I know that England isn't the best squad in the world... but they're contenders. Beckham could imagine lilfting the World Cup or European Championship.
Scotland? They qualify now and then... but I have trouble believing that young Darren could become *that* invested in a team that would be relegated from the Prem if it were a club side.
I guess Captain America & the rest of the Americans aren't that invested in the US team then. Pride in your country (or club) is not dependent on challenging for trophies. Don't worry, I realize the US is much better than Scotland right now.

Pride in your country is not necessarily equivalent to pride in playing for your national team. That's the critical flaw, imo, in the logic of people who always take the "country over club" perspective.
Do you really think that playing for, say, the the Faroe Islands would compare with playing for Man Utd?
People get invested in different teams for different reasons. I think playing for a side is more meaningful when there's greater skill, a larger chance of winning serious trophies, and you play for them in many more games.
If I were a player, I think I'd rather win the World Cup than any competition on the planet. But I also think that, outside of maybe the very top countries, playing for my club would be more important for me aggregately. Not because I don't care for my country - but because it's more meaningful in terms of actual achievement.

I'm not calling your opinion completely wrong here, haven... just that somed players do take country over club when they play for a better club than country, one great example off the top of my head would be Liam Brady (Arsenal & Juvenuts) in the early 80's when Ireland, under Eoin Hand were pretty woeful.

Haha, didn't even see this before posting my "Liam Miller" thread. I guess me and Liam just have some subconscious bond.... whoooooa.....

Former United midfielder Juan Veron loaned to Inter for a year. I think Italy is a much better place for Seba's game. If he can get healthy again, he should do well.

Hopefully he'll get back to his best. Though he didn't do a great deal for Utd you could see that he was a quality player that didn't find the speed of the Premiership to his liking. He may well come back to his best in the slower moving Serie A.
Best of luck to him.

Haven't heard to much about this kid. Does anyone know how good he is and if so why would Barca let him go?

He was "allowed" to leave because he was still on an unprotected youth contract... so we just had to sign him and pay what his wages would have been to Barca... basically a small amount... well, there were 3 other clubs interested, including Arsenal, and then Chelsea at the last minute. THta is the best indicator of his skill and potential for now. We do know that he did not play for the senior team at all. So that means he has a lot of developing to do.. however, just turning 17 means he will have a lot of time to do so... and seeing as he was very, very cheap there was little risk... but all in all, we should not expect to see him play for the first team till he is 20 or 21. By then we will know if he will be the next O'Shea, Silvestre, or even the next Rio.. his competition will be Spector, who is very promissing, maybe the two can form a partnership and spur each other on in training...

-- interview with Ronaldo from manunitedportugal transalted via rednews: “People have accused me that I’m selfish but it’s all a question of choices. Sometimes people say that I have to pass more the ball but, I’m at United for something and not for luck. It's people's opinion and I have to respect. My national Portuguese coach Luiz Filipe Scolari has the job to advice me and I don’t see his opinion like a critic but, more as an incentive. Sir Alex Ferguson is different from Luiz Filipe Scolari, each one has one method and different ways to work. Both give me some incentives but all positives”.
“The European ball “Roteiro” it’s different from the others. It’s a very quick ball that can be tricked when you run faster, the ball could split from its normal line. Because of the new design it can difficult but, we only have to adapt well before the games. The ball makes part of me, for sometimes I even think I don’t have the ball on my feet. I’m there and I start dribbling around. I invented a new trick with this ball and some players of my team have already learned from me. I don’t really nam this dribble, I have to invent some for sure”.
“I cut my hair days ago because I’m thinking Portugal can reach the final of the tournament. So, I don’t want my long hair
to disturb my form of play for my country. I decided to cut the hair very short so not have an inconvenience on the field”.
“I’m here to do my best. Every player wants to play at European but, it’s not possible. I have to wait for my time and, on every time I enter on the field I want to give my best for Portugal team to win. I’m now 19 but, for me, the age doesn’t count. If I don’t play on first game I will continue to work to play on the others. The first game it’s almost here and it’s normal that the players feel some pressure but, we all are relaxed and just waiting for the game. We want to make a good start”.They must've used Babelfish lol - "It’s a very quick ball that can be tricked when you run faster, the ball could split from its normal line."
And looks like Ronnie grabbed the fan's award for POY:Cristiano Ronaldo has been voted Manchester United's Player of the Year by the club's supporters.
The 19-year-old Portugal international won the majority of the votes in a special poll run by MUTV, beating American 'keeper Tim Howard into second place. Ronaldo has just ended an impressive first season at Old Trafford having caught the eye with a series of scintillating displays. Things reached a peak with a match-winning performance against Millwall in the FA Cup Final but the teenager feels there will be more to come.
"I want to be one of the best players around in two or three years time. I would be very proud one day to be held in the same esteem as Best or Beckham. It's what I'm working hard towards. I'm learning from, and listening to the opinions of those who have been there and done it, won leagues and cups. Next season will be even better and over the years I hope I can improve and become more important to the team," he said.
Ronaldo, featured in 40 of United's first team games in all competitions during his first season has the chance to capture more headlines this summer as his country stages Euro 2004Wow - talk about two fantastic buys last Summer... let's hope Al can do the same this year!

Riiigght - so which trick is that? The behind the leg cross? The stepover? The feint? Which trick exactly are you referring to?
He was refering to the trick where Ashley Cole does a split because he thought he had Ronaldo figured out and then tried to go 3 or 4 directions at the same time... IIRC he missed a game after that... would have been one of the first dribble inflicted injuries... lol...

portugal 1 - 2 greece
ronaldo came on for the second half and was played on the wide left!
lost the ball in midfield, tracked back and conceded a penalty which the greeks converted for their second goal.
scored a header from a corner on 93 mins.
looked very out of place on the left flank and on the portugese team.
put in alot of crosses to the right post with no on there for his delivery.
any comments?

I know someone else said it to you in the other forum - so this really isn't "for" you, per se; it's for the newbies. We've had lots of new folks join in the past few weeks it seems so here goes:
PLEASE DO NOT POST RESULTS IN THREADS WITHOUT ONE OF TWO THINGS:
#1 - The thread title has the (a) game, and an (b) [R] in the title such as "Portugal vs Greece - Post-match thread [R]"
#2 - putting the result thingy in - I can't remember how to do it; maybe someone else can post it?
