Okay, in December, the world player of the year and the two runner ups will be announced.

Who do you think the top 3 should be?

Who do you the top 3 will be?

Also, don't forget to state your reasons as well.

Some popular names for consideration:

Fernando Torres
Luca Toni
Ibrahimovic
Cristiano Ronaldo
Lionel Messi
Adebayor

I'm sure more players will announce themselves at the Euros as well and I think this'll be a good thread to bump in December, so that we can compare predictions and get all our "I told you so's" in. :D

Ribery should be in there methinks. Of course, it will come down to what happens in the Euros.

C. Ronaldo should win but I feel the Euro's will decide it.

As of right now, it's clearly Ronaldo. Toni has the best chance to beat him, imo, if he, for example, wins Euros and scores the most goals there.

The award is for Ronaldo to lose at this point. He does not need to be the MVP at the Euro 2008. He only needs a good performance. Of course, provided that no one else will give a performance liked Platini in 1984.

A standout performance like that hasn't happened in a while. Given how tight the competition will be I don't think we'll see this so if all goes accordingly, Ronaldo should walk away with the "award".

Either Ferdinand or Ronaldo. Though obviously Rio has no chance of winning WPOTY.

The only way he could possibly lose the World Player award is if one between Toni, Fernando Torres or Fabregas scores 10 goals in Euro 2008 and win the cup.
And even then, Toni (IMO the best contender) would have to play like a god, AND Ronaldo would have to miss at least 7 or 8 decisive penalties in the same match.

I don't like Ronaldo, but the dude scored more than anyone in Europe this year, and won the Premier and the Champions League.

Fabregas could score 100 goals at Euro and he still won't win it. The only 2 guys that can challenge Ronaldo at this point are Toni and Torres. But in order for them to win it, they have to lift the trophy and put in a WPOTY performence through out the tournament.

IMO no matter what happens at the euros and even if Portugal go out early. I still think Ronaldo has done enough this year to deserve the award. EPL, CL and 42 goals is plenty IMO.

I feel if Portugal go out early; he lost it right there. We have to remember no one has won this award while playing in the EPL.

Well, if you believe what you read in the papers, Ronaldo won't be playing in the EPL come December.

EPL has never been so dominant in Europe though.

That depend on the result of the Eur 2008. I think C.Ronlad is going to be the best this year, unless if france the win cup. That will put Ribery in the competition with him. Ballck was going to be in the competition if chelse win the cup of europe champion.

I think that might have been possible if Man. U. hadn't won the CL. Honestly I wouldn't put my money on him dominating the tournment as everyone is predicting. Even still, I think he will win it the player of the year award.

You don't think he's done enough to win it? Does every WPOTY have to win everything in order to win it? The kid has done everything that has been expected from him this year and nobody out there comes close to what he has done this year.

Toni had a great season and won his league and thats it. I'll admit I didn't catch any of the German league this year and only read and saw highlights of Toni and Ribery(people are saying he should be up for the award)

Torres had a great 1st season in the EPL and scored 30+ goals and thats it.

Ronaldo won the EPL, CL and led world in goals. And now if he Portugal goes out early, your saying he won't win the award because of it?? That doesn't make sense to me. What if lost the CL but won the Euros? Would he still win the award?

I understand nobody from the EPL has ever won it but if he doesn't win it this year than something is definatly wrong with this stupid award.

No, he does not have to win everything but we know how ridiculous this award has gotten over the last few years. Ronaldinho 05/06 won the CL and La Liga and he was playing at high level just like Ronaldo is now but he has a poor World Cup and the FIFA world player of the year went to Cannavaro who had a monster tournament. Zidane, who was poor that season, shows up for 2 or 3 games in the World Cup and got 2nd place.

Who should the runner ups be?

I think Toni and Torres are in with a shout, but that could depend on how they perform at the Euros.

Would be unfair if Ronaldo doesn't win it this year, imho.

I expect Messi to win it in 2009 though, and maybe more.

Oh yeah, Ronaldo is surely the player that IMO deserves it the most this year, just the Euro 2008 will be an important factor. What I'm saying is, if Luca Toni scores enough goals and Italy lifts the cup, I'm pretty sure they're gonna privilege that over Ronaldo's CL and EPL wins.

I'm not saying this is fair, I'm just saying...friggin' Sammer once won the Ballon d'or after a decent Euro 96.
