I was always a fan of the basics. Start off on your stomach and have someone toss the ball at your head. Head it back with your forehead. Then move up to your knees and do the same thing but making sure that you follow through so that you have to stop yourself from hitting the ground by using your hands. Go into a situp position and meet the ball as it's coming to you. Another good drill. And lastly in a standing position. I prefer to have someone standing in front of you and have the ball tossed to both sides and over the head so you have to adust your body. Always follow through. This will get you through the basics. As you get better, start receiving crosses. A ball headed back in the direction that it came from always generates more power. Practice all the types of heading: a) for clearance, b) shooting and c) accuracy (passing and shooting). Good luck.

Hey man, long time no see. Anyways after you get all of those basics down practice with some defensive pressure to get the feel of a match situation. From throw-ins, crosses, goal kicks, lobbed passes, balls that are just booted up high, the works.

Good advice. It'll help you getting used to going TO the ball instead of waiting for it. Plus, you'll get more power out of it.

I have the same problem with my head, it is probably the weakes part of my game. My problem is, if i just practice them without pressure, not in a game situation, unless its gently tossed to me, i get scared, even though i know it doesnt hurt i usually b*tch out right before it comes.
In game type situations i get too excited and commit too early i think, because i always end up hitting the ball with the top of my head, not the forehead
Any suggestions on how to get my timing down right, in practice situations

just a little trick, try starting with a smaller sized ball. it's less intimidating and work your way up to a size 5. the big part to get past is the fear of pain. seems like you already got past that. your timing is off because you are so used to having them gently tossed to you. have someone cross them from short distances and work your way to farther out (and then higher). timing only comes with practice.

It's something that takes alot of practice. Most players who learn the game playing alot of pickup soccer or FUTSAL(like me) generally are not the best headers. But training under pressure is important, because rarely in the game do players of any position have to head the ball without fighting for it.
