i don't know if there's another thread for this, but since there's a bunch of new teams starting up, i thought it might be a good idea. post whatever we've already got, and any new ideas you may have.

for philly, something to do with ben franklin having syphilis

for chivas, something to do with the chupacabra (p.s. can we stop the sombrero chant?)

for st. louis, something to do with the 1985 world series, or one team in missouri (http://youtube.com/watch?v=TGC-znwmn9c) (after bannister's built, which i believe they're planning to do to the fire for illinois, since the stl stadium is gonna be in east boogie or wherever... and it'd actually be true for us and probably piss off all the st. louis mo-siders)

somebody resurrect some of those beckham/LA ones from that other thread.

Don't forget Seattle -- an anti-Starbucks chant for the time last month that every store closed down so that the baristas (and, I guess, baristos) had to learn how to ... make coffee.

Why? What's wrong with it. It's always a fun one, and it transcends just us doing it. It's an US chant done at Mexico games as well.

Screw the whole 85 series thing, it's over 20 years ago now. I do like the idea of the only Missouri team.

In all honesty, though, I'd rather work on PRO Wizards chants instead of anti-other team chants.

The latter are sooo much more fun ...

"We sing better than your wiiiiife
We sing better than your wife
We sing better
We sing better
We sing better than your wife!"

The sign at the game was funny, that chant is lame.

because it's racist.

and i don't care what the USMNT or their supporters do. aside from being irritated when it's racist. i've a mexican friend who came to a wizards-chivas usa match, and was ambivalent about who to support, despite my urging, but after she heard that, she cheered for chivas. so, you could very well be losing fans.

that's fine. but in the infinite majesty of the internet, there's room for another thread about something.

Never said there wasn't, I was just using the internet to state my opinion...

i've been against it for a while due to the same reason, my friend brought his now fiancee to a match and started routing for chivas due to that chant

After thinking about it more, while I enjoy the chant, I understand the racist remarks, but in the end, I think this is going be like organized cursing in the section. We can curb it, and try to stop it, but it's not going to stop 100%. The majority of the section is no longer BS posters, like it was when we were in 114, and if that majority still want to do that chant, their going to do it.

How is it racist? Me not being mexican am not privy as how it is offensive. Please do explain.

i'm going to try not to be passive aggressive about all this (and i've edited this post a few times with that goal in mind), but..

in a nutshell, it perpetuates stereotypes.

here are some examples of other things that piss people off:

you don't have to be mexican.

I have had similar comments to me made about that chant and I have refused to sing it for quite a while.

If the leaders of the section don't start it and others don't join in when it is sung it will go away.

Having an alternative chant to that one would make that process quicker.

Sorry, still having a bit of a hard time grasping why it is offensive. Is it the reference to sombreos or is it the bastardization of the tune. Is it offensive because it is sung during a chivasusa game would it be less offensive at a New England game, or a national game against Canada.

Ai-yi-yi-yi (syllabes sung in place of words, fa-la-la-la la la la la, in deck the halls)
Somebody stole my sombreo (I guess a sombreo somehow is an ethnic marker that is if you believe all mexicans where sombreos)
That dirty rat/twat(now if I was a rat/twat I would take offense to that, not all rats/twats are dirty)
has stolen my hat(not seeing any racist language here but it does imply that dirty rats/twats are theives)
and now I have nothing to wear-o (the nudists would be proud, the ultra conservative a little shocked to the reference of full on head nudity)

I don't really care for the song it has absolutely nothing to do with the Wizards/soccer/kansas city/cauldron. It is most definitely out of place at a soccer game. Though if somebody steals a sombreo and starts tossing it though out the crowd I could see how it would fit. I just don't see how it is racist. There is no reference to any color race creed religion. Just rats/twats and sombreos.

It plays on centuries of negative stereotypes. I agree it's not literally racist, as Mexicans aren't a race - but when the negative reaction is that prevalent outside of Sam's Army regulars, maybe it's past time to retire it.

you are right. I guess it isn't important if it is racist or not. It is the perception of it being racist that matters.

anyway, back to the topic at hand.

for chivas, we could do a version (with the help of you spanish speakers) of "la cucaracha" as "el chupacabra"

or there's this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=E_OqZyDppUE

or just something calling them impostors or second-rate in some way.

i don't really know anything about seattle except that it rains a lot and the space needle. maybe something like "i can't hear the puget sound"

For second rate, you mean like the "you're not the real Chivas" that we've done from time to time? Or is that one not good enough/played out?

As for Seattle, it's hard to even think about them or St. Louis since Seattle won't even be in the league this year, I mean I'm really indifferent to them either way right now.

yeah, that'll do.

How about throwing some D.C's way, considering we play them in 7 days and we're going to be about 10 feet from the entire defense and keeper for a good 45 minutes.

tune of yellow submarine:
You signed two brasilians, and you still aren't shit!
still aren't shit!
still aren't shit!
You won the supporters shield, but you still aren't shit!
still aren't shit!
still aren't shit!
You're in the superliga, and you still aren't shit!
still aren't shit!
still aren't shit!
You flew a thousand miles, and your team's still shit!(to the travelling supporters)
your teams still shit!
your teams still shit!
Five games on ESPN and you still aren't shit!
still aren't shit!
still aren't shit!

a suggestion...
I know everyone's trying to curb organized cursing...but i couldn't really think of a different expletive to put in it's place that wouldn't make it sound stupid. "crap" and "poop" just don't seem to have the power that "shit" does.
