaining about 155 points from a draw with Honduras!!

Ok teams going down will move teams that do nothing up. But Venezuela gained ... ok ... I guess it figures. Venezuela played the draw on May 30! Alright then. Yet, you don't see figures like 150 in the ranking table, rarely does anyone register those many points. They must not just use a raw total ...

Fifa shouldn't show the ranking as +- 'Pts' on the team page. It's confusing.

The reason teams move up without gaining points is due to the fact that points are calculating on a 4 year system. So when the June 2008 rankings come out which are using the May 2008 games played, it means that the points gained in May of 2005 are no longer counted, so Canada for example may have lost a game in May 2005, so with the negative points no longer counting against us we go up in total points.

I disagree

The way CONCACAF qualifying tournament is shape could possibly see one of the best 3 teams in the region being eliminated in the second round (group stage). So, I think rankings are important. Let's say the best 3 teams in the region are Canada, Mexico and Honduras. We're place in a situation where one of those 3 teams will be eliminated before the hex.

you're right but still in the end if we don't win we don't deserve to go on...and there will always be a group of death there is no way to avoid it...euor-Italy,France,Nethlands, Romania, four very good teams only two go through it sucks but that's as good as it gets...

Not a good comparaison because in the Euro there's only one champion.

In CONCACAF you have 3/4 teams who qualify for the WC. So, you can't apply your argument ("in the end if we don't win we don't deserve to go on") to the CONCACAF situation because a team could still be deserving of a WC berth while finishing third in the group stage.

I've said it before, to avoid this situation we should start WC a bit earlier and have 2 groups of 6 instead of 3 groups of 4. Play 10 games and then have the top 3 of each group getting to the HEX. That's only 4 more games for the qualification and it only means starting the minnows games earlier.

Thx for the very good explanation! I knew they kept a rolling average or something like that but it seemed to slip my mind completely when I wrote that. I assume it's weighted, as well, with the old results carrying less weight.
