Mods feel free to merge this if needed, but I thought this is different than the "Fire Soehn" thread.

I believe Olsen has the qualities for an excellent coach. Players, fans, and management respect him. He's is a motivator, encourager, and not afraid to call someone out. IF he is done playing, DCU should sign him to at least an Asst. coaching position....thoughts?

You can never tell who's going to become a good coach, but I have noticed Ben talking to teammates, both when he was playing, and now, as he's working through rehab. He's very well respected, and he's DCU through and through.

Management would be crazy to let him go. I agree they should find him a spot on the coaching staff after his playing days are done, and let him see if that's what he wants to do. (He might prefer to go paint more shirts...)

Sure Ben Olsen can coach D.C. United.....

It's so easy, a caveman can do it!

My work here is done!:D

I actually bought all of Royksopp's albums from iTunes because of that GEICO commercial.

The non-remixed-for-GEICO-commercial original version of "Remind Me" has a fantastic video.

Booooo!!!!!!!!!

How can he coach if he's playing?

Acceptance is like quitting... and I'm no quitter.

back on topic

Not all great (or even GOOD) players make good coaches - There's a lot of great coaches out there who musta been rather so-so players - And not all good coaches are good at all levels of the game: Kids, Youth; high school; U-17; U-20 and U23 and full professional - Or for both Boys and Girls; Men and Women

all that said - I just want to see Ben associated with DC United for decades to come - First back as a player hopefully by August or possibly next season (its been done before) - And then associated with the team in any fashion - Coaching Staff or Management or whatever

If Olsen has the desire to be a coach, one would assume that he has taken coaching courses, like the USSF A license and the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. Does anyone know if he has any coaching licenses?

Coach Marco Etcheverry sounds more fun to me.

Did you miss everyone's qualifiers about 'if he's done playing'?

Given that Judah, Maessner, Marco and Gros have all found places within the growing youth development system at DCU, I have little worries that Ben will get the same chance if that's what he wants.

I think the fact he is a professional player and national team player defaults him to some level of licensure already -- maybe it's A, I dunno. I have no idea what courses he would have to take in addition to whatever license he would automatically start out at, though.

I'm sure someone else here can clarify this.

Perhaps I should have stated that if he's truly interested in coaching, he would have his A license. Many current MLS players already have them. As a pro, he can waive a lot of requirements and take the A course, but he's got to pass it. And not everyone does. In Europe, coaches must have a UEFA Pro License, the won't let you coach without it. Southgate got a waiver to coach Middlesbrough, but he had to pass the course.

My point is that Ben might be a good coach someday, but he's not going to replace Soehn this year.

I'd settle for him as an assistant coach. From the Behind the Badge report, he already sounded like he was miles ahead of Ashton in terms of giving the players guidance.

No, I saw that, but allowing that kind of thought in is the first step to acceptance.

First it's if... then it's when... and I'm just not emotionally ready for that ok...

OK, I understand. Kinda.

Your expenses must be really low what with not having to pay for insurance. After all, acknowledging the possibility of illness or injury...
