Home Office rejected the appeal!!!

Nothing on the Spurs site as yet. Might be the same as the Mabizela transfer, where it's actually gone through and Sky and PF say it hasn't.

Tim Howard gets on and Convey doesn't?!

How about this statement.

"The player was adjudged to be not of the highest calibre and unable to make an immediate impact on the British game".

Setting aside your own particular views of the relative merits of Howard and Convey, the question is how the f^$% did anyone in the Home Office know that Howard was any good at the time they granted his appeal? Because SAF said so? Whatever criteria they might have looked at in respect of Howard (and I don't know what they are), Convey should look about equally likely to be good (caps, youth team experience, etc.)

It seems highly unlikely to me that they spent hours and hours reviewing videotape of Howard and Convey and determined that Howard is Premier League quality and Convey isn't...

So what now?

They loan him out elsewhere in Europe? Back to MLS? Training but no playing?

Which, Nermalthecat, was the implied point i was making.

Doesn't Howard's ability to get a European passport (via Hungarian dad) give him a big edge?

Looks like another Tottenham screw-up ... I wondered about Convey's ability to get a work permit but I figured, incorrectly, that Tottenham had done its homework.

Isn't there some ruling about America and dual nationality?

A friend of ours, english mother - american father, had some real problems at Heathrow airport with her US and UK passports. It meant she wasn't allowed to fly out there, even though she had the passports.

I am surprised at this ruling on Convey.

Based on past history he should have gotten a WP. Baros got a WP being in a similar position. I think the difference could be that with Howard A- SAF is not likely to lose his job anytime soon; B- tactically, a goal keeper will always be just that. Hoddle is odds on to be first to be sacked (though I doubt it) and if tactics change, Convey (being a left sided player, may be forced to the bench. I also think it probably didn't help that Ricketts has been playing so well.

damn.

Technically, at the age of 18 or anytime after, one has declair their nationality as either US or another other country. There are loop holes around that (I know a few people who hold dual citizenship and are into their 20s and 30s).

No problem, Spur fans. We have another young left winger who meets all the qualifications for a work permit and is actually better than Convey, as he holds down the starting position on our national team (Convey is only a backup): DaMarcus Beasley.

My aunt has UK/Canadian passports, as she is a landed immigrant. Married a canadian. She is fine for travelling back. Perhaps Convey should come over on holiday and meet a UK girl and marry her :D

Spurs need to get their fingers out now before sunday and sign a left sider. Konchesky would be my pick, on loan if need be.

I'm not surprised to be honest. Impending EU status is a big edge, that's what got Baros and Howard in. I'm interested to see who sits on the so-called review panel though. So they think they know better than the club teams?

BTW to the person criticising Spurs, these processes are by now means a sure thing. If they were then we wouldn't have them, it would be an automated bureaucratic process. I think the thing that stopped Convey is that he's not ready to go immediately, that's a big sticking point, you can't get a work permit if it's felt that you're still a work in progress. Regardless of how much progress you're likely to make.

Can't say I'm too gutted, although I think it's a shame for the player and the peeps on this forum who were looking forward to seeing him sign.

that's funny - i was thinking the same exact thing about Beasley - he'd be great. i have a feeling he'd cost a bit more though. The Home Office is such an astute judge of talent - you sure they're not the Leeds management team?

So the Home Office is quality control for the clubs? That doesnt make sense. Shouldn't the clubs be allowed to do their own quality control?

Silly stuff.

To be honest I'm still a little sceptical on this rejection news...

It's only been on Planetfootball and these are the fools who said Mabizela was rejected, right before the news came through that he was accepted.

Best to wait until it's up for sure on the Official site or a club spokesperson makes an announcement.

That use to be the case, but they liberalised things a few years back. It is now possible for US citizens to hold dual citizenship so long as they do not engage in actions detrimental to the US (not sure what the exact phrasing is, but not stuff that trips up ordinary folks). It is apparently even possible for the people that chose to renounce their US citizenship based on the old rules (as described above) to apply to get it back.

Back on topic, according to the Yanks Abroad boards, Planet Football may have jumped the gun on this...

I'm pretty sure DaMarcus misses out on the 75% rule as well. He played in 0 WC qualifiers, I think 3 WC matches and 0 matches at the Confed. Cup. He's be facing the appeal process as well...

Hoddle was just on Sky Sports saying Home Office was menatlly impaired , so I guess that maks it fairly official.
