As of this moment, Austin's on top of the division (http://www.uslsoccer.com/standings/8630213.html) (though things could change between now and next Saturday). Next up the DFW Tornados (http://www.dfwtornados.org/professional/semi_pro_outdoors/semi_pro_outdoors.asp), who have yet to play a game.
By the time they get to town, though, they will have visited Laredo, so this one has everything on Austin's side. Two games under our belts, we're the home side, and DFW will have only played one game, on the road, against a (historically) very good team, just one day before they play here.
Last year, DFW finished third, and they beat the Austin Lightning both times, home and away, by one goal (1-0 in up there, 1-2 in Austin).
Hm. Got a little tidbit for the supporters. According to the roster on the USL website (http://www.uslsoccer.com/teams/2008/roster/934453.html), they have a player named Robin Johnson-Hood. Anyone know any "Robin Hood, Men in Tights" songs? Would such a song be sufficiently mocking? And would anyone in the stands get it, or is that too obscure?

OK, this weekend's games are done, and we're still up top, but tied now with Laredo (http://www.uslsoccer.com/standings/8630213.html).
As for Open Cup qualifying (http://www.usopencup.com/2008qualification/PDL/242324.html), El Paso's now effectively out of it. It would take going through all the games left to be sure, but at the very least they have long odds. I'm pretty confident that everyone else is still in the running.
I'm tempted to say that the top four on the USL standings are front runners, but with Mississippi having only played one and DFW yet to play we can't really say that.
Remember that in all standings questions, first tiebreaker is head-to-head.

Roger Miller! Damn, I can't rep you!
I'd like to meet up with folks after the game, but know almost nothing about food in that neighborhood. Especially not places that are open after 10.
Suggestions?

Wow. No-one has any suggestions for places to meet near the stadium after the game?
No wonder I avoid Round Rock;)

