View Full Version : Ashcroft Taking Fire From GOP

My guess is - GOP hates losing the source of power - the White House.
They are thinking about 2004 election already.
Ashcroft is Achillie's heel to them apparently, and they know it.

"(Ashcroft) warned that those who want to restrict the law "would tip off the terrorists that we're on to them."
Jesus H. Christ on a Yugoslavian water buffalo.
Words simply fail me.
If he seriously believes that terrorists pay attention to the Congressional Record to figure out whether Americans are after them or not, he shouldn't even be handling his own checking account, let alone be Attorney General.

Ashcroft needs to get lost on the way home and wake up in downtown Skopje for all of our sakes'.

I guess it'll take another 9-11 (maybe with tens of thousands of deaths) for people to worry about terrorism again.

So Ashcroft is too conservative for the GOP? Isn't that like that guy who got kicked out of Guns N Roses for using too many drugs?

Or Dave Mustaine kicked out of Metallica for drinking too much?

???
Can we worry about terrorism and civil liberties at the same time?

Before 9-11 and, thus, before the Patriot Act, we had enough information on the plot that Ashcroft quit using commercial airlines (sorry, someone else is going to have to provide the link for backup on this).
I guess his attitude was very reminiscent of Marie Antoinette: "Let them eat airline food."
That quote I provided doesn't trouble you, Ben? It either indicates that Ashcroft is a lying demagogue or that he would lose an IQ contest to a donut. Don't you think the Attorney General of the United States of America should be a little bit better than either scenario?

Aside from Ashcroft, it appears that we're becoming dangerously complacent.
Ashcroft worries me greatly, but just slightly less than the next terrorist attack. If there's another (really big) one, we'll get something infinitely worse than the "Patriot Act."

What evidence do you have for this assertion?

Maybe if we did something to prevent terrorism and stop "nation building" of defenseless countries in the middle east, people would not spend thier lives being afraid.

Thanks, obie.
Before I leave for the day, I'm going to ask Ben one question: Given that terrorism is still a threat, wouldn't the fight against terrorism be helped by someone who isn't either a dangerous demagogue or completely stupid?
I mean, you would think that the fight against terrorism should have intelligent people who love this country's freedoms leading the effort, no? It only seems like it'd be a little more effective strategy than what we've got now.

Isnt this a bit simplistic? Why does this always come down to Ashcroft "hating our freedoms"..?
As if the government is suddenly going to start tapping the phones of your local dime-bag pot dealers and escorts services and making petty arrests.. they have bigger fish to fry. Get over it guys..
People forget to realise that these terrorists are quite a crafty bunch of individuals that are hell bent on developing new-and-improved techniques to attack us. Many clever observers will even realise that they will attempt to take advantage of our current laws and rights and exploit them to carry out deeds..
Until we find someone that is more competent Ashcroft will have to do. I have a strong suspicion that whoever we find will be unjustly crucified in a similar manner, for the same idealistic reasons..

Yes, I think that's right. Ben from Kansas doesn't see what even the Republican party does: The kooky religious nut AG is unliked by both sides of the aisle, AND has been ineffective in his war on terror. I think this is the beginning of the Republican party easing him out so he isn't around at the time of the next election. He is too unpopular with both sides. You can't go around calling 309 members of congress turncoats because they won't fund your unpopular program and think that there will be no repercussions.

What hypocrites Metallica were. But Mustaine got his revenge by maintaining good quaility with his band through the '90s while Metallica got worse and worse (their latest is horrible).
Sorry, I got off topic. :)

Let's all not forget that Ashcroft LOST TO A DEAD MAN IN MISSOURI. The voters took a look at the dead guy and then at Ashcroft and said "your'e scarier John".
But seriously, John Ashcroft is a first class nutter. I mean the guy believes that calico cats are signs of the devil (true) and reportedly has sercret service sweep hotels to make sure that no calico cats are in the hotel.
This is our Attorney General folks.

How dare you spread this slanderous filth?! I was at the Sanitaruim tour stop in Cicero and it ************ing ruled. You're one of those faux-Metallifans who pretends they're too cool for Load, Reload etc. Sure those had a different sound than Ride the Lightning or And Justice For All, but they were still good.
And how can you diss St. Anger when this a throwback to the old days? That album sounds a lot like AJFA.

Well, I'm not a hardcore Metallica fan, anymore. Puppets, Justice and the Black Album were all outstanding. However, while Load and ReLoad had their moments, they were rather mediocre, IMHO.
Now with St. Anger, they've made an attempt to go back to their thrasher sound of the '80s (which I thought was a good idea). But after several listens where I tried very hard to like it and give it a fair chance, it just did not grow on me. I found the lyrics very sub-James-standard, the riffs monotenous, the lack of any Kirk solos dissappointing, Bob Rock on bass is lost in the mix, and most of all, Lars' snare drum is absolutely intolerable. Lars' snare sounds like someone banging on a paint can with a soup ladle. It totally detracts from what few positive qualities the songs have. Lars' snare gives me the same feeling that finger nails on a chalk board does.
In the meantime, while Megadeth never reached the same heights Metallica did, they did maintain a consistent level of quality. Their last album before Mustaine's injury was outstanding.
Oh yeah, to get back to the subject of the thread -
Ashcroft sucks! :D
