Well, is he?
If yes, then why?
If not, then who is currently better and?
This should be an interesting thread.

when i first saw this i thought nah no way then thought about it a bit and kinda thought well why not he has been so unbelivably consistent it makes sense maybe a few more brilliant games where he shone above all else would have helped his case though.

He is not even thebest centre back at his own club imo.
I have over the years hugely disliked Ferdinand. Following the drug ban he then went on to treat his own club and fans in an utterly disgracelful way all of which hardly makes him an endearing character.
With that put aside I have always said that on his day he is up there with the best but he is so inconsistant that he simply cannot be considered a great player. This season I have to admit that his consistancy has improved a lot and I think being made club & country captain (which I disagree with) seems to have added a maturity to him and I now have to admit that he is looking like one of the best defenders around.
Saying all that though, Vidic still pisses all over him.

I rate John Terry, Vidic, Puyol, Cannavaro, Nesta, Chiellini, Mexes, Juan and Lucio above him. Yes, Lucio.

He's one of the best, but not the best right now. Just Vidic, his partner, is in better moment and I'd put before him to Nesta and Carvalho.

vidic was better last season not this season. and you say ferdinand is not consistent well thats exactly what he has been this year unforgivingly consistent at least alot more so then vidic.
fair enough i would not say he is best player though either but i think it's a little unfair to claim hes so far from it.

Ferdinand is clearly the best and has succeeded Nesta in that regard.

Ferdinand is clearly better than Vidic. The latter is very, very good and they complement each other well but while Vidic's style of player gets him the headlines most are ignorant to what his partner has been doing beside him. No idea why that is the case. Many Man Utd fans would say that Ferdinand is the best player at the club, even in terms of performances, let alone the best defender.
All of that is behind him.
Ferdinand is the model of consistency. I can only assume that you did not watch any of the last season, let alone anything prior to that.

The problem is people dislike Rio Ferdinand and can never give him credit. He's been amazing this year.

lol what john terry spitting at tevez or john terry parks in a disabled spot because he cant be arsed to get a proper parking space. bet you'd have no problem calling him the best. your letting your clubs colours cloud your judgement in my opinion. ok ferdinand kicked someone his missed a drug test but hes done things wrong but so has every player.

Drug taking is one thing but then showing your loyalty by holding your club to ransom over ridiculous contract negotiations is massively disrespectful, his own fans were booing him ffs!
I know a couple of Utd fans that have never forgiven him for this and there are many others that think that way.

But this thread is called 'Is Rio Ferdinand the best centre back in the world right now?' not 'Is Rio Ferdinand an a great ambassador for English football' I don't see what his personality or past has to do with the topic of this thread at all.

Terry? LOL. He is so poor against the big teams it is untrue. Any striker with decent pace and a team with movement moves right around him (Ribery vs England (pen)). He is even worse at international level. I still blame him for getting England knocked out at Euro 2004 and he almost cost us in World Cup 2006 with 3 massive mistakes, only 1 of which lead to a goal. Terry looks good cause he battles hard and heads the ball but he gets found out against the best. Unlike Rio, who is simply the best central defender since Hierro.