As promised, here’s a compilation of song and chant ideas (mostly already posted previously). Not overly inspired, but, as RW points out, if we have a core group of people doing something, we can probably get the crowd to join in. (Apologies for double-posting, but I'm putting this both here, and in the Song/Chants forum)
To that end, I’d like to propose that we assemble behind the home bench, at least 20 minutes prior to kickoff (i.e. 7:10), and figure out what we’re doing.
---------------
We should take advantage of the metal bleachers; the crowd seemed to like stomping on them.
2 or 3 people doing these together could probably get the crowd to pick it up..
stomp stomp stomp stomp
“Austin!”
stomp stomp stomp, “Austin!”
stomp
stomp
stomp stomp stomp
stomp stomp stomp stomp
“Austin!”
alternately,
stomp stomp stomp, “Austin!”,
stomp stomp stomp, “Austin!”, etc
A somewhat more original idea: when we’re about to take a free kick or goal kick, a stomp in unison with a 1 second pause, picking up pace as it progresses...
Here’s another variation, sounding kind of like the “Let’s Go Aztex.” But I like “we are” better:
“We Are Aztex.”
stomp
stomp
stomp stomp stomp
“We Are Aztex.”
stomp
stomp
stomp stomp stomp
“We Are”
stomp stomp
“Az-Tex”
stomp stomp
“We Are”
stomp stomp
“Az-Tex”
stomp stomp
These might be a harder, but maybe after a few tries others in the crowd would pick them up:
“We love you Aztex, oh yes we do.
We love you Aztex, and we’ll be true.
We love you Aztex, we do!
Oh, Aztex, we love you!”
Roll Out the Aztex,
We’ll have a barrel of fun,
Roll Out the Aztex,
We’ve got them all on the run
Just one more goal now
Then how we all will cheer
1-2-3-4-5-6-7, and the gang’s all here.
You are my Aztex, my only Aztex,
You make me happy, when skies are grey...
You’ll never know, dear
How much we love you
Please don’t take
My Aztex away.
Something to “Yellow Submarine.”
And, a proposal for a semi-official Aztex song:
Deep in the Heart of Texas
The stars at night, are big and bright,
deep in the heart of Texas,
The prairie sky is wide and high,
deep in the heart of Texas.
The sage in bloom is like perfume,
deep in the heart of Texas,
Reminds me of, the one I love,
deep in the heart of Texas.
The coyotes wail, along the trail,
deep in the heart of Texas,
The rabbits rush, around the brush,
deep in the heart of Texas.
The cowboys cry, “Ki-yip-pee-yi,”
deep in the heart of Texas,
The dogies bawl, and bawl and bawl,
deep in the heart of Texas.
PLUS, some short takes, and a few random fragments:
Miguel Gallardo’s in the goal! Hallelujah! (to “Michael Row your boat Ashore”)
(To the tune of “Guantanamera”):
“One AJ Godbolt! There’s only one AJ Godbolt!” (insert whatever player you like with the appropriate number of syllables)
(to the tune of Santa Lucia):
Miguel Gallardo, Miguel Gallardo.
Miguel Gallardo, Miguel Gallardo.
Miguel Gallardo, Miguel Gallardo.
Miguel Gallardo, Mi-guel Gallardo!
(apologies to West Ham’s Paolo DiCanio)
Who’s the bastard in black (or whatever color the ref’s wearing)!? or The (color) team sucks! are good anti-ref chants.
One-oh, Az-tex, it’s one-oh Aztex
(to the tune of Yo, yo, heave ho)
Allez, allez allez allez, allez, Aztex.
Tornadoes Blow (or something; I don’t know, but I think we need some anti-Tornado, or anti-Dallas chant.
(to the tune of “Off to see the Wizard”):
We’re off to the U.S. Open, and you’re going home.
ROSTER (ripe for other one-line ditties):
1. Miguel Gallardo GK
2. Andy Taylor Defender
3. Zack Pope Defender
4. Kieron Bernard Defender
5. Beto Papandrea Defender
6. Ezual Lewis Midfield
7. Jorge Vega Midfield
8. Marcel Uriarte Midfield
9. Edgar Alvarez * Forward
10. AJ Godbolt Midfield
11. Andres Cuero * Forward
12. Craig Hill * Goalkeeper
13. Joshua Alcala Defender
14. Carlos Vicens Midfield
15. Westley Allen Midfield
16. BJ Olonilua Forward
17. Abdiel Amador * Midfield
18. Chris Spendlove Defender
19. Jamie Scope * Defender
20. Kevin Klaus Midfield
21. Austin Da Luz * Midfield
22 Martinez, Robin M/F
23 Watson, Jamie F
24 Fraser, Beau D
25 Turney, Cameron D
26 Guadarrama, Guillermo

I don't know Round Rock too well, either, but there are a couple of okay bar/pub-type places in La Frontera, such as Hooters and Tilted Kilt. Personally, I find Hooters to be rather silly and Tilted Kilt, being a pub-like knockoff of Hooters, also pretty silly, but Tilted Kilt has been soccer-friendly the couple of times I've been there. And they have a decent beer selection. But the food sucks.

DFW lost to Laredo last night: http://pdl.uslsoccer.com/home/249229.html. So they'll be coming to Austin tonight more tired & depressed than "scrappy and determined". I hope. :D
That makes Laredo the team to beat for the U.S. Open Cup qualification. And El Paso & Houston are now out of contention: http://www.usopencup.com/2008qualification/PDL/242324.html.

Tilted Kilt is Ok but the food is horrible. Beer is alright.
If you take 620 from the stadium toward I-35 and continue over the interstate you come to old downtown Round Rock, and there are two places on Main Street, one is called the Rock Room and the other is called Junior's. This is Wilco, so they close at 12, but they ought to be OK for a few beers post-game.

