Ok - This year for me, it's been Fountains of Wayne and the Libertines. Two new cds that hit quite a nerve. What else is new that I ought a be picking up?
I'm feeling pretty nervous about that Liz Phair cd. Haven't bought it, don't know if I will.

Some recommendations:
- American Analog Set (sounds a little like Interpol fused with a melodic SonicYouth...?)
- Saloon (...sounds like Blondie fused with St Etienne..?)
- the Kills (..sounds like Karen O (yeahyeahyeahs) fused with the Strokes...?)
I usually don't make those "sounds like" comparison but in this case you need an idea to launch your imagination...

every single review of the new Liz Phair Cd has trashed it and has acused her of selling her soul and her sound to the devil. i would buy Exile in Guyville or Whitechocholatespaceegg first if you don't already have them.
Ryan Adams - "heartbreaker' if you haven't heard it (although not really new)

I think you mentioned last year that you bought Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," but were only so-so about it. Too many blips and bleeps, if I recall. I sort of felt the same way -- until I got completely addicted to it and drove my wife crazy playing it nonstop for several months. (I got better, thanks.)
So I followed that up by buying their previous disc from '99: "Summer Teeth." Now I sort of have the same problem -- love it.
I think you'll find it more accessible. It's a great album: great hooks, great rhthyms, great choruses, plus bells and strings and other cool stuff - but no static blurps or (heavy) tape manipulation. (YHF is genius, though).
Other tips:
Fruit Bats!
(see the other thread)
Calexico: Feast of Wire
Sergio Leone meets Los Lobos(including the Latin Playboys) meets Mariachi Vargas meets Fleetwood Mac (not really, but they reference Stevie Nicks in one of their songs).
Pernice Brothers: Any album.
Their latest "Yours, Mine and Ours" is great, but their previous "The World Won't End" is even better. Gorgeous brainy pop. Can't write anymore about them or I'll never stop.
Electric Six
Well, I can't really recommend them since I've only heard one song -- but I can say that I'd like to take everybody here to a gay bar, gay bar, gay bar -- Whoo! .

I'll second this one. "Danger! High Voltage" and "Dance Commander" are definitely two of the catchiest tunes I've heard in recent months.

I'm gonna have to bookmark this thread. My music collection is so out of date, it makes the Wizard's 1996 uni's look cool.
Keep em coming. I'll listen to everything, but I especially prefer blues-influenced rock-n-roll, "alt-country (whatever the hell that is), the occasional dish of rap, esp. ol' skool and basically anything that interesting.
Spare me the late '90s angst rock though. That stuff is a heaping pile of suck, IMHO.

I listened to it driving back from Columbus after the Paraguay match. Not bad. It's a bit "poppier" than I'm used to from her, but that's the direction she chose to go.

if youre a fan of retro- ish
The apples in stereo- The doscovery of the world inside of the moone.
While not new, it certianly is one of the best albums released post-2000.
They're like the beach boys but without the whole being really freaking annoying thing.
Also might want to try The Minders - Golden street
I second the nomination for "the ugly organ" by cursive.

They sound fun. Now, would I like Super Furry Animals? I'm looking for them used and wondering whether I should break down and buy them new.

Just playing around with my new broadband connection.
5 Star kick me till I'm barely human if you don't like them recommendations:-
The Sleepy Jackson - Lovers
Gillian Welch - Soul Journey
4 Star if you like the genre you'll like these but please don't hit me with anything recommendations:-
Kraftwerk - Tour De France Soundtracks (obviously a five star album, but you've got to like electronic music)
Calexico - Feast of Wire
Althlete - Vehicles and Animals
This one's in the great tradition of mockney albums by the likes of the Kinks and Blur. Although not as good as The Kinks obviously.
Tahiti 80 - Wallpaper for the Soul.
French pop/psych in the best way.
3 star you'll like a few tracks but not the hole thing so keep the pointy stick in the cupboard recommendation.
The Coral - Magic and Medicine
Pass It On is a great summer single in the merseybeat style and there's a passable Bob Dylan blues thingy in there too.
