by the way American Soccer News (http://american-soccer-news.com) is hosting a poll on where the next MLS expansion city should be. Will be interesting to see how that develops (it logs IPs so you can't pad your vote).

In this interesting article there is the 2012 date for our possible dubut in MLS.
I hope that it is only a pessimistic prevision and that the most realistic date is the 2011. What is the your unbiased prevision ?

Well right now Seattle is on for '09 and Philadelphia for '10. So we'd be looking at '11 at the earliest. But the league might now want to do another northeastern city right away, especially with wide swaths of the country (particularly in the southeast) without any representation. So they might want to give Miami or St. Louis a team in 2011. On the other hand, if there is an ownership group in place with commitments to a stadium, I don't think the league would say "no" either. They might even be willing to let NYC be the second team in a given year, for example.

Ed let me ask you a question. What do you think about two teams coming into the league at the same time? Forget NYC. Just lets say two new expansion teams coming online at the same time. What do you think that the dynamics of this might be? I know it was almost a possibility with Philly and Seattle but lets say it did happen. What do you think would happen? How was it play out in terms of the Draft, SuperDraft, Senior Int'ls, Youth Academies and Dev players?

if they have owners, and the owners are willing to build SSSs then I doubt they would turn them down even if it means expanding by two teams one year. I don't know about the logistics but they'd figure that out somehow. Maybe just flip a coin or something.

Do you think that two teams would really drain the talent pool that much or do you feel it could withstand the inclusion of two teams.

the talent pool is already pretty thin. But I'm not sure that would matter. Look at Toronto. They were terrible last year and sold out every single game and led the league in attendance. This year they're expecting something like 2,000 away fans for their season opener in Columbus. The team has been an unbelievable success (just not on the field) and doesn't look like it is going to let up anytime soon.

If done right, I don't see why a U.S. city shouldn't have the same success. Yeah the team is probably going to be pretty bad for a year or two. But it's the world's most widely-played sport. Chances are you can find talented players if you search hard enough (even ones willing to play for the MLS' crummy minimum wage).
