On the very sad assumption that we don't get a team
in the near future. What is our plan B?
Do we support another team (cough* redbull *cough)
What about supporting Brooklyn Knights full time?
Do we make noise to try to lure investors to get a USL1 team?
What do you guys think?

Red Bull Park Is Mad Nice. Im Getting Season Ticks Just Because The Stadium Is Nice 1, And 2 It Is Only Going To Be A 10-15 Ride On Path Train. But We Will Get R Team, And To B Honest. I Think There Will Be 20 Teams Not 18, Fifa Cant Make Leagues Do Anything, And If England Has 24 League Teams, I Doubt Fifa Will Press The Issue

if - and only if the MLS says - There is no Shot at NYC2 - then i would worry about that - until I hear those words - i will support NYC2 :)

I actually agree. I don't think we will have 24 teams, i can see a cap at 22.
But if we go beyond 18, we're def getting a team. There's no way MLS can pass up NYC2 if we're going to have a league of at least 22.
Just imagine when team 22 would come in.... 2020?

Plan A's Failure is not an option.
Word, and plan B is that we keep playing the lotto and when we win we buy the fcukin team ourselves.

we need to all sign a contract saying that if any of us win the lottery, we HAVE to buy a team and put it in NYC.:D

Haha def.Its like 30-40 million for the franchise fee then we would have find someone to finance the stadium and other things. Its NYC we should be able to find one rich person who likes soccer lol.

Maybe more, with every team being added to the league, they're upping the price. I think ChivasCarson and RSL paid $15 million. TFC paid more, as did SJ and Seattle.
And then the negotiating to find a suitable piece of property. Then comes the purchasing/leasing of the land, then the cost of construction of a stadium. Not easy/cheap in this part of the country.

i think it's great that they are upping the price of franchises.
It weeds out anyone not very serious about MLS.
You'll be left with owners who see such a great
opportunity in owning a club, they will shell out whatever
the league asks for to get one. Garber and the MLS are greating
a demand in the market by squeezing the supply.

someone made a great post saying they just cap at 18 just to get people to pay the prices - then they will say 19 or 20 etc - it might be true

I agree. They will see more dollars out there and make room for a few more teams. They would still be a long way away from the overexpansion of the NHL and NBA.

Yeah you could make an arguement about having that many teams because of how spread out and how many markets there are in America, but there is no way MLS should get anywhere near 30 teams.

At this point, that is very true. Anything more than 20 is stretching it, really.

Only if you take into account the salary cap, poor youth academys to promote talent and the weird rules that go along with them, then 20 teams seems like the limit. But increase the cap, force teams to have youth academys in place, deregulate the rules to promote from the academys and you have a much brighter picture. The raising of the amount of Senior Internationals to 7 is a step in the right direction. Also adding an extra DP per team would help immensely in terms of quality and depth.
Doing all those things would allow you to make it to 25-28 teams. Help you to foment regional rivalries and increase soccer all over the country.

I think 28 is alot for one single league.
I think that a long time from now, when soccer gets a bit
more established and bigger in the states, there will be
intrest to start a MLS 2 /or USL1 will become more respected.
With that we might have 2 seperate leagues, possibly after that is
established, a rel/pro system MIGHT be accepted, but this would be so many years down the line.

I think that with 28 teams you would have to split the league in two. Similar to baseball/football etc etc. I dont think that Pro/Rel would work here. The only way it would work is if you take the top teams in the USL along with the candidate cities for MLS that dont make it and create a true 2nd division.

Metroflip has a good point. The price keeps going up.
I think the league will soon see the price go up to 40,50, or 60 million. They will be greedy and expand to 30 teams. Its easy money. We will see Nowhere City vs East Nowhere City playing soon enough.
As a fan, I want to see 20 to 24 teams. I don't like watching irrelevant small market teams play.
