actually he was well out of the field way before the pass, Ruud was very much offside.

That doesn't matter unless he was allowed to leave the field by the referee, such as to receive attention for an injury. I don't have video, but you can't magically make someone up the field offsides by stepping over the line. And yes, I'm a certified ref.

A defensive player cannot remove hismelf from a play by going behind the end line. He counts, and Ruud was onside, and the goal was the correct call.

Thats was the first phase of play though, in the second phase Van Nistelrooy is active and the defender is classed as off the field as he slided off it. Therefore the goal is offside

If a player exits the field during the normal course of play (ie not for an injury or something like that), he must still be considered when determining offside. A player cannot just step over the goal line in order to magically make someone be in an offside position. Thus, for consistency's sake, if someone is carried across the goal like like just prior to HOlland's first goal, they must still be considered in the offside decision.

It was the correct call, but not a particularly intuitive one.

i can't believe the first goal hasnt been clearly explained. either it is or isn't there shouldnt be a middle ground here.

Looks like Italy is the weakest team in this group. Who knew.

I think France or Romania would take that title after today's matches.

See, this is what your not getting. He is not classed off the field unless recognized as such by the referee. He wasnt, therefore has to be counted in regards to offside.

You know that explanation makes sense to me otherwise players would exploit that more often especially during corner kicks when players on the post.

Could you class it as a normal course of play though, he slid off the field through momentum. Football requires common sense and that is offside to those that have played the game and understand it.

italy seems K.O. first goal was clearly offside. Holland can continue to score on the counter-attack and that may result in a major upset for the italians.

Camoranesi had a great opportunity there and he totally squandered that

Hmm... Been playing and watching the game for over 20 years now and wasn't aware of this.. I thought that if an attacker steps off the field, he is no longer offside. Therefore, I assumed that the same rules also applied to the defending team. Anyhoo.. interesting, makes sense though... my apologies to code1390 for my original reaction to his post then. Seems like it's not so clear cut.

Game of the tournament so far I say. Mind you, not like there's much competition so far.

Using that logic players could just hold players behind the goal line meaning strikers are never offside in set pieces.

You cant just walk off the field to make a player offside but when a player leaves the field not through choice common sense should prevale and offside should be given.

it seems like the rule is clear, but it also seems like a ref could make a judgment call if a defender is laid out beyond the endline.

Which just goes to show that offside is a poorly understood rule. This is not the first time Ive seen that situation arise, and it is absolutely correct, by the book call by the referee.

The commentator on german TV immediately explained the rule and said that it wasn't offside. I Guess, you guys just don't have any reliable commentators. ;-D

They both had solid defences. Netherlands is opening Italy's too easily.

The Dutch couldn't open Romania's defense in the quals.

If Italy keeps playing like this, they'll be out 0-3-0.
