Who? Winnie Wynalda? I'm glad, he's an ass and he deserves it.
I think he believes that he is the American Maradona. Just like Maradona believes he owns Argentine football, he thinks he is the ultimate authority on American football and he owns the sport in the States. Built on an ego from playing in the Bundesliga and scoring the first goals for the US in WC 94 and MLS. He thinks he has the right to criticize anything and anyone that isn't to his pleasing.
Have you not heard Jim Rome?

Rome just panders to the masses. He's a closet soccer fan I suspect. :p

Not much difference from the also awful Wynalda then ;)

There is a difference between those two awful:
Winnie - I own US football, my opinion is the ultimate law
Rome just gives football a bad reputation in this country
Rome is the bigger evil.

I was at a sports bar yesterday and saw Champions League highlights (pictures of C. Ronaldo) along with Jim Rome talking. I didn't hear the audio. Did anyone catch this? I assume Rome was making fun of the sport and C. Ronaldo somehow.

I think they use the Champion's League announcing teams:

Derek Rae / Tommy Smyth

Adrian Healey / Robbie Mustoe

Studio: Janusz Michallik, Shaka Hislop, Frank LeBeouf, Jim Rome

Well, not Rome.

You hate contant use of pet phrases, but like Tommy Smyth?

"bulge of the old onion bag"
"oh, he should've buried it" (uttered every time a player doesn't find the corner of the goal on a shot from less than 30 yards away )

There are numerous others but I can't remember since I haven't heard him in a while.

I agree... Smyth adds nothing with his commentary other than pet phrases and is one of the most annoying iny book. But, I think you have his second pet phrase wrong. It isn't "oh, he should've buried it",
it is "ooooohhhhhhhh, he should've buried it". ;) This seems to be the extent of his "expert" commentary - that virtually any shot taken is by his definition a sitter.

A bit surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but today ESPN announced that they have added Sky Sports' Andy Gray (http://www.skysports.com/experts/expert/0,19790,12064,00.html) as studio pundit.

Indeed, USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/soccer/2008-05-27-usa-england-advance_N.htm) lists all four as part of the announce teams, and the print edition of USA Today noted that all games will be called from the ESPN studios in Bristol off tv monitors (aka they will not be at the venues).
I'm guessing Gray will join the studio trio you've listed.

At least sending ONE announcing team on-site would've been nice.

It would be cool to pair up Andy Gray with Bobby McMahon from FSC. The analysis would be top notch.

I guess I was wrong about the rotation break. According to his wikipedia page he was removed from commentary because he mentioned how they don't actually call the game on site. Pretty stupid reason if you ask me.

Is this confirmed by anything more substantial than a Wikipedia entry? If it's true, it's beyond stupid. It is pretty clear that they're not on site when he is in their studio twenty minues before kickoff and then doing the match commentary.

No its not even sourced but he hasn't been commentating since the incident, and I do vaguely remember him asking; "what stadium are they playing in again?"

In all honesty as stupid as it is his replacement is still pretty good.
