As this season draws to a close I thought I should open the summer transfer thread.
I have a feeling this might be a pretty busy summer for Werder. As we go in search of the "Borowski replacement", find a consistent striker and add more depth in midfield and defense.
Players definitely out:
Tim Borowski
Players most likely to leave the club:
Ivan Klasnic
Pierre Wome
Carlos Alberto
Players we are being linked with:
Claudio Pizarro
Lukas Podolski
Jan Schlaudraff
John Carew
Milan Baros
[B]Players coming in:
Sebastian Prodl [Strum Graz]

-I would like to know why you think Klasnic is likely to leave. They are having negotiations at the moment and you can't really tell how they are going.
-Schlaudraff has declined a move to Werder a year ago and according to Allofs that still counts. Serves him right if he would have to fight relegation next season with Hannover.
-Podolski is not (soccer)smart enough for Werders system.
-Pizarro is too expensive. no option for Werder according to Allofs.
-We are not being linked with Carew. We were about 3 years ago though.
-hottest rumoured names at the moment are Cavenaghi (Bordeaux), Renato Augusto (Flamengo) and Thiago Neves (Fluminense).
-Christian Vander will leave the club as well so we either buy a new keeper or Pellatz, Mielitz and Fickentscher move up a spot.
-Mosquera will likely be back and play for the U23 in the new 3. Liga.
-Harnik might get loaned out.

Aren't Germany and Bremen very similar? He plays well enough there.

I don't think he played all that well for Germany and besides the style between both teams isn't that similar.

He has played well for Germany. Not just goals, but he plays much better there in general play than at Bayern.
What do you mean the styles aren't that similar?

The german national team has a wider midfield that tends to service the forwards more often from the flanks. Thus the forwards aren't supposed to be included into the flow of the play as frequently as they are at Werder. They're main job is finishing. Even though that's their job at Werder as well they are more often part of the combinations in which Podolski would be pretty useless.

Lol, Podolski not good enough for Bremen, good one.

He didn't say that, he just wouldn't fit our system.

Do you even watch Germany? lol
Germany are hardly a crossing team...hardly anything comes in from the flanks by way of crosses in the air. Players like Klose and Podolski do a lot of buildup work along the ground through the middle

The wide midfielders of the national team are supposed to either chip in crosses (not necessarely high) or go 1-on-1. Werder's midfielders try to get the play closer to the goal by passing through balls and/or setting up passing combinations which involve the forwards. This type of play isn't suited for Podolski at all. Werder's attacking play is totally different to Germany's.

If Werder could get their hands on a striker of Podolski's class, they'd adapt their system to whatever makes him score most.
I didn't know that there were stuck-up Werder fans, normally they're as cool as the club itself.

If Podolski would get a deal with Werder he would be the one who'd have to adjust. Not vice versa.
I don't understand why you call my stuck-up because I don't like Podolski.

In my opinion, Podolski would be a great addition to Werder. His performances for the Germany NT proves so.
Remember, the club were interested in signing him, so surely Schaaf & co. would know what they were thinking and would have good plans in order to incorporate him into the team.
The guy has so much potential it sucks to see him warm the bench for Bayern most of the time.

Carlos Alberto
The problem is, that hardly nobody will give
a (good) transfer fee for him. He got fired in Sao Paulo
and trains seperated from the rest of the team.
Allofs and Born already travelled to Brazil to speak
with FC Sao Paulo officials to find a solution.
Furthermore they use the journey to scout some players there.

That's what the germany "wide" midfielders do too...they do combinations with Klose or Podolski and Ballack/Frings. They don't go 1-1....
Maybe there's slight differences but it's very similar to me. Anyway, this is off-topic.

i personally would love to see Podolski at Werder, and i think he would be more willing to adapt to our style of play in favor of.....STARTING 11 PLAY! lets not forget, he is unhappy at Bayern, he is the third choice striker and only sees time when klose or toni are hurt....he is a starting 11 calibre player, and i honestly think signing him would be huge. He has alot to prove now that he isnt garaunteed a starting spot...

other rumors, i remember hearing something about Werder taking a look at American star Mid Michael Bradley from Heerenveen....hes had a monster season over there and is deffinately moving this summer....hes a holding mid and right now with Frings and Baumann we dont have a spot on the starting XI for him, but they are aging very quickly.....i dont think its out of the question...

I don't remember how often I saw these useless I'm-gonna-take-the-ball-and-run-directly-into-the-defender-and-see- what-happens-while-ignoring-my-better-positioned-teammember-efforts by guys like Schweini and Poldi. Werder just doesn't play like that. Their play is a lot more altruistic. That's why Diego needed and now Özil needs time to adjust to that kind of play.

I don't think he will be sold either but you never know what kind of offers come in. Carlos recently said he had 3 loan offers from Brazil that would appeal to him. It's probably best to let him play in Brazil until his market value goes up again.

The german team doesn't do crosses. It's a short pass along the ground from the side when they get into that situation. As well, there are few 1-1s.
BUT, I agree on schweinsteiger and podolski.
I'm not trying to compare schweinsteiger or podolski to diego, and yes, those two are at the lower end (by themselves) on the intelligence scale in the team (I have always said I'd rather Borowski is a german starter), so they sometimes do what you are saying. It's only them though in the team. But they can't be survive in the german team without being aware and capable of linkups to a degree.
However, podolski won't be playing as a midfielder for werder bremen will he? That and the fact that he can get used to it, would make him a good buy.
