It's not a "country of his ancestors". He was born in Poland, so Poland is HIS country as much as Germany is. But that doesn't matter. Germany deserved to win. The defense was well organized, and the attacks, wheter counter or positional, were always dangerous. Really, the German team once again looked like a well oiled machine, and it's hard not to feel that they will win it all at the end. Even though Poland had better possession and more shots

I think you mean better possession stats, because possession quality itself was in germany's favour by quite a way.

Sorry about the result bmike...but judging by croatia's performance (ie. what I've heard of it) today you have a good chance of getting through.

I am pretty sure Germany will get a point against croatia (if possibly not a win) which, provided poland beats austria, leaves poland's game with croatia as a playoff...

exactly borussia...it depends on how a person feels.

I was born in sri lanka and spent 2 years there as a baby (same as podolski's time in poland), but have grown up in a couple of countries since then and no country stands out for me in terms of a sense of belonging.

Point is that everyone is unique so who the hell is anyone to question podolski's allegiance or right to play for germany???

It might be a little diferent whent the two countries in question are so close and with a lot of history. I can imagine.

I agree. The thing is, it's a philosophical what makes you belong to any country. Is it the blood of your ancestors? The place you were born? The place you grew up in? Or just a gut-feeling?

Anyway, it has nothing to do with football, so I'd appreciate it if we could finally get beyond this bickering. Poldi and Klose play for Germany, other German born players play for other countries.

Who cares?

Get over it and do the best with what you got.

No let's get back to what we all care about: Football!

Different for people on the outside commenting on it but not for Podolski! This is what people should understand.

I was born in Poland of parents that were considered German by the various German govt's, but they decided to remain Polish. Now I live in (and have for a very long time) in the US, but I stll follow the Polish NT rather than the US team. Podolski has made it quite clear that he is a fan of the Polish NT, as long as they are not playing the Germans. So, yeah, your allegiance is a matter of personal choice, but your birth country is not. Podolski, Klose and Trochowski will always have the "stigma" of being born Polish citizens attached to them whether others like it or not.

Yes they will have the stigma but it doesn't make them ANY less legit in terms of the right to play for germany, or the feeling toward germany than per mertesacker.

" Podolski said he chose not to celebrate his goals because of his Polish roots. 'I was born in Poland. I've got a big family. It's a part of my heart,' he said."

That's absolutely ok.

Have a good night all.

Lets drop all this Poldi talk of not being a real German. Players all over the world play in different countries other than their birth places. Why dont we just start crying about italians playing in ukraine, or swedes playing in england yada yada yada it doesn't matter. Podolski chose to play for Germany, lets not make his goals a mortal sin because they are against Poland. But it is nice that he still has Poland in his heart ;)!

BTW Congrats Germany and good luck the rest of the way!
The game was great to watch, sure it wasn't as tense as 06 WC but i believe Poland played much better and sharper yet they still lost by one more goal. hehe.

Agreed. He is a German player and the Germans were better, faster, and more clinical than I expected tonight. They usually start tentative.

The German team is developing into a good team starting with the last WC. At the end of this tournament, we will know if Germany can rise to a top 5 team.

I think they already are a top 5 team...

3rd in the last WC
5th in FIFA ranking (I know, big freakin' deal)
1st to qualify fo the Euros

Sorry,

but the home-side always overperforms in World Cup. If you don't play your heart out then, than when.

They raised my eyebrows today. I don't know if it was Poland though.

I personally have Germany in my top 3 in the world.

Apart from the last 2 euros...this has never been the case.

Or maybe you meant compared to what they improve to be later on in the tournament? Either way though, there's almost never been a tentative start.

I do mean to their form either later in a game or in the tournament. German teams are usually on a linear curve -- compared to themselves.

If i remember correctly, they finished second to the Czech.

But i agree - Germany belongs to the top 5 teams currently, and they are one of the favorites for the euro title.

They did finish second to the Czechs...they were already qualified when the Czechs beat them and topped the group though.
