View Full Version : What is Colombia lacking to be a World Class team?

Just wondering what people think we are missing to be 3rd in South America?
We have the 3rd best league, great youth teams, and a great current generation with the 2003 and 2005 sub 17/20s coming of age and gaining international recognition with current crop of young talent like Falcao, Renteria, Carlos Sanchez, Cristian Zapata to name a few
But what do you guys think we are missing before it was striking options but dont think we can complain about that any more. Than people bitched about the coach but think Pinto won us all over.
I think its infrustructure and seriousness between team and sponsors. Like what happening with Boyaca and losing their sponsor 2 months into the season is bullshit and our fed shouldnt allow it, and sueing players left and right for leaving is also things we need to work on. Dont think we will be at the level of Argentina any time soon but def should be exporting more than countries like Chile,Uruguay and Paragauy in my opinion

I agree, this kind of relates to the "if they were argentines?" thread....
I hope that the Copa Colombia is able to advance our youth and competition...it follows the european tradition.
I also hope that we use these talents that we have to move forward.
Guys, we have the world class talent, the world class coaches, we just need the silverware!!!

yea coaching is great looks at how our coachs are doing away from home
US sub 17 coachs are all colombian :)
Honduras NT mens
Honduras Olympic Coach
think that our 1990 WC team is making some very good coachs, and its good to see.
Think we should get rid of Lara tho because he is just picks the tallest strongest guys he can find and leaves out huge talents.... how Gio Moreno, Freddy Montero never made a team is sicking

solo se necesita continuidad y seriedad (actitud) en los jugadores!
hace 10 aņos no lo vienen diciendo los Argentinos que respetan el FPC, especialmente despues del 5-0 y de la debacle de caracteres en USA94

World class players.

There's maybe been a handful of guys that could pass like El Pibe, ever. And sadly, the game has evolved in terms of speed and physicality, to the point where we may not see another emerge that plays his style.
As Efer notes in the NT10 thread, today's and tomorrow's 10's don't and likely won't like what those we had in the past. The emergence of the pacy second striker as a primary offensive outlet (Robinho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tevez, Messi, Aguero, etc.) changes the game.
I think we need to see the talent we have, understand how best to exploit it, and develop tactics that put us in a position to win. We can win without a traditional 10, and I believe we will.

Quickly because I have to go, we need to keep young and upcoming players in our league so they can mature ( sounds ridiculous and even idealistic.......kinda unlikely but it's just me dreaming.......) and put together better teams that can compete and at the same time allow younger players sitting in the wings to develop in Reserve tournaments ( Copa Colombia). Secondly, change of attitude( from taking futbol as a past time to considering a real profession in order to "act" professionally; See: Dayro Moreno) and taking a page from Argentina and Uruguay in the "huevos" department; By huevos I mean, changing our mental state from we might win if and we the resources to win, but we're not as good .................TO I won't leave that field if I haven't spent the last drop of sweat that my body can put out and I haven't saved a sprint for a ball all game long in order to make my "TEAM" and not myself look good. Will post later as the thread evolves............

You are right but its sad to say we dont have anybody like this in Colombia...we dont have anybody tht can kick, be fast and set the pace of the game like they can...IM not saying we suck because we are far from tht but we need a mid field the one we have right now is alright but come on all we do is pass it back and no one gets open.we need a solution for this because then we are never EVER going to catch up wit Paraguay and Uruguay who are next in line wit Brazil and Argentina

We've got a couple now that I find quite promising actually.
I think Carlitos Sanchez has looked as sharp as any holding midfielder through the first four games - tidy, smart and with a good change of field cross too. Amaya has done very well beside him, but I think Edwin Valencia should be the eventual starter beside Sanchez - it'd give us one of the fastest and most athletic set of center midfielders on the continent.
From an attacking standpoint, I'd still like to see Aldo Leal get a few more games in the side - particularly, playing beside another creative midfielder (be it Grisales, Torres or Soto - if healthy. His form for Nacional in the Sudamericana last term was sizzling and I think paired with another player to prevent the doubleteams from opposing defenses he could have a big impact for us.
Up front, I love our options. We've got loads of pace, and the kind of strikers who can score and set up their partners.

Great topic. To me the answer is simple. Colombia has all the fundamentals to make it to the next level (surely as good as football as played in Argentina, man to man). But they lack concentration/commitment/INTENSITY at ALL TIMES...all of these deal with MENTAL APTITUDE.
Games that ARE TYPICAL of Colombia/Colombian footy and that have kept us from moving forward:
Friendly in 2008
URUGUAY 2 - COLOMBIA 2 - After owning the match for 80 + minutes with a 2-0 lead.
October 2007
BOLIVIA 0 - COLOMBIA 0 - With 1 man advantage for 25+ minutes, Colombia decides to take the tie home
Friendly in 2007
PERU 2 - COLOMBIA 2 - After being in the lead 2x - Peru ties the match in the last minute.
Copa America 2007
PARAGUAY 5 - COLOMBIA 0 - After dominating the 1st 30 minutes and with a penalty kick in favor, Colombia not only misses the penalty but then implodes before our eyes!
URUGUAY 3 - COLOMBIA 2 - WCQ 06 - Too painful a match to bring up! Cost us the WC berth.
America de Cali in Copa Libertadores final- 1987.
To single out some others with the same 'limting capacity':
Asprilla, Johnier Montano, Pino, JPA, Valderrama
I only mention these players, because some of these players EVEN with their self-limited capacity, had phenomenal careers. But, Asprilla retired at 31? Valderrama, blew up at 25-26 and had a limited European tour. JPA, was inconsistent in Europe. JM and Pino, were true gems but very self righteous.
The bad news is that this mentality still prevails amongst our players. The good news is that it can be improved as long as it is addressed as an issue.
A success story is a Falcao. A player that's been patient REGARDLESS of the tough cards he was dealt with injury. The Botafogo - River match in Copa Sud., shows the level a Colombian player can reach with high intensity.... can you imagine some players that are innately better then Falcao, with that type of mental aptitude!?
