Holland were ridiculously short on goals in that campaign...what was the most goals scored in a match? Two I'd guess?

90% of all qualifying games we've played under Van Basten's leadership.
Are you seriously saying Holland did not deserve to win against Luxembourg, Belarus, Albania and Slovenia? I can't judge that as I haven't watched these games. You might be in a bit of trouble then....

Yes that is what i am seriously saying. Check our goal difference in the last qualifying campaign.

But like I said, even when we were extremely rubbish, there was always the individual class of one player to save the day.
Oh and Van Basten has completely changed the tactics in recent months btw. We're no longer playing a 4-3-3, the whole team now evolves around Sneijder's free role. Which led us easily past Croatia recently.

how can you beat a team like luxembourg only 1-0? I remember the san marino game and the crowd were whistling because it was 0-0 at half time but we scored 6 in the second half.
Are we just spoilt? No I don't think so. In this case I think it's that Holland were just...that off the pace.

Funny that. I (and Franz Beckenbauer :D) have said years ago that the pseudo-religious obsession with a 433 is a problem (though that was for different reasons back then). Glad MvB has finally seen the light!
Talking of individual class, do you feel Holland deserved the draw with Germany in Euro 2004? Although I tend to be quite critical of the German team, that was one game where I thought Germany had the upper hand. Until RvN's individual class struck.

Don't know why but my early predictions were that Italy was going to be the big fatality of the group and Holland was going to at least get to the semi finals!

How does Germany only manage to get a draw against Cyprus?

I still think that 4-3-3 is the best system in football IF you've got the players for it. It's also part of the Dutch football identity so I can sort of understand that Van Basten initially wanted to play that way. He just stuck with it too long. I also don't think it's a very good idea for German pundits to comment on Dutch football by the way, especially not if you're Beckenbauer. The Dutch stay well clear of that these days in any case.
Yes Germany had the upper hand in that game but after Ruud scored we still could have won it as the Germans started to panic a bit.

Hehe. Long answer beginning with how much better Cyprus is at home than away and that they beat Ireland and many other countries at home etc.
Short answer: They totally ********ed it up. :)

The answer is that everybody fecks up once in a while, even Germany. We at least managed to beat Luxembourg, even when it was just 1-0.

I'm cracking up over how negative everyone is about their own NT. Let's ask the Romanians, they're bound to be more positive than us!

Defensively we have been very tight in qualifying. I think if we can hold strong at the back, and with a 5 man midfield we might be able to defend well and squeak in a goal. We clearly have more game-breakers, but Italy do not suit our style as mentioned above. I will be satisified with a draw.

cyprus are a class above luxembourg (aren't they?)

But we beat Luxembourg and you didn't beat Cyprus. Like I said, even big football nations screw up once in a while. It happens. Whoever screws up the least will win Euro 2008, it's that simple really.
Funniest game ever.
