View Full Version : Who is the world's best defender?

There's threads on best goalkeeper, best striker, best defensive midfielder, and top 5 players, but none on defense (that I can find, forgive me if there's already one). That said, who are the games top defenders? It is my personal opinion that there is not one best defender, but rather a distinct top 5, it's hard to distinguish the actual best.
I'd say something to this sort, in no order...
1) Lahm
2) Ramos
3) Carragher
4) Carvahlo
5) Puyol

I would put Vidic in there of Manchester United, and also Terry. The results of the teams are effected when both are absent.

Alessandro Nesta.

Three posts and not a single mention of Rio Ferdinand? What a joke.

No, the joke was that 7 defenders were listed before I posted and Nesta had not been named. But don't worry Teso, I fixed it.:D

Alessandro Nesta.
Agreed. Since returning from his injury last season, he has been exceptional and held the Milan defence together.

Yes! Agreed! Nesta is #1 defender currently.

Aside from Carragher, the first list is good.
The only question is, "Where's Gooch?" ;)

I'm not even sure if I would include Carvalho in any list based on this season.

The fact that we've conceded only 17 goals this season, second only to your Man United, I think that at least one of our world class defenders deserves to be mentioned.

Four at least :D.
1. Alessandro Nesta (Italy)
2. John Terry (England)
3. Philipp Lahm (Germany)
4. Sergio Ramos (Spain)
5. Ricardo Carvalho (Portugal)

Lahm is somewhat overlooked in my opinion, great defender and he's capable of playing as a right back when needed or a left back. Bayern and Germany are lucky to have him.

Italy's best defender: NESTA
France's best defender: GALLAS
Portugal's best defender: CARVALHO
Spain's best defender: PUYOL
England's best defender: TERRY
These guys for my money, if i was entering a one game off, world cup/cl final.

P.S, LAHM & RAMOS if we're talkin wingbacks, lateralbacks, id replace Puyol or Gallas.

The best defender IMO is either Terry, Cannavaro or Ferdinand....depending on form...
But it might be better to make a best defence instead of chosing a top 5.
Mine would be:
Ramos-Terry-Ferdinand-Clichy
Backups:
Dani Alves-Gallas-Cannavaro-Lahm
