View Full Version : Would you cheer for a hated rival?

One of my team's most hated rivals, Fluminense, is currently in the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores, facing Boca Juniors. I am cheering against them, despite being from my country, because of the rivalry. Fla-Flu has a lot of tradition and I am sure most of you have heard of this derby, despite the lack of contact to South American football.
Apparently, what I thought to be obvious and clear wasn't so much so. Another Flamengo fan said he rather see Flu go on to the finals and win it, because they are from the same city and play in the same stadium as Flamengo.
So, the question that I throw out to you is, would you, under any circumstance (normal ones:p), cheer for a hated rival?
Could a Celtic fan root for Rangers in the Champion's league finals, if they played a team from another country?
Could a Lazio fan cheer for Roma in the CL finals, if they played a team from another country?

******** no.. The most important things I need to know -in order- every Sunday (and every Copa Libertadores date):
1. If River won.
2. If Boca lost.

Yes, but only if my team would benefit as a result - e.g. if a win for Swindon helped Reading get promoted, I'd want Swindon to win.

lol never realized that, I should have said depends.
If it helps Boca I'll cheer for River :p
other than that, it's exactly like locoxriver said.
The problem I have is when some fans change the order and you can tell that to them, their rival losing is just as or more important than their team winning

If a hated rival is playing against a more hated rival in a game where a win by a first hated rival would help my favorite team in any way, then I might cheer for a hated rival.

I still couldn't do it I can't stand the idea of rooting for anyone on a rival team while they where their team's jersey.

sorry folks but my man Rosicky trumps any club support
unless maybe TFC
then...
id support TFC and the team he's on
even if they're rivals ;)
or like other cases, like as someone else said, rival wins, your club goes up.
An example of this is that I love Sunderland AFC's style of play and most players (i started watching EPL this year and don't particularily have a team) and I like Keane, and Yorke, and Chopra, but Rosicky my man HAS to be at Arsenal, so i'm torn.
Then throw Petr Cech at chelsea into the mix!

In most cases, yes.
I rather see Bayern or Bremen win a European title than a team from another country. When it comes to international play, teams from Germany always rank above teams from other countries, regardless of whether they are rivals in the league.
Not to mention that the more successful the other Bundesliga teams are, the better it is for German football and the UEFA-ranking.

When I think about it, I agree.
Any Canadian, Czech, ...............perhaps English or American clubs should win even if they are rivals.
In fact, I must say i've already cheered for a rival team, Sparta Prague in the CL even tho im a Slavia fan.

I still couldn't do it I can't stand the idea of rooting for anyone on a rival team while they where their team's jersey.the thing is, you aren't cheering for them. You're just cheering against the team they happen to playing.
My old boss, a Chelsea fan, did admit that he went to Millwall once and enthusiastically cheered all three Millwall goals that afternoon. He did add that that it was a Millwall v Chelsea match in the days before segregation, and he was rather alarmed to find he was the only Chelsea fan in that part of The Den.

Suppose Liverpool is playing MU in the last game of the season, and MU win would save Chelsea from relegation (Liverpool would be relegated), while any other result would mean Liverpool stays in the Premiership, and Chelsea goes down. Would you not root for MU in that case?
