Save Convey
29 Aug 2003, 05:59 PM
Here in the uk we are running a campaign to get conveys work permit over turned. We have already got a major newspaper to print a story and the chairman of spurs to come out and surport our campain. If you want the MLS to get noticed then the big american stars have to come over here. If u want to help then please email the Uk based press adresses below saying why you thing convey not getting a work permit is unjust. Hes got 17 caps for a start compared to Howards 3, we feel it was just the smaller club getting a raw deal.

Here are some ppl you may wish to send emails to:

Well I respect what you're doing but I'm just going to come right out and say it's a very bad idea.

Firstly Convey was in no way a clear cut case for a Work Permit. He currently does not meet the games criteria, and there's a strong enough argument to say that he didn't meet the second criteria of being someone who is of the highest calibre and would make an immediate impact.

Making the Tottenham first XI straight away is not enough to get a work permit, it has to be proven that they are not only capable to do the job, but able to do it to a higher standard than is available. I'm not convinced that Convey at left wingback (which is the place he would almost certainly have been used) was going to set the Premiership alight straight away, or within the first couple of months. You can argue that Howard had less caps, but he had more quality.

Secondly, launching a campaign like this has negative consequences. We already have a rough relationship with the media, which has only just started to improve this season. Why ruin all that good work but coming off yet again as a bunch of whingers? If Convey was a genuinely first choice US player, like Landon Donovan, then fair enough we have every right to complain. But for a guy on the bubble of the National team and who isn't near his full potential (if he ever reaches it).... this is crazy. It's setting us up to get egg on our faces and you should always choose your battles carefully.

I'm afraid I do not agree with you on this one sendorange. It truly reaks of BS.

Apparently Levy feels that it was quite unjust as well:

Keep those emails coming.

That's easy to say now that he's proven himself in the EPL, but most were not saying it before he got the chance.

Convey deserved the same chance.

Save Convey? He doesn't need any "saving". Bobby should now concentrate on either finding another "Class A" club or return to MLS and keep working on his game. He's still very young so there's still time for him to find his stride.

It's up to the citizens of the UK (actually, those with the power to change the rules, but OK) to decide whether those rules should be changed or not, not those of us outside their jurisdiction who may be fans of one player. Even if it's with Tim Howard, I'll still say the same thing. We can't have a situation where foreign nationals start dictating how MLS should run its business (even if you believe MLS needs to change).

How is it dictating anything to express an opinion that something is unfair?

That's a part of logical, intelligent discourse around the world.

Dictating would be: "We believe that what you did to Convey was unfair, now change it or we (insert your catastrophic scenario here)."

People express their opinion about MLS all the time. Guess what? Some of it is valid and deserves to be considered.

The Work Permit is not there to give someone a chance to see if they can make it or not. It's meant as a rubber stamp for someone who is proven top quality and is going to make an immediate impact.

Unfortunately Convey is not yet in that position. Whenever I've watched him play for the US or (a few times) in an MLS game on TV, or seen people evaluate him, it's always been about "potential", not yet proven quality.

When he's got a serious place in the full strength US first XI, or is a contender for MVP in the MLS, then he'll breeze through it. But it's too soon for Convey, he needs to prove himself. He needs at least another year.

FWIW, I don't believe the WP was turned out with great emphasis. I believe it was turned down and Convey just fell short. It was always going to be border line, and we just assumed he would come out on top. He didn't. I'm dissapointed. But not enough to start/join an e-mail campaingn.

Bobby can reapply in 12 months. Untill then he has something to prove. DC will welcome Bobby back with open arms (he never really was gone). If Spurs want him back, he'll have more Nat's time under his belt and more time in MLS to kick a little arse.

Yep, exactly :)

Judging from the Qu Bo case, I'm sure the management will keep an eye on Convey and make a move for him again next summer when they'll have an even more compelling case.

Apparently Sir Bobby Robson also wrote a letter on Convey's behalf.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/sports/20030830-120209-7423r.htm

Pity, as I guess the opinions of two former England managers (Hoddle and Robson), the US manager who reached the final 8 of the World Cup and managed to get his team ranked in the top 10 in FIFA's rankings (Arena) aren't astute judges of Convey's footballing talent. You can make the argument that Hoddle and Arena were interested parties, but you can't really make that argument about Robson. Interestingly, DC United has played 4 EPL teams (beating Newcastle, Tottenham and Blackburn while tying Leeds) and the coaches that have seen Convey play in person have been universally impressed. But then again, what the heck do Premiership coaches know anyway ... it's the idle fan that has the real knowledge. ;)
