We've decided to change and clarify the [R] policy just a bit. Under the old policy the [R] only referred to the match at hand. Here's the new policy.
The [R] refers to the specific match at hand and any matches that relate to it. That means that for DC United's MLS and Open Cup threads other MLS and Open Cup matches are fair game. All other threads will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
This is also now in the DCU FAQ (under "Spoilers").

Post comments and questions below.

Thanks,

I'm standing on a molehill, looking at a really large mountain, and I'm just so confused.

I think any thread with any match result or any post with a result have an "r". plenty of other matches are mentioned in threads about players, rumors etc. for example, i'd be pretty pissed off if i was avoiding a spurs match report in order to see the fsw replay and someone mentioning bobby posted the score...

though i am not big on blanket rules, this seems to me to be something best handled on a wide scale, who knows what result, no matter its relation to DCU.

This only makes sense. If you are reading these boards regarding a specific game and you do not wish to have yours "spoiled" you should know better then to go digging into threads on anything other then concessions or the current crap state of the HFS Festivals.

I don't have the shootout, so it's not really a problem for me, but I think this is a bad idea. Why the hell would anyone have to mention, for example, the NY/LA game in the DC/Chicago postgame thread? Answer me that, and I'll change my mind.

If I had the shootout, I'd probably come here to quickly discuss the DC game, then go to my DVR recording of LA/NY. I'll bet most DC fans with the shootout would do the same.

I don't like this at all. This sort of thing has happened in the England Club forum before. I was reading through one team's forum to get that team's PBP and result, only for them to give away the result of the game I was waiting to see later that day. Nope, don't like it at all.

My two cents.

If people don't want to know the scores of soccer matches, logging onto a website called BigSoccer.com is a pretty stupid idea.

Obstensibly yes that is correct. But a lot of people like to either vent their frustrations on the post game thread or share their good tidings..

I'm guilty of spoiling a result or two myself, it happens.. I think Benjamin is just taking the shackles off so no one will get grilled unmercifully about it..

Besides, talking about other teams results do have an effect on our teams standing at the moment.. I have the shootout package and I don't care one way or the other if a result is spoiled..

Look - all that's happened here is that we bowed to the reality of how the post match threads actually operate. Results from other matches are often revealed precisely because they're relevant to discussion. All we're doing is acknowledging this.

I have to side with Mike on this one. If I tape an Arsenal match in the afternoon, I'm not gonna go anywhere that might spoil the result untill I have watched it myself. That would include Sports channels, sports bars, and Big Soccer. Just my 2 cents.

On that specific issue, yes I would avoid all media outlets, but when it pertains to MLS matches, it's kind of difficult not to discuss other results..

It's easy to avoid results from other leagues because usually only one match is being shown at a certain time here in the US..

Results are spoiled in all matches during the course of a game.. It's nearly impossible not to know the results of other MLS matches going on concurrently as they either announce them live at the Stadium via scoreboard or announcement or they do it on the TV screen with updates..

We just have to live with this issue..

At the end of the season, when playoff positions are on the line, I get it.

Right now, when DC can come in first or last solely based on playing well or playing poorly, I don't get it.

Like I said, I don't have the shootout, so it's not really my problem. But I just don't believe in defining deviance down.

At the Championship Manager boards, they have the same warning/banishment system. But when someone got a yellow, the duration and reason for the card was in the left side, under the person's name. Sometimes, it would be funny as hell, as some mods would get pissed at someone and kinda sorta humiliate them.

Anyway, I, personally, think the best system would be to give someone who spoils the LA/NY game a yellow expiring next Saturday, and put "spoiler" under their name when they post.

This thread should end now. We should not get into semantics about what's an [R] and what isn't. Plain and simple, any result that has happened in the past 48 hours should be expected in any [R] thread. Whether it's the DC game result in a DC [R] thread, or an A-League result, or a freakin' J-League result, an [R] means expect results. Don't read the thread if you have games to watch.

Thx,

Jay!

Does this thread really exist?

If you don't want to know the result in another MLS match, don't log on to BigSoccer.com for chrissakes.

Surely there are other things to occupy your life than this silly little website. If this is your only social outlet I recommend throwing your computer out the window.

Chelsea, huh?

How would you like it if when Chelsea is playing the 12noon game on FSW, somebody dropped a Chelsea score into the Bobby Convey/THFC thread? In fact, I think I'll make it my personal mission to spoil every Chelsea game in the Convey threads.

Dude, chill. Have a cold one or something. You know, this whole thread is nothing but a vast right wing conspiracy created by Knave to spoil matches. ;)

Back in the old days when I did political work I was actually more of a left wing kind of guy. But conspiracy? Yes. And vast indeed. :)

Holy ************! LA just beat New York and we're only a point out of first!

Since New York beat the Galaxy and we won, no one has a better record in the last ten matches than us.
