Seven days, fourteen hours, seven minutes, and two seconds until the tournament begins and I felt it was time to start this thread to get this ball rolling. I decided to do a bit of reconnaissance on les bleus group opponents, so I watched Italy - Belgium and Holland - Denmark today.

First I didn't think Belgium would be and adequate judge on Italy's current strength and I wasn't far off. It ended 3-1 and that's how the game played. It wasn't really until around the 60th minute that the belgians even had a real decent chance, and by then the Italians really took their foot off the pedal. It started getting real choppy too. Mirallas came on and finally started asking questions of the italian defense, and the goal in stoppage time came of some poor defending on a corner.

DiNatale had a well taken brace, though the 2nd one was a gift really by the Belgian defense. I thought he looked pretty good out there, but it was my first time really taking a look at him. He has quick feet and looks like a problem causer. I don't know much about him. Del Piero also came on and was abusing the belgian back 4. He is a real classy player, even though he took a bit of a dive in the 37th :D. I don't know about Pirlo, I don't think he did much today. A few good passes but I don't think he provided much of a spark. Not a big fan of him anyway. Panucci was quiet, but Zambrotta looked real dangerous going forward, especially in the second half. Nice to see him not go doing in that scoring chance he created late in the game. Overall I wouldn't say Italy was really tested and it wasn't much of an indicator.

Holland Denmark on the other hand, was a bit more telling. I don't know about this Holland team defensively. They look pretty vulnerable. The announcers were harping about the central defense but I think the problem is before that. The Oranje don't seem to pressure enough from the midfield. I felt a need for a dominate ball destroyer in there. They did play a solid Denmark team, and Bendtner was the man of the match in my opinion. Even with these points I felt Holland were good enough offensively to win that game. Twice in the first half Robben just squeaks shots past the far post. I thought Robben was great out there, taking on defenders, making excellents runs and passes. The Real Madrid trio in general played real well. Nice attacking play between them to lead to Van Nistelrooy's goal. Van der Vart was getting himself in to some real good positions but had absolutely no end product. He seemed to be shanking shots left and right. When Sneijder took his position in the center, the team looked livelier after taking a lot of pressure from the Danes. If Van Persie is starting, VDV will be benched and Sneijder will be in his place i bet. Babel was a real spark off the bench as well, and he immediately makes his presence felt, which I like about him. He's one who's not afraid to run at anyone.

Denmark was playing them hard though away from home too. They were passing behind the dutch defenders pretty easily, and Bendtner was running wild out there. He was getting free headers, beating defenders head on and really troubling them. He just toyed with the dutch defense in there 6 yard box when he passed the ball to Poulsen for the equalizer. Poulsen himself should have had a brace, off another unmarked header in the 55th. Bendtner got a good long range shot in stoppage time, and almost stole a victory for the danes. Despite this Vennegor of H. or Kuyt should have given them the win at the end but they screwed it up. Shaky from the dutch but the do look really dangerous going forward.

Hmmm, Babel's been ruled out of the tournament. Don't know if he would have started or made an impact, though.

Salut les amis!

I read on TSN earlier today that Ribéry is out with an injury. Is this true? I hadn't heard about this anywhere so I found it kind of odd, and it could be that the columnist had no idea what he was talking about. Thanks guys.

(and by the way I really REALLY hope that by the time France and Italy play each other, the group will be pretty much decided and the game won't be meaningful. Otherwise, I think I'll have a heart attack)

There's nothing on L'equipe about Ribery being injured. You almost gave me a heart attack!
But it's true that Babel is done, tore his achilles. That sucks for Holland, though he most likely wasn't going to start, he definately was gonna see some time come off the bench to try to unlock tiring defenses. That hurts them against us and Italy.

Edit.
Apparently Vieira will miss the next two south american friendlies and maybe the the game against Roumanie as well!!! Left thigh injury L'equipe is saying.

Im not worried about the nil nil score line with Paraguay. The team look so lively and strong going forward in the first half, that I am supremely confident the goals will come.

I more or less agree with your analysis of the Italy vs. Belgium match, but the one part I'd have to disagree with is regarding Pirlo. Right next to Di Natale he was easily Italy's most dangerous player on the pitch. Defensively he was consistent and reliable, but on attack he was simply picture perfect. He's the one that did a fantastic job at creating the scoring opportunity for Di Natale on the first goal, and other than that he was making numerous great long passes to the attackers. He also gave the Belgian midfield and backline constant trouble with his dribbling. Pirlo will definitely be our creative inspiration on attack once again in this tournament.

I'll also describe Di Natale a bit to you considering you're not too familiar with him (as are most people that don't follow Serie A to thuroughly). He's your typical late bloomer at almost 31 years of age. He was always a great talent, but never really got serious notice till about 2-3 years go. He's a small guy with more or less the same stature as Del piero, but he's fast as hell, has incredible dribbling abilities and technique, and constantly provides dangerous crosses from the left side. He is normally a secunda punta (second striker), but Donadoni uses him mainly as a winger now in the wide position, where he has more room and space to take advantage of his speed and shiftiness. He was easily one of our best players during qualifying, and after that performance against Belgium he'll likely be our starter in attack at Euro.

Tomorrow is the very crucial game against Columbia. They are going to be a tough opponent, and this is the last game before the start of the tournament, so Domenech has to get the kinks worked out.

It'll also be interesting to see what lineup Domenech puts out - he has to keep his players fresh in order for them to be ready for Romania four days later, but he also has to play them in order to keep them match sharp.

Cannavaro is out of the Euro's as well. Big blow for the Italians.

I think losing De Rossi would be a bigger blow for the Azzurri since Cannavaro hasn't been good at all in the past 2 seasons in Madrid. Also I think that, like us, the Italians do have very good depth in defense. I'm not saying it isn't a big blow, though I think it's more mental than it is in match terms. Cannavaro is a leader on that team, as is Vieira on our team, which is why I think, despite Flamini's outstanding season, if Vieira is ruled out, it would indeed be a huge blow for us. I'm hoping that is not the case.

Did anybody catch any of the games from group A? I'm watching Croatia play Austria now, and it's not as bad as I thought it would be. Austria is putting up a decent fight and almost poached a goal here in the first half. Germany Poland is what I waiting for really.

I haven't watched any of the matches today, although I intend to catch the Germany one, but I did watch both yesterday. In my opinion, the Czechs aren't the same team as the one that made it to the semis of the last Euro, whereas I think Portugal could be dangerous, but we match up well against them, I think.

The dutch were just gifted a goal by the linesman. Rudd clearly offsides and now Holland is up 1 -0 with 30 played. Really bad call.

Yea the last Dutch goal was well executed. At this point Italy would be lucky for a draw. Looks like France v. Italy is going to be a huge match after all.

It will be. The way we played against Romania was a disgrace and I'm worried about our forwards.

There's no reason that France cant play attacking football like the Dutch.
