Portugal look a bit too similar to how they did in the WC 06 and Euro 04. Same strengths in attacking midfield, but still the same weakness at forward and they let the other team create chances a bit too much still. Will be very interesting to see how they do against Germany or Croatia, should be able to beat both in this form though imo then it's a case of keeping their discipline in the final and finishing their chances when they come.

Turkey did as well as they could I thought, kept patient and organised but just lacking that bit of quality up front to trouble Portugal. I'd back them against the Czechs and Swiss though.

World Cup '06, Group stage: Portugal loses to Mexico, waits to second half to start defeating Iran, whoever else was in that group, obviously Portugal defeated to advance and I think the game with Mexico was the last one.

I thought from the beginning, they, Portugal displayed confidence and sometimes, a team will beat another and we just don't know, the loser could be a lot better than the way it appears.

But it was a confidence that I hadn't really seen them display before.

Turkey did lose their opener in the '02 World Cup and went on to finish 3rd.

Even if that opening loss was to Brazil.

Portugal went undefeated in the group stage in WC '06. Beat Angola 1-0, Mexico 2-1 and Iran 2-0.

We beat Mexico with our subs in a game we didn't need to win and Mexico did.

Portugal was good, but not superior. They still lack a target man, and won't make it past the next round.

I hate nationalist bragging but please... Portugal dominated during the 90 minutes and played a hell of a game. If a team playing like Portugal won´t make it past the round who will?

LOL.........how did the heck they get Pepe from that name, anyways??? :)

It's not from his name... he was a bit chubby at childhood, so ppl called him "pepinho" = little chubby. When he grew taller, "little" wasnt good enough anymore. He didnt like "pepão" ;) so they decided it should be only... Pepe.

Press isn't always right, as mentioned the BBC said "Stylish Portugal", www.gazzetta.it (who now has news in English too, new to me) had "Portugallo Bello", needs little translation and the game was on the front of Lequipe.fr too.

So, yes, they might not do that to everyone, they did not win their qualifying group (and maybe a World Cup hangover a lot of teams suffered) and were troubled in fact, in the group. But I think it was a sprightly performance.

They now are unbeaten in 12 competitive games riding a crest.

It seems like the player who scored the goal against Holland was not on the team, I can't remember his name, it begins with M, Miaga or something.

Portugal played as well as the majority of us expected. They had not any problems with Turkey, and we (the Turks) should be happy to got away with only 2 goals from the opponent.

Indeed, our team disappointed me. We did not expect to win, but we did not expect to disgrace ourselves. Our attacking players (especially Tuncay!) just could not get into the team.
The only players that satisfied me were GK Volkan (remember how he saved CRonaldos free kick), Altintop (he made Ronaldo look passive) and Colin Kazim Richards, he was the only one who at least tried to make some action.
Tuncay, Aurelio and Mevlüt really disappointed me. :(

If we play at the same level against switzerland as we did against portugal, we wont even be able to reach a draw.

Maniche from Inter Milan, was our best player the past two tournaments wasnt called..along with Manuel Fernandes( superb youngster from valencia) and antunes(roma) they were probably the three glaring omissions from our squad.

the formation, selection and subs were shit from terim

where the ******** is onder, sahin and toraman. zan is shit. i think hamit should not be playing right back and i guess there is nothing he can do about left back. also aurellio is shit with the national team the past few months.

i dont think emre should get captain either. why wasnt arda or gokdeniz used?

I think Turkey played a conservative game because it was the Group Favourites; expect stronger squads against the Czechs and the Swiss, imo.

Coach dont want to use Sukur because of coach system....
4-3-3
Altintop-Mevlut,,, coach choice Mevlut...Mevlut recently in good form at France League One.... I gues thats why he choice Mevlut...

Hamit use to plat at rightback in Qualify games for Turkey,,sometime he played at right midfield.
After Hamit sign to Bayern he played at right wing at Bayern,, and Hamit performed his true potential,an amazing season he had with Bayern.
Everyone expected for NT coach let him play at right wing, but what we saw versus Portugal was Right Back position of Hamit.
phycialy Hamit very strong player and very versalite style of player, there for coach want him to use at rigth back versus speedy Portugal wings.
And, Hamit did well in that position but it stop his attacking potential at entire game.... I hope coach let him play at upfront more free roll.

Hamit not a right back player to me. He is world class player at offansive area. powerful shots, versalite footballing, good pressure, runs a lot, play with mind, over all; He is total midfielder. I hope he start next game at midfield.

Yeah mate.

Everyone wants Arda Turan...
He is an amazing talent.joy to watch... sad to see Coach dont used him versus Portugal...:(

He is a diamond of Turkish football,,I believe he will show his potential in next game, if coach let him play insteed try to adventure of with some other players:mad::o

I hope coach use Arda ,Gokdeniz, Ugur; at next game as a starter.

Although happy with the win, I think it's pretty clear that Portugal left the Turks quite a few chances to score and if Turkey had some players with some actual natural ball skills and finishing ability the score would have been very different. Portugal can't make those sloppy mistakes or give attackers a meter of space against any of their future opponents because they won't miss.

How are Fernandes and Antunes glaring omissions when between the two of them they have 1 Full International friendly played?
