For all the problems we had last night with fitness and IMHO player selection there was one thing I really liked.

With Niell and Gallardo on the field we finally have a solid counter attack. Some of those through balls Gallardo sent were things of beauty and Niell's runs were dead on. That's something we just didn't see last year even when our faster forwards were on the field.

If those two get time together and Emilio shows up...we will have a deadly combination. And it will be more enjoyable to watch than the pass-around game we played last year.

Are you going to start a thread for every aspect of the game you liked or disliked? We have consolidated postgame threads for a reason you know.

I'm fine with moving the thread if some feel it belongs there.

well Neill made the runs but other than his touch on the goal sequence he didn't do anything with them.
Nice through balls by Gallardo though. Nice to see.
I don't think it's about whether we had this in our arsenal previously, partly it was a tactical choice.. we played direct like that on the road many times in the past couple of years. Partly also we just didn't have our shit together as far as stringing together passes in the attack. That wasn't good to see at all.

While I agree with your assessment, I think that given the condition of the field, the opponent, the number of new players and the fact that it was their first "official" match of the year, I decided not to get down about it. Give them 3-4 more weeks and you will notice a difference. Lets not PEAK this team too early, like we did in the last 2 years.

We didnt have speedy forwards for this type of play outside of the MLS, its obvious this isnt jaime anymore, hes more of the stay back and hold the ball type forward, or distribute the ball himself, same goes with emilio, he is a finisher a pure finisher(he doesnt have that burst of speed comparable to Niell). Its good to see niell has the legs to beat defenders just on his speed, this will work well i believe this season for us. Emilio needs to step it up too, cause if not it might be jaime and "el enano" up front starting.
