View Full Version : Two questions for Rovers fans

Just was curious about a few Blackbur Rovers-related things.

Is there anyone from the Rovers squad that won the Premiership who is still playing pro?

Also, what's the deal with Gunnar Nielson? I saw he's a 'keeper from the Faroe Islands. There's a thread in the 'Other Countries' forum on this site that talks about full-time pros from 'minnow' leagues, and I just was wondering if Nielson is planned as Friedel's successor, or how much he's in Rovers' first-team plans.

Thanks!

I don't think anyone is still playing that was playing all that time ago.

Dunno about Gunnar Nielson. Thought he played for Arsenal - ha ha ha.

I think Shearer was the last one from our PL winning days. BTW what is he doing these days? Is he still wasting his time in the staff of NUFC?

WRT Nielsen... it would certainly appear that he may be in the running as Brad's replacement. However, isn't it Brown who has been on the bench for most -- if not all -- of this season as the backup GK? Also, most GK don't seem to hit their prime until they are in their 30s (kind of like rugby players, but I digress). And, Nielsen is rather young to be sitting in the big chair -- although he is a big strapping lad, though. I daresay he is a smart purchase with lots of potential right now, and could be a good sale elsewhere in the future. It sounds like we got him for peanuts. Afterall, it can't always be Arsenal securing the young players for future profit after all.

I truly hope that Arse is feeling foolish over letting Betns slip through their greedy fingers.

So far as Brad's eventual replacement, I would not totally discount Enckelman at this point. He is on loan to Cardiff, which could indicate the Manager's intention of getting Encky (you saw it first here at BigSoccer -- the new nickname for Enckelman) some first team playing experience and seeing if he can please at the first team level.

Furthermore, Hughes seems to send players on loan to Welsh teams when he is seriously considering them as potential for starting XI.

Fielding -- another very young player -- is also out on loan. And, the fact that he is out on loan -- whereas Nielsen is just in the squad -- may be very telling.

Very interesting questions, and it gave me alot to think about. NewSkin: I see in your profile that at this point you are only supporting U.S. teams... are you interested in pursuing Rovers as your EPL team of choice? If so, I can point you into various discussions that we have had on this forum as to why you may want to support Rovers over some of the other "Big" clubs.

Shay Given and James Beattie were both part of the squad in 94/95 but didn't play in the first team.

Yaeh Gunnar's just a promising youngster snapped up after he impressed. Supposed to be decent although it'll take a few years before he's useable. Brown is Brad's cover at the moment. Enks is getting on a bit himself so wants first team football, he's ok but not a replacement for Brad, just cover for injuries.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I also found that Chris sutton played in the Premiership until 2007, when he left Aston Villa. Looks like he may have been the last active member of the squad left.

Hang on, Ian Pearce is still playing for Fulham isn't he? He was out on loan to Southampton recently before he got injured.

I think

yeh they are the only 2. I would say rovers made a big mistake in selling given but made up for it in brad.

Another question might be who are still playing on Blackburn who were playing when they came back up?

Brad is one of those.

Dunn, though he went away and came back.
Sparky, as long as making the switch to manager counts.

Bring back Damien Duff. He was awesome in a Rovers shirt. I forgive him for desiring money - who doesn't, apart from the Dalai Lama?

However, forgiving Chelsea for poaching him...never.

I smile every time they lose.

Yeah, it's great, isn't it? I do exactly the same thing for Chelsea, ManUre, Liverpool, Newcastle, Francenal and Spurs. Ya gotta hate dem Spurs!

It's funny. Watching England first-teamers playing for their clubs, I usually want them to do well, so that they hit form just before a major tournament. Thanks to Steve (The Wanker) McLaren, I can safely hate and wish poor form upon England's finest. Thanks Steve!

This has no bearing on the Champions League, however, because I DO support all British teams in Europe...except Spurs. Ya gotta hate 'em.

That's always a weird one for me. I always try to be mature and patriotic and support all British sides ... but when certain ones, OK Manure, let a goal in and I see their reactions, I laugh and stick two fingers up at the TV. Just can't help it.

I don't have a dilema with Arsenal though, as they're as English as the French president's wife. In fact she can speak good English so probably even less so.

And back to the thread, I think that's about it isn't it? I thought Tugay but we got him when we'd won promotion.

the only one i can remember in our promotion team is brad. Didnt he make his debut in the 2-0 win at burnley near christmas time, could be wrong. The only other one was dunn but not sure you can count him as he left then came back.
