View Full Version : Adobe gone wild?

I recently upgraded from a very old version of Adobe Illustrator to a new version (as part of Adobe Creative Suite 3, Design Standard). I noticed that the same file that was created in the old version becomes much bigger when saved in the new version, especially when the file is exported and saved as TIFF file. For example, I have one file that takes up 2.8 Mb and 2.3 Mb when saved as Illustrator file and TIFF file (using Mac Classic), respectively. With the new version, the numbers are 0.9 Mb and 9.4 Mb (with OS 10).
Why the difference, and is there something that I have done wrong when I saved the TIFF file?

That actually sound about right.
TIFFs are meant to be huge and hold way way way more data than an AI, or EPS or JPG or GIF or PNG. A TIFF hold millions of colours in data to a set resolution and AI or EPS files are just pure and simple vector that are the lightest kind of graphic information that exist.
There is nothing wrong with that. I'd be worried if the TIFFs were about the same size as an AI file.
At work I always end up having TIFFs that are at least 5 time larger than the original source file.

Why the big difference in file size between old and newest version of ai?

it just happens sometimes. i don't think there can be a real logical explanation sometimes for this kind of things.
But how's this…
Earlier versions of adobe did not support 16-bit images or documents. They went as far as 8-bit. Now, they do support 16-bit, meaning the amount of information (001010010101, etc…) is greater. With this gain in information, the file sizes get bigger and the files end up being more "perfect", meaning less chances of having a corrupt file, more accurate colour information and more compatibility (newer versions add extra info simply coz with more versions released, means more info needs to be added for backwards compatibility).
And like I mention earlier, I'd be worried if the TIFFs were similar in size to the source files. really. If they are bigger then everything should be fine.
