2-2 with Bielefeld, the Intertoto Cup and that's a "pleasing end to a bad season?"

Yeah. We were in 7th going into the day and now we've qualified for Europe. I didn't expect more going into today.

Sorry man. I don't see where that's "pleasing." But to each his own I guess. Sorry for the way I put it.

Well, it was a horrible season and I'm happy that it's over. I think I could live with a UI cup spot after a season like this if it wasn't for Wolfsburg getting into the UFEA Cup. Seriously, they have no business in the Bundesliga anyway, let alone Europe.

I just have to force myself not to think about our goalkeepers. We could have been playing for the Champions League if it wasn't for those stupid mistakes. So I rather think about some pretty girls...Schäfer...who's that?

If I was a Stuttgart fan I'd be content with a chance to play in Europe, given that it looked like you would miss out.

In light of your GK crisis; it may be a long shot but with your Mexican contingent a bid for Guillermo Ochoa wouldn't be completely unrealistic. Young and full of talent.

Alright, so here's my report:

Obviously was great to be back in the stadium, but when Bielefeld took an early lead, I knew we could be in trouble as we've always seemed bad at coming from behind this season. We had some chances in the first half, Gomez with two good ones, but on the whole we were playing very badly and weren't looking close to coming back.

When I saw the halftime scores, Hamburg was practically through at 3-0 up, Wolfsburg was looking good leading away to Dortmund, and Leverkusen was drawing. So the way it seemed was that we'd probably need to turn the match around completely to make Europe. I was by no means optmistic, and that perhaps explains why I was pleased simply to make Uefa Cup!

Anyway, second half came around, and we kept pressing, but at the same time weren't playing well, and time was slowly ticking away. Veh made some substitutions taking off Boka who was 'Gelb-Rot gefaehrdet', taking off a Hilbert who had played a very bad game, maybe he was just too dissappointed at that moment for not being nominated for the EM, and he took off an absolutely terrible Basturk for Manuel Fischer, what would turn out to be a brilliant move.

In the 75th minute the ball was booted into the penalty area, there would never have been any risk of scoring a goal but Fischer barged his way past a defender AND the goalkeeper just to get a touch to the ball first, push it away, and get fouled and win a penalty. It was an excellent move by him, and I can guarantee you that I don't see how we would've scored out of regular play, a penalty was all we could hope for. But we got it and Gomez booted it in. I

People went wild but I was still held back, not knowing whether it was enough. Then about 5 mintues later a guy with a radio told us all that Bremen had scored, and then I felt good! They showed it later on the bigscreen and clearly everyone celebrated, it seemed like a draw would be enough after all. Then in the 85th minute we got a penalty and MANUEL FISCHER SCORED HIS FIRST EVER PROFESSIONAL GOAL. We've all heard great things about him, and how we can come to expect a lot from him in the future, and today he booted in, at the age of 18, his first of what i'm sure will be many, many goals for VfB in the future. And nevermind the fact Bielefeld equalized a minute later, we got a draw and Leverkusen gave us the 6th place. Had we won, it wouldn't have changed anything as Wolfsburg won and HSv beat KSC 7-0 :D

EDIT: clicked send too early

So we've made UI Cup, which should in theory allow us to make it to Uefa, and since we should make Europe now it'll permit us to keep going after big name players who wouldn't be an option if we didn't qualify.

For sure it's been a season to forget, but at least we made Europe, which is pretty damn surprising considering we lost what, 14 games I think, not sure.

In terms of the players yesterday:
ulreich was solid, couldn't do anything about the goals really, Boka I think played well but had to be taken off due to being at risk of a sending off, Delpierre and Osorio were for the most part solid in central defense, Beck had some good moment and some bad ones. Magnin replaced Boka very well after coming in.

Khedira had a solid game but made two big mistakes on the 0-1 for Bielefeld, which were almost decisive. da Silva was probably our best starting midfielder, Hilbert had a very poor game, but not as poor as Basturk who did not have a single good action all day. Hitzlsperger was a definite improvement after coming in.

Cacau was slightly quiet, and Gomez was having quite a poor game I though, but just as I was thinking that, he popped up with a penalty and nearly assisted a goal to Hitzlsperger.

But man of the match was Manuel Fischer, came in and changed the game. We can look forward to this guy in the future.

