I was speechless when Mutu had his pen saved.

It was too bad to see that happen to him. After all he's been through and to have such cruel luck there maybe me feel for him. However, to see that kind of passion and fire in a player is always special.

I'm still trying to comprehend how Robben got that in. Good news for the Romanians is that France and Italy are so inept that they could very well lose and go through if they only lose by 2.Jaw dropping shot. WS is unbelievable as well. The way the Dutch played tonight reminds of the type of action on display in La Liga on a weekly basis ,you should get GolTV and check it out next season ( Defenses don't close down the ball like in England and it's more technical so you see amazing things on a regular basis)

The Romanians deserve to go through imo and I think MVB will run out his 2nd team as it's all ready done and dusted for them at this point.

Also the Dutch could rest players for their final game since they've got the group sewn up. They look amazing at the minute though... but can they keep this form going? Teams that fly out of the traps usually peak early and fade later on.

Looking good for Romania, France are kidding themselves if they think Ribery is the new Zidane, and Italy don't look like the World Champions. I'm sure there'll be lots of build-up to the "re-run" of the World Cup final before the final group game. Despite the fact that they already played each other twice in qualifying.

I'd be interested to see how Portugal do when they come up against a quality opponent.

Italy are completely out of ideas. Donadoni claimed he would bring a fresh attack to the Azurri and he delivered a deja vu of WC 06 with Toni playing the inept finisher again. Add to it he started off with the full AC Milan midfield who struggled to finish fifth in the scudetto this year. He has bought a ticket, one way express, straight to managing a Serie C3 club somewhere in Abruzzi...or the MLS.

In contrast freakin MVB and die Oranje have so many ideas that they can just throw them at a wall and see what sticks, and most all of them do.

But I don't see the Dutch "Throwing" the next game. They may lose playing their second string, but I do not see them losing to Romania.

I have watched Mutu this past season at Fiorentina and while he can be brilliant, he just does not have it clutch situations...he is so frustrating. I was hoping to see him do something when Dica came on to help, but meh, its Mutu in La Viola all over again...

France, well they make Italy look good. Battle of the cripples with old men and old ideas to an inconsequetial result.

Anyone else getting sick of the TV coverage showing long "Baywatch" style slo-mo replays (sometimes of the manager waving his hand on the sidelines) while the bloody game is going on?

Its really doing my head in.

I dunno, those slow-mos of Ballack getting angry reminded me of Chewbacca, and for that reason I find them pretty funny. But otherwise the non-game replays suck, yes.

David Villa are you kidding me??

That's why he's a great striker. Had a shocker for the first 91 minutes, but pops up with the killer blow. Silky smooth touch to nudge that ball inside.

Dica was useless out there. Mutu still isn't 100% physically. In a report in the Romanian press Piturca said that he wouldn't be at his best until the Dutch match. However, I just hope he can recover mentally.

Ah just give him a bump or two and he'll be fine...:D

seriously tho, he needs service. He's a very selfish player outside of the poaching and its caused so much frustration this past season. I have screamed at the TV in anguish watching him blast a shot wide while Osvaldo was roaming unmarked on the opposite post. But give him a good feeder, or someone who can put a good ball to himand only him, and he's yer man.

Spain will get beat in the quarter finals, while they a fantastic going forward their midfield is to into the cute short passes. They need to unlock a defensive team and teh shiort passes just do not cut it...or play route one football on the counter, and hope for a defensive mistake.

Russia is poopie without Arshavin; and maybe even with him as well.

Turkey: "Cechmate and Czechmate!"

Glad I decided to watch that one. Was thinking about switching over to Port/Swiss when it got to be 2-0.

That Turkey game reminded me of Feyenoord 2-3 Newcastle United from the Champs League in 2002. If Turkey went anything like as mental as we did then I'm sure they had a great night.

I'm not expecting the Austrians to get a result against Germany tonight, but it would be great if they could.

Tuesday night is looking the most interesting. Sweden and Russia having a play-off on Wednesday should be good too.

I plan on wearing my Germany gear at the Fan Zone tonight. I might not make it home alive.

God the Germans were awful today. If they weren't playing Portugal next round I'd be rooting against them.

ESPN360 can fix that, long as your ISP (and internet connection) can handle it.

So in the top half we have Portugal v. Germany and Croatia v. Turkey. I think I'll still stick with my original pick of Portugal but I'd really like to see Turkey or Croatia get there.

I just ruined my monitor spitting coffee all over it:

"Jean Alain Boumsong has come on for Nasri - who has only been on the field for 16 minutes after replacing Ribery!...."

Boumsong on for France?! sacré bleu. in the short space of five minutes Boumsong makes Toni looks mythical...but of course Toni blows it.

UPDATE:

the live blog commenter for ESPN is a Toon fan:

41 mins:
"I haven't even had time to ridicule JA Boumsong yet, and being a Newcastle fan, I'm pretty well qualified. He's toilet, believe me."
