Round Rock Aztex. Weak. If they put the team in Round Rock I will never go. I will also try to talk everyone I meet into never going.
PLAY THE GAMES IN AUSTIN OR DON'T CALL THEM THE AUSTIN AZTEX.

I feel your frustration, but cool it a little bit there, man.
For one thing, this is the stadium announcement for the PDL/U-23 team only, and for 2008 only. Maybe they'll continue to play out there in coming years, and maybe they won't.
If you've followed some of the stadium discussions here, you'll know that there were some serious obstacles to keeping the team in Austin proper. Take House Park, for example, which seems to be somewhat of a favorite among many: it is being re-surfaced this summer (grass to artificial turf), and is therefore literally impossible to have been selected for this season. Next season, maybe the stadium will be looked at again.
And in any case, the Pro/USL-1 team's stadium for 2009 hasn't been announced at ALL yet.
Lastly, I don't see what possible excuse you could have for "trying to talk everyone you meet into never going". WTF? If you don't want to go 20 minutes up I-35 to see live soccer, that's fine. Stay home and watch TV instead, I guess. But why rant and rave against it to "everyone you meet"? You think that's going to help keep the team viable enough to last around here? Help them be successful enough to be able to actually build the kind of soccer-specific stadium we're almost afraid to dream of?
Thanks but no thanks for that kind of attitude.

My post says IF they put the team in Round rock. I hate the fact that this city puts all its marbles into UT sports. We are the largest city in America that has no Pro sports team.
I don't know when the last time you drove from central Austin to round rock for a 6:00 game, but it takes much MUCH longer than 20 minutes. more like an hour and a half. And sorry dude, that doesn't work for me.
I pay property taxes here, and I will vote any time turn turn those funds into a stadium in my backyard.

Playing in Round Rock will make it hard for soccer fans in San Antonio to attend. I will still come to some games.

LOL. This from a Gals fan? Nice. For the record, I think pretty much 100% of the Austinite fans want the team to be in Austin proper. But this is a temporary solution. Hopefully it won't last.

Regarding game time:
Sat May 10 Houston Leones 7:30 PM
Sat May 17 DFW Tornados 7:30 PM
Sun May 25 New Orleans Shell Shockers 1:00 PM
Fri June 6 El Paso Patriots 7:30 PM
Fri June 27 El Paso Patriots 7:30 PM
Sat June 28 Baton Rouge Capitals 7:30 PM
Thu July 3 Laredo Heat 7:30 PM
Sun July 6 Mississippi Brilla 7:30 PM
There are only three games being played on Th/Fri, and they're at 7:30. Now, I agree that traffic will not be a heck of a lot better. I recommend Mopac.
Second -- you could very well be one of only 30 people (I'm being generous by including everyone that posts on this board, and everyone associated directly with the Aztex) that feel that way about spending city taxes on a stadium in town. I have no idea how long you've lived here, but Austinites are notoriously stingy about things like this. It's just reality.
Third -- you want a stadium built before this season starts? Wow.
Fourth -- There are only three stadiums in Austin. House is having grass changed to artificial turf this summer. Burger Center holds 15,000 -- WAY too large for the PDL team. Nelson Field holds 10,000. A little too large, but only slightly larger than the one they chose. Not sure why they selected Round Rock over Nelson. We can only guess.
Regarding Austin being the largest city in the US without a pro sports team... I assume you mean major league.
That's an entire long discussion. I guess I'm not that upset about it. I don't see why it's that important to have a major league team. I mean, Austin's plenty well known for what we have that no-one else has. And we have the Longhorns, and the reality is that even if we did have a major league team, it would still be the second team behind any UT team. You can rant about it all you want, but it seems to me like it's a waste of energy.
Me, I'm going to be happy with what we have -- a serious owner that's going to do the best he can with the circumstances he has, and will work hard to change any circumstances that are within his control.

You haven't explained why if its the travel i Travel to stoke from Bolton a round trip of 150miles every weekend but don't slag the club off cuz off your disapproval and personal preference. Why the anger? And as for area selected how far out of Austin are you talking. And the Stoke ground isn't in Stoke its on the outskirts, The club may have gone for that choice because of an easier link to a wider audience and possible connections getting to and from the ground

Dragon Stadium is 19.5 miles from downtown according to googlemaps. Really it's just past the city's northern edge. But, I understand some of the sentiment if not the degree that he has. If the stadium were down in Buda - south of Austin. I'd support the team, but I don't think I could say I'd be at every game. Austinites are very divided geographically (north-south and east-west) so the ideal placement of the team's field is going to be difficult no matter what.

You can't please everyone, and good stadiums are not easy to come by in central austin. Besides, plenty of pro sports teams don't play in mid-town. Don't the NY Giants play in New Jersey? At least the Aztex are in the same state! I know that's a bad example but I don't feel like deleting it.
As for San Antonio fans coming to the games, I don't think that's a factor really. It won't be long before San Antonio has it's own MLS team I am sure.

Why do people here think it take 20 mins to get everywhere?
It takes longer than 20 mins to get everwhere.

I wonder if they will consider running a shuttle from the metro station. The capitol metro will run fairly close to dragon stadium but not quite close enough.

I admit that my scan was pretty quick, but I'm pretty sure there was a grand total of one person that said '20 minutes.' One does not usually constitute "people".
None of us know where you live, so we don't know how long it would take you to get to the game.
I do wonder what the problem is, repeating this point, but ignoring others that have given you a lot of counterarguments (for example, to your '6:00 game time' comment).
If you'd prefer to just be bitchy about the situation, fine, I'll stop discussing. No point in reasoning with someone that just wants to vent.
Have fun watching the Galaxy all by yourself this season!

I have to say, I was disappointed not to see fake stadium or player news yesterday. :( Of course, I didn't post anything either.

Hey, for anyone curious how the stadium works for proper football, you can get a preview next weekend at the high school state championships (Thu-Fri-Sat; http://www.uil.utexas.edu/athletics/soccer/state/bracket.html for full schedule). You southerners will have a local rooting interest: the regional final in Girls 4A is between Hays and Dripping Springs. Northerners, don't despair; Leander Vista Ridge is still alive in Boys 4A.

No, that looks like that's at the new RRISD athletic complex on Parmer, not Dragon Stadium.
