Anyone concerned that the recent tragedy in his personal life will negatively affect his performance for the club this year? It would seem like something that would be a big distraction for him, and understandably so.
Actually, I think it will calm him down.

VfB.de has announced Meira's transfer to Galatasaray.
Good luck for a sympatic player.
Apparently, the transfer fee is 5M. Exactly what VfB is reported to have paid Chelsea for Boulahrouz.

Wow, I have to say that I'm surprised. I would have thought that he'd go to a high profile European club.
And what makes you think Galatasaray isn't that? They won the UEFA Cup less than 10 years ago? The last time I checked, that's one more European trophy than you guys have.
And what makes you think any other "high profile European club" would want Meira?
He's a "pretty good" central defender. He's far from elite. And not only that, he's also prone to the "stupid moments" that people still criticize Boulahrouz for even more than Boulahrouz has been the past couple of seasons. Meira can also be a f#cking dirty bastard on the field when he wants to be.
I think the only reason Galastasaray went after Meira is because Michael Skibbe is coaching there now and Skibbe knows him from the BL.
I actually thought Meira would wind up back in Portugal because he's overrated his value. Nobody with a real chance to win the CL would want Meira.
Galatasaray will probably pay him quite a lot, but I'd suspect that he'll leave within a year. Turkish clubs have never been the most reliable when it comes to payments. Still, I hope it'll all work out fine for Fernando. He is a great guy after all.
That is some of the most ignorant shit I've read at BigSoccer in a long time. You're seriously grouping Galatasaray in with other Turkish clubs who might have had that problem in the past?
Some players have gone to Turkey and been all right with it.
That is really pretty freakin' ignorant of you to bring that shit up in this situation. Meira joined one of Turkish football's "big three", not some struggling club. Seeing that Galastasaray is ALWAYS in the CL or UEFA Cup, I don't think Meira is going to have to worry about getting paid on time.
I also think you seriously overrate Fernando Meira. This guy isn't nearly as revered by others as he is by you guys or as he is revered by himself.
Meira might be a "great guy" to you. However, to the rest of us, while he doesn't suck, he's also part of the reason people rip Portugal's defense.
The guy had one fantastic season that was pretty much a "dream season" for VfB as a whole and he some kind of star??
I don't get that. The guy is pretty good, but he's far from among the elite, even in the Bundesliga.

Im not surprised he is going to Galatasaray, but im guessing the reason benztown would have been expecting more was because Meira was, after all, linked with Juventus and Liverpool among others at some time in the last couple of years. Hell, last year he would have left to Juventus if Heldt hadnt stopped him.
Im guessing that is why benztown would have thought a more 'high profile European club' would want him.
Btw, im happy to see that Hitz is our new captain :)

Juventus were signing any internationals they could get their hands on at that time. If Meira was so coveted by them just last season and they thought he was still good enough, don't you think they would have topped a measly 5M??
Maybe that's what made "benztown" think what he did, but Meira was EXPOSED from the Cup Final against FCN, through last season and at the Euro tourney.
Maybe that's why Juventus didn't come back around? Maybe they know they would have made a grave mistake had they been successful in bidding for him this time??
I know we all like to think players at our clubs are better than they truly are, but to disrespect Galatasaray the way he did while pumping up Meira was just sickening in my opinion.
By the way, you brought up Liverpool's interest?
It's at another position, but they just signed sorry ass Philipp Degen. What does that tell you about their scouting people???
I think Meira will do great in the Turkish League, but be abused in the Champions' League.
But not many big clubs turn down a Portugese international for 5M and I don't blame Galatasaray for doing this. I think it will generally work out for both parties.
Btw, im happy to see that Hitz is our new captain :)
Great choice. Really a "no-brainer...."

Vfbstuttgartfan is right, Meira was linked to some top clubs...I'm not saying that it is a downgrade compared to Stuttgart, but I would have thought that he'd make a real upgrade.
As for the financial troubles in Turkey, that might be ignorant on my part, but you hear it quite often from players and coaches going to Turkey. I think the Turkish league has a lot of potential. Turkey is a big country and people there love their footy. But it seems as if bad organization and administrative problems keep the league from reaching its full potential.

He was linked to some top clubs LAST YEAR. He's been EXPOSED since then.

Really? From who going to Galatasaray, Beskitas or Fenerbahce recently?? Tell me?
Because if you don't know what you're talking about, you shouldn't make claims like that.
Nor should you bunch everyone into a general statement the the PREVIOUS PROBLEM was a few struggling clubs when the league itself was struggling.

Franck Ribéry for example...
Here's what Wikipedia has to say:
On April 25, 2007, an appeal by Galatasaray against Ribéry's move to Olympique de Marseille was dismissed by the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS), who ruled in a statement that Ribéry had terminated his contract with the Turkish club at the end of the 2004-05 season on just grounds, and that Galatasaray was therefore not entitled to any compensation. Ribéry had opted out of his deal in May 2005 in order to return to France after having gone over four months without wages. Galatasaray had sought €10 million in compensation from Marseille, and appealed to CAS after FIFA ruled in Ribéry's favor in July 2005.

What?
AFAIK, the only problem Ribery had at Galatasaray was being released at the end of his contract. He tried to move on a free and
Back then, Turkey was still trying not to play by UEFA rules and TURKISH RULES then said that even though a player was out of contract, that club still owned his playing license until they sold it to someone else.
UEFA would just look the other way most of the time back then and many players claimed other problems trying to get FIFA/UEFA to sanction their free transfers.
Make sure the story is a good one.

Here's another report confirming the Wikipedia entry:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=424939&&cc=5739
Ribéry signed a three and a half year contract with Galatasaray but left after six months because he didn't get paid. And apparently, several courts agreed.
Also, that's exactly the story I heard when he moved to Bayern.

It was actually a claim that they did not pay ALL of his wages if I remember properly.
My then colleague covered that story. And back then, quite a few players made that claim and had it upheld because UEFA was too chickenshit to hold the Turkish Federation to their standards.
It isn't like that anymore.

It isn't so long ago that you can dismiss it out of hand and go around calling people names because they speculated about the instability in the league and pay structures.

I can when it is a club like Galatasaray and the method used was one commonly used AT THAT TIME to get players out of "Turkish situations."

Hey, I think you've made your point and we all know how you feel about it. I'm not interested in hearing you bitch and moan any further. Take it someplace else or talk about something different. Get your penis out of the blender, you're making a disgusting mess of it all.

Bitch and moan?
We were having a discussion about Meira's new situation. You know, I didn't notice any rules here that says everyone has to like what you're discussing.
He made very good points and brought up a very good situation. I wanted him to see that you don't get the entire story through the press.
If you don't like it, simply f#cking skip it tough guy.

Nice counter-arguement, for somebody who obviously realizes that they've been called out for exactly what they were doing. You repeated yourself and your "points of discussion" (and I use the term loosely) in 7 different posts. How many times do you need to stand tall as the Defender of the Honorable Turkish Clubs and how many times do we need to see you write "EXPOSED" in all caps? You were hardly having a "discussion" by typical definitions.
