Possibly, anyway. Why they would mess with an already perfect movie is beyond me, but that's Hollywood for you.
The remake is currently in it's early stages (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=794&ncid=799&e=3&u=/eo/20030820/en_movies_eo/12351) (so nothing is official) and the gossip is that Burton is leaning away from Christopher Walken and Michael Keaton (you remeber him from Gung Ho) and towards casting Johnny Depp, hot on the heels of his Pirates of the Caribbean success.
Personally, I think this is an outrage.
Well, maybe outrage is a little strong as Tim Burton is a good director, especially of dark childrens fables for some reason, but I don't fancy watching Johnny Depp singing and dancing his way across the screen for 95 minutes.
Why can't they cast Robert Smith from the Cure? Think of the songs:
Boys don't cry, even when they drown in a river of chocolate.
Letter to elise, you're a spoiled brat.
Kids from Fascination Street watch too much TV.
Friday I'm a blueberry.
Just like heaven, except the angels are midgets
(only kidding, but that would make for a strange movie).

I remember the author Dahl being pissed at the original because he felt a live action version at the time was sub-standard to a cartoon version and he didn't like the some of the liberties they took with the book. I remember him wanting always insisting on a remake before he died. WOnka is a weird character to start with, but with Gene Wilder you always felt a pent up rage within everytime those annoying kids asked something stupid sort of if this were another day he throughly enjoy beating the living snot out of every one of them with his cane. On second thought that pretty much what 99% of every other adult on this planet would do.

hollywood has become like broadway - nothing original, all remakes. look for a new oscar category within the next few years - best remake.

There are very few directors who would actually do this film creative justice, but Tim Burton is probably at the top of the list. Unfortunately, I don't think people were really looking for a remake and this is just a typical Hollywood effort to make money.
But if it ends up happening, I'll see it. I love the movie and the book.
I still get freaked out when I see those oompa loompas. They scare the crap out of me. That is one disturbing movie.

My favorite lines from this movie:
"Don't just stand there! Do something!"
"Help. Police. Murder."
and....
"Mike, get away from that thing"
"Stop! Don't! Come back!"

Is there any way to merge this thread with the "Disturbing Films" thread?
Because the original late 1960's film was pretty messed up, and it can only be worse through Tim Burton's distorted looking glass...

I think it actually came out in 1972 or 73.

Obviously Depp is counting on the "stupid puppy" American public to come see it....

This idea is so wrong. I'd rather Tim Burton remake The Sound Of Music. That I'd pay to see.

I despise the current remake trend. I love the original movie. So, you'd think I hate this idea. But I don't. If they're going to do remakes, might as well remake the greats. And if they're going to Willy Wonka, might as well have the best twisted director of a generation do it.
I'm just skeptical that Johnny Depp, talented as he is, can make Wonka his own. Gene Wilder played that role perfectly. Depp's incarnation will inevitably, and unfairly, be held to the standard Wilder set. And that's an unattainable standard. .

If anybody can do it, its Depp.