Yeah, I wasn't really that excited about the Tilted Kilt. Don't really like the faux Hooters places.
Via web search, it looks to me like Juniors (http://www.juniorsgrill.com/) is the better option. They supposedly have live music, but it's not listed on their website. The Rock Room, on the other hand, clearly has a band. Not that I'm against live music (I damn well better not be, being a musician myself!), but I'm wanting to talk and not blow out my voice.
So, with no information other than those suggestions and the info online, I'm going to say that I'll be at Juniors after the game, probably about 10:30.
...OK. Did the sensible thing and called them. They have a band, outside, until 11:30, but have space inside that should be good. So, that's my suggestion. Hopefully I'll see y'all there!

Good luck tonight Aztex.
As someone not currently living in Austin, I'm wondering if there are any plans to make any video of the games available?
I noticed that El Paso has video archives of their matches. That let me get a peak at the team from all the way up here in Brooklyn.
Maybe I can catch a game when I'm down later this summer.
Go Austin!
Cheers,
Kevin

Great game tonight. After the red-card I thought maybe Dallas would get back into it, but to get two more goals with ten men was really impressive. I am really impressed with the talent on this team now. Dallas is a good team, I thought better than Houston so a great result I think.

Having seen many Austin Semi-Pro/Pro/PDL teams over the years this squad is hugely talented as compared. There were a couple of Soccadillo/Lonstar teams that had 5 to 6 really talented guys but last night I would say that we put about 9 really strong guys out there (sans Beto and Uriarte, Uriarte looked out of position and Beto just served a ton of crappy balls). I will assume the AJ was injured as I saw him in the stands.
I wasn't able to attend last week's match due to my son's first birthday but from conversation we dominated that as well. Thought the fans were good this week and it can only get better. I just hope with this talent we can get some tactics to go along with it. That being said, if we can dominate the competition this way consistently we will make the cup which means we will need tactics to compete.
Nice job to the entire Aztex organization. I heard many comments last night about how "professional" in comparison this outfit already is. Other notes...Halftime show (good job not overdone), announcer (ambiguous in response), fans (good), sound system (weak, could benefit cheers if it were loud enough to hear).

I thought the tactics were good actually. For example, adding Guadarama and Herandez, two fast attackers, a man down paid off by creating counter-attacking chances. A lot of coaches would have been tempted to replace attackers with defenders up a goal and down a man. I think Wolfgang had a reason to doubt their defense since he started the game with three forwards.

Announced attendance of 1013. I continue to be impressed with the professionalism of the Aztex organization.
I thought the announcer was a ton better than last week, in that he stuck to announcements and stayed out of cheering. He also seemed to get better as the game went on. Early on he mispronounced a few names or called a few fouls incorrectly, but by the end he had the names down and confined his foul announcements to free kick for aztex etc, much better.
Spoke with one of the players who was not dressed and he said that AJ was not injured. Not sure why he didn't dress. I'll save the rest of my commentary for STXSoccer.com and link to it when I have it posted.
Enjoyed the game though and the game day operations continue to get two big thumbs up!

Joshua Alcala has a good write-up of the game on his blog (http://web.mac.com/circlejva/Aztex_Soccer_by_JA/Blog/Entries/2008/5/18_Success_even_in_the_face_of_adversity....html).
He ends it saying "I must thank the fans once again, yall were wonderful and created another great environment to play in."

Good write-up. I am impressed by the efforts of Robin Martinez coming on in the last two games. Obviously, that goal against Houston was amazing...but as you mentioned, he assisted a goal against Dallas as well. He has made an early impact for a guy that nobody I know has even heard of before the Aztex.
I also want to say that Beto, while being less than popular with some, did well again. Miguel did not have to make many tough saves again last night. The Aztex defense has yet to concede a goal after three games...that's really impressive since they played some really good teams IMO.

To be honest, I think Wolf got lucky with his two additions. Remember his first move was to put another defender in (who should play instead of Beto) and then he replaced an outside guy because they were starting to get murdered on that wing, the last sub was simply because of injury. I like Wolf but he expects talented players to know tactics and honestly most of them "see the game" however they need that "organization" of the coach.