And finally, the man of the day was:

After 8 years with VfB, Silvio Meissner ended his career yesterday and got a good send off! Wish you the best in the future, Silvio!

Here's who we could end up playing in the Intertoto Cup:

Either a team from Luxembourg, a team from Georgia or (most likely) FK Moscow from Russia. I don't think it'll be easy, I know the Russian league has improved in recent years, with CSKA winning Uefa recently and then this year Zenit doing the same, and destroying ScheissBayern along the way. So it may well not be easy, but we'll see, we've got 2 months to prepare :)

I don't think so. I guess the Intertoto Cup will be enough.

Yeah. That starts early enough for you guys, but you really only participate in the final two or three rounds, right???

That's the way it was last year, so I guess it'll be the same this summer.

The season is hardly over and the first transfer rumors appear. Apart from the widespread rumor about Lehmann (good but too old IMHO...I'd prefer Enke) a couple of others appeared:

1) Stéphane Dalmat
A 29 year old French offensive allrounder from FC Sochaux-Montbeliard. He had 8 assists and 3 goals last season. I don't know much about him other than that. I'm not sure if he's the guy we want though. He's moved from club to club every year for 10 years now.

2) Victor Anichebe
20 year old Nigerian striker from FC Everton. Not so sure about him either. He played 27 matches in the Premier League, scoring 1 goal (in the first match against Wigan). Most of the time, he came off the bench (17 times).

3) There are supposedly talks about Gentner returning one year in advance, although I don't give those rumors much credence. I would like it though.

Also, Schäfer is reported to have said that he wants to stay, even though he doesn't seem to have a future in Stuttgart. We'll see how that turns out.

Man, you can't get Enke if Hannover isn't selling. You get the best available. AVAILABLE being the key word.

Right now, that is Lehmann.

Simon Jentzsch would be available for a decent price, but last season, he was worse than Schaefer.

What about Jena's Belorussian keeper Khamutouski? That kid can play and already has CL experience!

I saw that he said he plans to be at the start of training camp, but did not read the story.

BTW, I think the foreign players you mentioned are both out of Stuttgart's price range.

I know nothing about the Gentner situation.

Very true, but Enke is reported to want to leave. So it's still possible. (I can dream, can't I?) ;)

Of course Lehmann would also be a good choice, but it would only be a short term solution

Heldt said that they're also thinking about Hildebrandt, but I guess he'd be too expensive.

What about Jena's Belorussian keeper Khamutouski? That kid can play and already has CL experience!

I actually have no idea what he's capable of doing. So I can't comment on him. But if he's good enough, then bring him on.

BTW, I think the foreign players you mentioned are both out of Stuttgart's price range.

Victor Anichebe is said to be around 2 million €, while Stéphane Dalmat is reported at 4 million €.

However, I have no idea if those numbers are even close to what they would cost in real life.

I know nothing about the Gentner situation.

There were articles on Sport1.de and in the Kicker magazine. Wolfsburg wanted to buy Gentner for 3 million and Heldt in a friendly manner told them to f*ck themselves.

It could be worse! A good (german)friend here in Houston is Kickers Offenbach fan since 25 years... Look at the tables, what happened to them this year.
And it happened before, that a Bundesliga champion, the next year went down to 2.BL.....

So, the way last season went, I'm ok with it, that we ended up in the UI Cup.
Just my 2 Cents..............

Dude, I never said it wasn't OK. I just can't see where it is "pleasing."

Dude, I'm a Dortmund fan and the UI Cup would be barely "pleasing" to me.

You guys were champs last season. How can barely making the UI Cup be "pleasing?"

That was my point.

I haven't heard anything concrete, but there are constant talks about da Silva leaving. Personally, I'd like him to stay, but it's true that he doesn't have that good a perspective, so I couldn't blame him. Schäfer is of course a candidate, but as I said, he seems to be determined to stay. Then there's Ljuboja coming back who certainly doesn't have a future in Stuttgart. And I'd guess that Farnerud doesn't have much of a future either.

And of course there are constant rumors regarding Gomez. There's nothing concrete, but with a player of his caliber you always get speculations. He has promised to stay at least another year, but if he does well at the EURO and gets an offer from a top club, I couldn't blame him for leaving. It would suck though.
