having a "money man" like Schnusi and a billionaire like Tönnies in charge have changed how things are done auf Schalke.
So if Tönnies & Schnusi are financially so potent, why were you so desperate to ask the Dortmund fan Gerhard Schröder (he contacted Putin & Gazprom) for help 2 years ago? But well, let's stop discussing this topic again...
Congrats on the important away win in Hamburg, Büskens & Mulder seem to be doing a good job.

When were they desparate for that deal? The biggest financial burden was lifted by the Veltins-Deal and increasing tv revenues. The Gazprom deal nets us approx. 12-20mios for nothing in return as their image won't be bettered an inch by the sponsorship. Gazproms image and their behaviour is much to negative.
Why should Schalke not accept the money? If not Schalke it would have been a different club, the holier than thou attitude is ridiculous. On top we are nowhere near Gazprom's biggest business partner neither in Germany nor Europe but everbody was acting as if the club had suddenly morphed into a KGB subsidiary with barely a hint of independence.
Of course the opposing fans will abuse this sponsorship but no one should act as if they or their club would have walked away from the money with the lone exception of St Pauli.

Well, maybe you have already forgotten the whole prehistory of this deal (I remember very well all those discussions about a threatening danger of insolvence at Schalke in the German media)...
But how mentioned above, this is "off topic" right now.

Yes, it´s funny how the German media have always been on about Schalke being insolvent while international financial magazines like FORBES lists us among the top ten most valuable clubs in the world...But then FORBES are just evaluating companies on a professional basis while German sports media have trouble adding 2 and 2 together...:D
And how is it possible that if we go back 3 years, to a time when Blöd was really on about it our credit ranking looked like this?
Bundesliga
1. München 1,86
2. Hannover 1,95
3. Leverkusen 2,08
4. Gladbach 2,08
5. Bremen 2,17
6. Schalke 2,32
7. Bochum 2,48
8. Freiburg 2,52
9. Wolfsburg 2,53
10. Bielefeld 2,61
18. Hertha 2.67
11. HSV 2,63
12. Stuttgart 2,83
13. K'lautern 2,90
14. Nürnberg 2,92
15. Mainz 2,94
16. Rostock 2,96
17. Dortmund 3,05

Schwalker, funny Mr Schnusi himself said Schalke was close to the edge (to me, the Schechter loan says enough really), that some steps were probably taken too quickly, and that if Schalke wouldn't make the CL once in two years they'd have to downsize the squad (welcome to the downward spiral...). That said, with this year's CL successes and probable re-qualification, you've probably made it.

Yes, I very well remember the discussion and I also remember very well that it was never as close as it was reported in the media at least no longer WHEN they reported this. The real problems were years before the Gazprom deal, after the Schechter loan the financial stability was secured. Now, one may like it or not, but it allowed Schalke to turn short term loans to long terms and gave them a cash reserve. After that there was never a serious cash problem, the large reported deficits were mostly due to depreciations not so much cash deficits.
Of course I would prefer if they never had spent as much money (for Sand, Mpenza, Poulsen, Rost etc), but the time for criticism was two or three years before everyone started talking about the financial situation. At that time the problems were already solved for the most part.
As of now the CL is mainly important to further strengthen the team not so much to sustain it, at least not from a financial standpoint. Of course one has to be cautious with such statements, but the financial burdens by the loan and the stadium are known and secured long term, a good chunk of the player's salaries are boni so the costs are to a degree tied to the sportive success. The problem for the BVB were that all loans were short term and they didn't have the money to pay them all off in the same short time span.

And a Champions league spot looks more likely than it ever has during the season we might add...
But apart from being able to add players a CL-spot is maybe even more important because it enables us to keep players.
It´s hardly a secret that Kuranyi have mentioned leaving Schalke unless we play in the CL on a regular basis and I bet there are others...and that is the real reason why our management is adamant that the league is all-important I bet.

Lol, Kuranyi tells everyone who wants (or doesn't want) to know he's available for 25m Euros "only", Jones talks about Manu, Milan, Barcelona or Madrid...what are those Rogon agents telling their players? These guys need to keep cool.
As for the previous discussion, wow, Schalke made quite a jump up in the most recent credit ranking (in Süddeutsche Zeitung), from rank 17 last year to rank 5 this year.

In my experience assets are hard to value, debts often cryptic and financial statements misleading....The onle thing to look for really are cash-flow projections.
And that´s because we as fans are fed obfuscated numbers.
I just had a quick look at Schalke and found that I could add another 60-70m Euros to our turnover while also adding more debts of course, so in general we can say that a club like BvB are almost debt free while simultaneously paying a 130m Euro debt.
Bayern are debt free while owning Allianz-Arena which carries a staggering 350m Euro mortgage which is more than half the total debts of the DFL "official" statements but somehow it never shows up.
Get me right, I understand that Wolfsburg can´t put their revenue at 74bn Euros just because they are owned by Volkswagen but is there a reason for not being able to add catering revenue at the stadium?
And funnily enough DFL just accepts financial commitments from banks when it comes to covering stuff, so if a guy like Bill Gates signed a contract to bankroll something at a club to the tune of 1bn Euro it would be considered a worthless slip of paper...officialy that is.

That is all...very true.
I fear it is...So look for the cashflow, it´s the only area where all different interests the clubs got come together, what happens to the cashflow later is mostly cosmetics, smoke barriers and all the kind of financial wizardry available to avoid taxes, reducing debts or financing new projects meaning that a laymen have almost no chance to really get a grip on the total situation at any organisation.

Schalke vs Bochum 3-0...How sweet :p
As always it was really a home game despite playing in Bochums stadium, as Bochum is a Schalke stronghold I might add.
Nice to lay the Hannover game behind us and add more pressure on Bremen and HSV..

I loved the commentary during this game..."The Bochum and Schalke faithful are singing abuse at each other...in a friendly way of course" :D

Well, there ain´t that much passion in a game like this, despite it being a game that divides families in Bochum.
As for Bochum fans singing, well...it`s simply not their thing :D

Nope...He have been plagued by injuries the last season and as his contract is up he´s free to sign for anyone.
There´s a rumour that Stuttgart are interested but I can imagine that Hertha and a number of other clubs are interested.
Popular player among the fans that always loves a fighter..;)

I just had a look at our finances for the calenderyear 2007...1/1-31/12 that is.
Turnover : €149.5m (118.8m - 2006)
Profit after financial posts €12.8m (3.4m - 2006)
In case you wonder about the not so spectacular increase in proofits I might add that our debts have been reduced by a special payment to the tune of €27.3m (CL-money) which we can add to the ordinary repayment of debts (€10.9m) which means that our total debts stand at €102.2 + €71m = €173.2m
We might also add that the accounts show that we had €21.7m in the bank at new years ewe.
I will refrain from mentioning assets as we hardly can sell the Arena and our squad of players..I hope http://www.soccer24-7.com/forum/images/smilies/bluerolleyes.gif
All in all a very positive year, in particular since parts of the CL-monies was earned 2008 and will turn upp in the next full-year report.
It also shows that we are reaching a point where we might spend much more on the transfer market sooner than anticipated thanks to non-budgeted incomes like CL-games.

You guys better make that extra income count though. In other words, pivotal transfers to the team's progression to narrow the gap in the league and play more consistently in Europe.
