I recently bought a 30GB iPod (for Windows) when on holidays in America... I returned home the other day, hooked it up, got everything connected and got all the songs on my CPU to my iPod (via FireWire)... no problems there.

Two of my friends, who were also on holidays with me, have not been so lucky... they both got 15GB iPods (for Windows) and when they tried to get the songs from my computer a few hours ago, they were made 'update' their iPods, only my PC wouldn't allow them to update for some unexplained reason. Will their iPods not work on my computer because mine is a 30GB, and theirs are only 15? Or is it because only one iPod works per PC? Or is it another reason? I'm very confused here

Now... here's the huge problem. When we went to the removable disk part of one of my iPods to see if anything would register there, we were told that we needed to format the disk, and that this would wipe out all information on said disk... we thought that this was the answer to our problems and thus formatted it. Now his iPod can't do ANYTHING. When you plug it into the PC you get the "do not disconnect" screen, and when you plug it out it completely LOCKS on the "it is now safe to disconnect" screen... it won't even turn off, it's like it's been given a labatomy. We tried to fix it by plugging it in and using the 'resore to factory settings' option, but that doesn't seem to be having any effect (it's been lying here for about 45 minutes without any signs of progressing). Does anybody, ANYBODY AT ALL have any information on what to do here?

Also, if worse comes to worst, does anybody know about how much it would cost to get a specialist to get his iPod back to normal? And if that isn't an option, does anybody know how to return an iPod to where-ever it is you return them to from Ireland (where we are)? PLEASE HELP US!

You know, you might have better luck at these sites:

http://ipodlounge.com/

Apple has wonderful customer support but I'm not sure how much help they would be if you are already abroad. If you were in the US, it would simply be a matter of getting your iPod exchanged. But good luck with that.

It's okay.. I just had to restart it (holding down menu & play for about 10 seconds)... complicated questions, simple answers, eh?

undefinedHello billyireland, had the same prob, resolved it by going onto one of the computers using just usb, (a bit slower) make sure that XP is in C DRIVE (for some reason, the updater file will only recognize that letter ) re-install everything, click on the updater file, and select to restore, after it restores, you should have no prob mounting it again, worked for me , hope this helps you

I just started using mine today and I have the same problem.. My dads works fine, but mine cant upload songs from the itunes.. I get teh same message (do not disconnect.)

It turns out, I have to upload from my own designatedcomputer in NYC and you cant just drop in to a friends and upload songs..

pretty dumb if you ask me. I am very tempted just to return my Ipod and get a regular less hassle MP3 player... These Ipods seem very overated

Turn off the Auto-Sync function, you should be able to download music from anyone's computer.

You can reset your ipod, did you read his post? Maybe look at the paper work that came with it. You may only need a reset to jump start it.

Fair enough, I admit I breezed through the manual... For me, that is part of the problem. I like, and am perhaps spoiled by the straightforwardness of the average mp3 player, and the ease of use.

Where is this function? on the ipod or in Itunes?

I resetted my Ipod, and It still wont download music. MY original problem was fixed (iI needed to purchase a high speed USB port, my original was too slow.) But now it still wont download. It simply gives me the big "charging battery" icon..

In iTunes. Right-click on "Bostonsoccermdl's iPod" (or whatever it's called on your computer), go to "settings" (might be "options"), and uncheck "Automatically synch iPod" or whatever it is. You'll know what I mean when you see it.

I've noticed that my computer won't recognize the iPod unless I have the computer on with iTunes started up, then plug in the iPod...have you tried that?

My Itunes wont even recognize my Ipod. I backtracked and realized, with my slower USB card (which Itunes wouldnt cooperate with) it recognized it, but wouldnt transfer music. I bought the high speed one, and after installing it multiple times and the drivers, It must be defective, because the computer and itunes isnt recognizing it at all... So I dont even get the messages or the options to click on the stuff you mentioned above. I am going to return the card and start again.....

I would just drop the whole thing and buy a regular mp3 player, but after borrowing my friends Ipod, it is pretty sweet, and I am stubborn as hell. I am obsesessed with getting this thing to work..

Do yourself a favor and don't reset the ipod ..update the ipod.

http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

Use the updater, and go from there. I think you may be having driver issues with all the loading and reloading you did added a 3rd party USB 2 card. I just reformatted a mac ipod that I gave to a pc user and had NO issues. I'm not saying it's you, but I think it may be user error.

Hope my link helps and if you want better help than you'll get here. Go here

If you have time in the morning, you can go to the Apple Store when it opens and have the guy at the Genius Bar look at it. You can also go to the Apple Store site and set an appointment for later today, though not unlike a dentist's office, things don't always go according to schedule.

But yeah, like Squash says, a firmware update might help.
