United eye pot of £25 million at end of Europe's rainbow (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,291-797993,00.html) A jackpot of up to £25 million would await Manchester United if the Barclaycard Premiership holders were to go all the way to the final and be crowned European champions. The booty that would be awarded to Arsenal, Chelsea, Celtic and Rangers would be proportionately less according to their domestic and European track records.
While a weakness in media markets on continental Europe has depressed the prize-money available to Italian, German, French and Spanish clubs, an increase in the annual value of the TV deal in the UK has enlarged its “market pool” pot. The five participating British clubs can expect to earn a large proportion of the SwFr303 million (about £136 million) to be split this season according to the size of each club’s domestic TV market.
Uefa said that it had allocated a further SwFr320 million (about £143.7 million) to be distributed to the 32 competing teams through starting fees, group-stage and knock-out fees and performance bonuses. The formula used is expected to be similar to last season, which awarded a SwFr500,000 (about £226,000) starting bonus to each team, a SwFr500,000 fee for each group match played, a SwFr500,000 bonus for a win and SwFr250,000 for a draw.
United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Rangers and Celtic, therefore, could expect to earn, at worst, £2.5 million and, at best, £3.8 million from the group stage. Each club would compound this extra income through gate receipts and merchandising. Chelski don't need the money. They have billions from their sugar daddy. :D

Don't we all... I reckon we should try out a UK & NI squad at the next olympic games just for a laugh. Not that Scotland or NI have any players that would get into the squad... and come to think of it, the only Welsh ones that would would be Giggs and possibly Hartson/Bellamy. But mm, England could have a left side again! Maybe England could stop playing like Liverpool and actually play real football again?
God help us if the overated donkey that is Emile Heskey starts for the rest of our Euro 2004 qualifiers =/

This makes me think, the West Indies should have a joint team... NO pun intended... Trinidad and Jamaica would dominate the team but i think it would be a good idea, i mean T&T's population is just 1.2 million... neway, Giggs could never play with England, it would mean Beckham is not the best side half on the team, and we cant have that now can we!

If London win the Olympic bid for 2012 then it has been said that a Great Britain team would be aloud

Never happen thank god. We have a unique position with FIFA votes - England, Scotland, Whales and NI. We are the oldest football nations in the world. FIFA has already said UK team Britain one vote one team - no England, Scotand, Wales or NI teams.
Anyway footy should not be in the olympics. Footy is bigger.

Seems like SAF was trying to bring in a defender before the close of the transfer window. Excerpts (http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/sport/football/manchesterunited/stories/Detail_LinkStory=66618.html):
SIR Alex Ferguson will walk a four-month defensive tightrope now the transfer window has shut........... While United publicly claimed there'd be no incoming activity in the final days of the buying season, the Reds were active over the weekend trying to bring in Borussia Dortmund defender Christoph Metzelder. The 22-year-old has revealed that United and Real Madrid came in with late bids to lure him away from the Bundesliga.....
..... The Reds and Real were hoping bids of around £12m might convince Dortmund to do late business............ United saw a late opportunity to nip in for the defender, who played seven times for Germany in the 2002 World Cup finals, when Dortmund missed out on the Champions League group section last week. They were knocked out of the qualifiers by Club Brugge costing the 2002 Bundesliga champions around £10m.....
..... Fergie's efforts to nab Metzelder at the 11th hour suggests the Reds' boss remains concerned that his senior defensive department is not strong enough........... They have five recognised first team defenders in Rio Ferdinand, John O'Shea, Mikael Silvestre, Gary and Phil Neville. While Roy Keane, Quinton Fortune and Eric Djemba Djemba can be drafted into the back line. Already Keane and Fortune have needed to be moved back this term to fill in.
Ferdinand has missed United's last two matches against Wolves and Southampton which has emphasised how stretched the department is although the title winners have still only conceded two goals in their four-game Premiership start.
Now Fergie will face an anxious time until the January transfer window opens or Brown returns in mid-season. When the transfer window opens again in January, my concern is that Real will make a real serious offer for this kid because they are really thin in the back. And of course, there's always Chelski's billion$$$$$ lurking in the shadows. :(

I still think our defence is strong enough with the emergency cover we have to stay near the top until January.

Trust Fergie says Robbo (http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/sport/football/manchesterunited/stories/Detail_LinkStory=66696.html) BRYAN Robson believes United still have the artists to create a successful picture for the Reds this season.
Critics and some fans have begun to get into manager Sir Alex Ferguson's ribs over the creative element of the midfield.
Fergie sold David Beckham and Seba Veron during the summer and with it shipped out a huge chunk of United's engine room invention.
The argument forming is that United's replacements for the £40m departures don't have the ingenuity to provide the Reds with a spark. Injury to Paul Scholes, sidelined for a month with hernia trouble, has added to the concern........... However, midfield legend Robson defends United's new boys and also calls for others to fill the void. "I don't think there is a problem in midfield anyway," he told M.E.N. Sport.

MANCHESTER (Reuters) - Manchester United and Norway striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is to undergo a knee operation later on Tuesday.
"It is something we have tried to correct over the last few weeks but it is important Ole now has this operation so he can concentrate on the rest of the season," United said on their official website.
"Ole will be assessed after the operation to determine how long he will be out for."

from Rednews.co.uk:
"He (Scholes) has done some training this week, he has settled down but it will be an important week in that if he feels it again then we are going to have to make a decision. There would be no point in him carrying on but if he comes through, then we'll get him in the team right away. We have Stuttgart coming along and it would be a great time for him coming back. He hasn't trained since he came off in the game against Wolves. We gave him two or three days rest after that game but he came in the following week for treatment and rehabilitation and went to see the specialist a couple of times."

United will soon release their end of fiscal year results, the news is expected to be bright:
'They will be an excellent set of results,' said one analyst.
'This is a football club with a ground that's complete, a squad that continues to grow and deliver and there is no debt... that puts them head and shoulders above all the others.'
United have also significantly reduced their wage bill with the departures of Becks, Veron and Blanc.
Also, add in that our share price is at or near the all time high.
Manchester United is estimated currently to be worth £500 million.
