OK kids, this is another NASL one.
Diplomats versus Aztecs in RFK in a playoff match to see who moves on. The crowd is very vocal throughout the game, much of it to taunt the amazing Cruyff. The game is physical and tight. The Diplomats have, at least, one goal denied because of an offsides call. The game goes to overtime.
Cruyff, one of the most self-centered players to ever play the game, yet, becoming more of a team player, decides he has seen enough. He gets the ball outside is own penalty box and decides to have a go at it himself.
Almost every player on the Diplomats had, at least, one shot at Cruyff. I doubt there ever was a goal where a single player beat as many players with a dribble as Cruyff did that day. The finish wasn't as remarkable as how he got there.
The Diplomats season was over. I've never heard such a quiet, solemn exit from the stadium as that day. I, myself, didn't utter a single word for a couple hours. And then I said, "Wow, what goal!"
