The offsides rule is probably the most frustrating thing in the entire sport! I'm glad to see, though, that the referees did make the correct call. As per 11.11, which has been posted twice now, the defender has to be counted. As someone already stated, it's good to know that the people here on BS know more than most of the world commentators.

I can't see Italy getting back into this, they have the ability to score but its going to take a lot more pushing forward and if they do that the Dutch have the greater speed and will finish them on the counter.

Goal difference is often critical in the group of death as well.

Oh and Dirk Kuijt playing because of injuries was the absolute blessing in disguise for Holland!!

exactly. hands down stupidest thing foudy's ever said on camera -- which is saying a lot.

That is why when I watched football at home, I turned off the commentary.

So with the Italians down two what changes are you expecting to be made?
Cassano has to come in, Toni out. DeRossi in and switch to 4-4-2. Donadoni is a ********ing moron. Panucci also out, Grosso.

I believe an apology is in order? Clearly a legit goal by the rules of the game.

nope that goal would not stand in the epl, like many of fifa's rules they are quickly ignored by many nations

so apologise this:cool:

He didn't remove himself he was tackled, that in no way was a legit goal and the refs will undoubtedly be kicking themselves for getting it wrong. Although they won't ever admit it.

Actually, it was Buffon who made the "tackle".

Perrotta for one of the defensive midfielders seems like a good idea.

I don't think the lineup selections are Italy's problem, though - it's not like they have a lot of big stars on their bench. Without Cannavaro and Nesta, their defense is a shadow of its former self.

By his own keeper. So no foul. And when I say "remove himself" I mean without the referees permission.

The closest thing you could say is it was unsporting for the dutch not to kick it out, or the referee should have recognized the player down and stopped play, but neither were enough to invalidate the goal, as both are judgment calls.

cassano's a head case, but it may be a necessary gamble.

Seems like they have decided not to change anything so far.

Now everyone will always remember Liverpool/AC Milan in Instanbul: and teams don't give up: it'll be hard, but if they'd gotten the 3rd that would have sealed it, I believe.

Van Basten majorily messed up with not playing Ruud more in the last World Cup, he got Holland's last goal of World Cup 2006 in the second game, and if he played against Portugal it was as a real late substitute. He's got a nose for the goal.

Would it have been any less harsh if he'd just fallen on the end line?

I just think its harsh to be classed as the offsde line when your in row g seat 224 :D

I can't believe they're saying that putting your hand up and giving up on the play is the right thign to do. That's terrible defending. Even little kids know you play until the whistle.

That's Julie Foudy for you.

Actually, it was Buffon who made the "tackle".

After hearing some posters I am now going to change my tune about weather it was offside or not. I always heard that if a player removed himself prior to a goal then he would still count as the last player, but I also heard if the player was out of the play injured or held out he would not count.

Here I was thinking because he was down well before the pass do to a collision he would be counted as an injured player or at least not one purposely trying to put a player offside by leaving the field.

Buffon collided with him and no Dutch player was involved and if the rules state that the player can only be removed from the play by the ref then I would agree it was a legit goal.

I believe that he didn't play at all against Portugal, and that Venegoor of Hesselink (!) came on as a late substitute in that game - one of the dumbest moves I've ever seen from a national team coach.
