Unfortunately todays match was almost completely flooded out. The pathways leading into the stands were in fact flooded, to the point where my entire foot was submerged under water. The match was listed at 2pm, when actually a mini-concert started, which was played so loudly that I had to go to the opposite end of the stadium for an hour before the match began.
As the match started the rain began pouring down harder and harder. The Impact carried the play, but what would become a theme throughout the game, they failed in the final third to really test Vancouver's keeper.
At kickoff there were only a few empty seats visible, the match was listed as sold out, and my guess is that the empty seats were for people staying home. The monsoon however succeeded in driving nearly the entire crowd out by half time. Other than the side of the stadium which is half covered by a roof, there were probably less than 500 people remaining in the open. Which is a pity however, because about ten minutes into the second half, the sun come out and the rain was replaced by a chilling wind.
I left the match so utterly soaked and cold that my fingers lacked full movement. The match itself wasn't as boring as the 0-0 score would indicate. Both teams had their share of possession and often strung together several good strings of passes. Unfortunately neither team could finish, whether on breakaways or open headers and a penalty in the 88th minute was called back because the play was offside.
All in all the stadium looked beautiful and I am looking forward to next week's match not being soured by a miniature hurricane.
