Since the Fusion are no more...I suppose we should have a new thread for the new SD United.

Does anyone know if SD United will be a completely new team, or will they basically be the Fusion, just with a new team name?

I know some of the ownership / management came over from the Fusion, I'm wondering if the players did also, or if they're starting from scratch.

There are a lot of unknowns with this team...who's the coach? who are the players? where will they play?

I guess we'll find out as we get closer to the start of the season, just thought I'd throw the questions out there in case anyone has some inside info.

Yeah, I've directed some of the same questions their way via the website, just haven't heard back. Sometimes people on here are quicker to answer if they have any light to shed on things. ;)

So, I have answers to some of my own questions...

The SD United FC NPSL team will be coached by Jason Heth.

They will play their games somewhere in East County in San Diego, at a location to be determined.

Their team roster is not yet set...I would imagine there will be tryouts, but no official word on that yet.

They really need to begin promoting the team outside of their youth organization. I would be intrested in attending a game or two...

Agreed.

I hope they will as more details get sorted out. Right now, it's like pulling teeth to find info about the team, and the small bit I have found seems to be all there is at the moment...

They must be close to finalizing some of the missing links (a roster, a stadium) since the season is rapidly approaching.

I'm hoping their publicity efforts will increase once they have something concrete to publicize.

Yeah, I assumed they were doing that since they told me the roster wasn't set yet. I don't have any more specifics than that, unfortunately. And I'm not in San Diego right now, so it's hard to do much snooping. =)

The SD United website has a ton of information about the WPSL team, but almost nothing about the men. There is info on the stadium, individual tickets, season tickets, the team shop, and a roster. I don't know if the information about the stadium, ticket prices, etc. are the same for both. Obviously the roster isn't, but there's a good chance the other stuff could be for both the WPSL and the NPSL.

I noticed in your other post (in the general NPSL thread) you said you're going to be trying out...is that with SD United? If so I'd be curious to know your impressions of the team, especially regarding your questions about the quality of the league. If it's better / worse than you expected, etc.

I didn't catch your wording the first time I read this.

No, the Fusion are still alive and well. They just aren't competeing in the NPSL this season. They may very well be back next, so please don't give up on them.

Hi! I'm back from my "tryout" for the SD United. Here are my impressions after what I saw there tonight. The SD United is basically the same players as the FUSION. The supposed tryout I went to wasnt a tryout at all because they have all the 22 players for the NPSL team. So I was a little bit thrown off. Today from what I heard was the first training session for the team. All the players were from 26-30 years old.

The level that they played what I saw was good one, nothing out of this world. Since the players had played before they seemed a bit more organized because they knew everybodys movements. I dont know why they told it was a "tryout" because it wasnt, a lot of players were thinking the same thing as I did. They are going to a state cup in san bernardino this weekend and another team from former PUMITAS players, some fusion players and some players that went to the training session. But I heard that some PUMITAS are joining the SD UNITED for the US OPEN CUP or the team don't know exactly. In the tryout we only player like 30 minutes but no one was there watching us play, the guy in charge was busy looking at the SD UNITED play.

Yeah, I realized after I wrote it that it was the wrong wording. I know the press release said they still exist and will be playing in tournaments and whatnot, just not the NPSL.

I really just meant to start the United thread since the Fusion were no longer going to be in the NPSL. Don't ask me why I didn't write what I meant, maybe I've been married too long. ;)

On the other hand, I'm still confused about what exactly has happened to the Fusion's group of players...I assumed before that they were still together as the Fusion (and that SD United would be a completely new team), but then the Fusion's coach shows up as SD United's coach, and Mangoni says that the SD United team is all of the old Fusion players...if so, then who's on the Fusion? I don't get it...

Hey, thanks for the recap on the night and impressions about the level of play. Sorry the "tryout" part was misleading.

If they really do already have their 22-man roster for the season, it would be nice if they'd put it up on the website...I'm curious to know who's' on it.

No worries. I figured asmuch but wanted to clear it up for others...

Since I am not directly related to the team, I don't know the answer. I will get with my contacts and try to find out about the "team" for us.

all the fusion players are the SD united. They just changed named. Why do I assume that? all had their training gear with the fusion logo.

No they didn't just change names. The owners of the Fusion split. Half joined forces with SD United (who were mainly a select club for youths) and had just purchased a WPSL franchise. So, in short, SD United is an expansion franchise.

As for the players, I found out they switched over to SD United as they still wanted to play in the NPSL. Those that also played on the Fusion PASL (indoor) team will still be playing for the Fusion in the winter. So the Fusion still exist even though they are unable to participte this season in the NPSL.

Right on, that makes sense. I'd want to play in a real league too. I guess this means we can look for United to be better than your run-of-the-mill "expansion" team. We can hope, anyway.

It'll be interesting to see what happens player-wise if the Fusion do re-enter the NPSL next year. I wonder if the team as a whole will just re-defect back to the Fusion, which would make SD United essentially start from scratch. Bummer to be more of an expansion team your second season than your first.

Whatever happens, I'm looking forward to some good soccer this summer.
