First of all: I as a Twente fan am gutted that he's leaving, I really thought he would stay. He's our director of football and not just our coach, so it's completely back to the drawing board for Twente and we're all absolutely devastated about it.
To answer your question: I could produce a 100 links to Dutch media stories singing the praises of Fred Rutten. Twente over the past two years have not only produced results, but have also played some wonderful football. The quality of the positional play in an attacking system in particular has got the football media in the Netherlands raving about him. His main quality is that he improves players, he gets the best out of them and he has excellent man management skills. That's another reason why this is such a big loss for Twente. The players who've joined us recently came for him, not necessarily for the club.
I'm too depressed to wish him good luck at Schalke even.
So, what's his reason for leaving? Just the money?
Is it another case of the smaller club getting screwed?

Schalke is of course a much bigger club than Twente, that's how these things go but that doesn't ease the pain. I guess it's a convenient choice for Rutten as he doesn't have to move house, Gelsenkirchen is only an hour's drive from Enschede.
I've been a Twente fan for decades and this is how it always goes: as soon as your club threatens to become a genuinely top side, the big clubs come to bleed you dry and all of the good work goes to waste. This news is on the back of the news that our best player is joining Feyenoord as well. What makes it even worse is that Rutten is a local man. He played for us as a footballer for 15 years.

What has Rutten said to the club and the fans, if anything?

He hasn't said anything to us Twente fans yet. He just made his first appearance at a Schalke press conference though. Saying the usual crap.

Johan, you need to post that game clip where the Twente players make like 20 passes in a row. I forgot where you posted that. :o

I think it was in a Michael Bradley-Heerenveen thread on one of the US threads as that clip came from a Heerenveen v Twente game. I've no idea how to retrace it though!

That's the kind of football Twente got known for under Rutten's leadership.

As a Twente fan, I'm sad to see him go but you cant deny him the chance to move up the ladder.
Hope he does well. Be gentle for him.

Right!!!....Welcome "AufSchalke" Fred Rutten
As a club we hungers for sucess and tend to be less than gentle with our coaches, players and management.
But than fate have never been gentle with us Schalke-fans and if you make it at Schalke you will become so big that you´ll never need for anything.
Money, fame and as many teenage bimbos you can eat is what any coach "AufSchalke" gets, but give us a football team actually winning the title and we´ll give you something few ever gets at Schalke...Respect for what you have accomplished.

I do sympathize with you! ;)
It's a huge loss for Twente ... and to be honest, I'm not really sure whether he'll be coping with the unrealistic expectations at Schalke and the mentality there. But well, time will tell us.
Bonne nuit.

Sorry about the coach JN. People need to be more faithful to their teams. Nothing against Schalke, but Rutten maybe could have stayed with the club he helped bring up and taken them all the way. That was a really good clip btw. I'm hoping to tune into the CL semis and see that (yeah, right).

I hope you'll give him a bit of time. It took Rutten about four months into his first season to get Twente on track, but once they were off, they were well and truly great.

Well, what could it be...? ;)
I think you know very well that it won't be easy to win the BL title after Bayern's huge investment from last season (you had the huge opportunity last year, but missed it). It will be even tough to secure a CL spot in my eyes...
Fred Rutten will need patience & an untroubled environment, but I doubt he'll get that at Schalke. Maybe you'll prove me wrong, though...
I hope you'll give him a bit of time.
I doubt he'll get that. Schalke is damned to reach the CL every season ... so you can imagine the pressure he's facing, hence.
But well, he decided for this change and hopefully knew what he was doing. He'll be confronted with a totally different environment as it was the case in Enschede...

Hmm, we don´t "expect" to become champions all of a sudden, we do expect to see our spendings (2nd biggest in the league on wages..) reflected in the table though.
As for us being "damned" to reach the CL every year that´s not true for our financial health but necessary if we´d like to catch up on Bayern when it comes to transfers, wages etc etc.

He's a very levelheaded man though. It'll take a lot to wind him up. And he's got nothing to hide in his private life - he's a happily married man who likes gardening. Like I said earlier, Bild won't find anything on him. A lot will depend on the tactical discipline of the Schalke players I reckon. Rutten's style of play depends on it.
Rutten long was Hiddink's right hand man at PSV btw. He's quite used to CL pressures.

Well, I'm not so sure about this (despite the Gazprom deal)...

People have been praying for a financial collaps happening to us for more than ten years now, mostly because they fear what we might become.
But it´s rather seldom heard nowadays, having a "money man" like Schnusi and a billionaire like Tönnies in charge have changed how things are done auf Schalke.

Rutten knows exactly what he might find and expect at Schalke and thinks that he can improve things..That´s not a bad start!
